HELP: IOS 13 and the Files App using Powered USB Hubs for external device access?
I was excited to download IOS 13 and test it on my iPhone XS and iPad 2018 9.7" screen model.
The SD Card adapter is detected and displays all the files in the IOS Files App. I'm thinking I'll move all my AUM/AudioShare files to an SD card for backup and free up a 20+ GB's of space.
NOTE: iPhone 5S won't install IOS 13. Too bad I have a couple for sound modules. Time marches on.
We can now get 128GB Micro SD Cards for $22, 256GB for $44... up to a Terabyte for $750.
With these options I might look into video editing/recording and finally get Luma Fusion to be a well provisioned hack in multiple forms of media creative arts.
Then I tried connecting the camera kit adapter (with power port cabled) and 2 USB disks. That did not find and attached devices.
I have read that using a Powered USB Hub will cause these disk to be discovered. Is that true. I have purchased the cheapest powered USB Hub in the past and can't find the cheap power adapter. Clutter is NOT our friend but more of a symptom of a disorder.
Anyway... I'm seeking feed back on the Powered HUB and what I might expect and recommendations on a solid well made USB HUB with a good power cable (or well made adapter).
The cat's love to chew on the cheap ones so I want something well made.
Of course, all this leads to effective ways to back up apps and offload data since 128GB just isn't enough with some apps that can consume 20+ GB's (Colossus Piano with all the good ones, AUM with a lot of recordings).
Let us know what you have the works well and any clues about performance expectations.

I have 2 old 2.5” USB drives that are working with a powered USB hub.
But 4 of my old drives are not showing up in Files.
They may be busted. I have to try them on a Laptop later to see if they actually work or not.
But 2 drives worked good with the hub. Freed up about 15 GB already.
Depends on how they’re formatted. I saw FAT/FAT32 are not supported.
I think it’s NTFS that isn’t supported, not fat32. But yes, non supported file system is a good call.
I think you’re right. I watched a video review for a beta version where they mentioned FAT32 wasn’t supported.

So to use a flash drive, with lightning you need a powered hub correct? Or is there an adapter lighting to USB that works ?
Yes, the Apple CCK3 works with a power cable connected.
When I tried it without lightning cable it said ‘This accessory requires too much power’.
OK. It might be the file system formatting that's my issue. I'm also going to try this $26 powered USB Data hub:

Copying large amounts of Data to a Micro SD Card takes too long and the adapter block the iPad from access to a power source so you run the risk of the iPad halting during a large transfer. Not a great strategy for offloading or backing up the iPad data.
Yeah, I was talking about the CCK with the extra lightning port to keep a charge going.
Let us know how it goes with the hub. Jakob did a video on Twitter showing that working.
Yes. I want to find a way to make that work. My SD card adapter takes over the lightning port and the CCK converts to USB with a lightning port provided only for power.
The Hub will arrive in a couple days but I need to test some USB disks with a powered CCK too to see if one is recognized and test the performance. Having the SD adapter handy is still great however and it’s small and cheap way to move a lot of audio about with IOS 13.
I formatted the drive to exfat on the MAC instead of the PC and it's working. So there's the question of whether the PC formats exfat correctly. I was able to move the drive back and forth between the windows PC and the iPad with no problem.
Here's the final setup:
Seagate 5TB drive
formatted to exFat on the MAC
plugged to a powered USB hub
USB hub plugged into cck3
cck3 (with lightning power) plugged into iPad.
both reads and writes worked fine.
Are you finding it slow, at all?

SUCCESS: I found a Western Digital USB disk and formatted it with APFS (Apple File System) and it mounts using the CCK adapter with an external power source connected to the CCK Lightning Connector.
I formatted an SSD drive in a USB enclosure with APFS. It doesn't show when formatted with APFS or exFat. It looks like the SSD USB enclosure is USB 3.0. Does the CCK and iPad support USB 3.0. I'm not sure. Anyone have a clue?
UPDATE: The CCK supports converting USB 3.0 to Lightning. Not sure why the SSD disk doesn't mount. Maybe the Powered USB Hub will change something. I'll test that tomorrow.
I'm very glad to have the WD Disk and Micro SD cards working.
I tried an older Kingston 4GB DataTraveler USB stick with the regular (original non-powered) Apple USB -> Lightning (NOT CCK3) and it worked flawlessly.. obviously the Kingston is older and slower tech than newer drives BUT it worked.. SO.. YMMV.. depending on age? speed?.. ???

And yesterday's price on a SanDisk 128G SD card on Amazon was about $25. You can hardly beat that. AND it arrived in a DAY with Prime.
The Powered USB HUB (pictured above) arrived and I can connect all my USB disks and USB Audio Interface to the hub. I then cable the primary fixed USB cable from the HUB to the CCK adapter and all disks mount and the audio interface works.
I can also power the iPad using one of the HUB's USB Ports cable to the "power only" lightning port on the CCK which reduces the wall-wart power adapter connections. I essentially traded the HUB's power adapter for the previous iPad power adapter.
Yeh, even non SSD HD’s work on a good powered hub. Too bad mine with any content I care about are formatted NTFS.
I’m sure it will improve but right now it’s very clunky. AudioShare or Cubasis won’t let you import straight from a drive, and you can’t open in to either of those programs.
So I really don’t see the point.
Your better off just using Dropbox or box .
