Anybody with Behringer K2, how it is against iMS20 app ?

edited October 2019 in General App Discussion

Got some extra cash, and i'm right now at the edge, can't decide if i should buy K2 or BassStation 2.

BS2 sounds beautiful, it reminds me old Roland SH-5 by it's character of sound.. but K2 demos are nice too..

Maybe if somebody can compare same patches on iMS20 app and K2, that would be helpful :) If there is no signifficant difference in sound, BS2 will be winner :)

(note: i already have Neutron, Minibrute, Boutique SE-02, Microfreak and Volca B/K, so i'm preferably searching for something with different sound from rest of those - based on demos i heard looks like both those are matching this criteria but i'm opened for other suggestions in price range 360-380€)

  • @dendy: imo, if you are looking for something with a unique character: 0-Coast. IMO, no software synth captures its character which is pretty unique whereas the the iMS-20 does a nice job according to a few people that have owned an ms-20.

  • was thinking for a while about this one (i really like Ripplemaker which is going in same direction) but it is over my budget... in 600€ range i would probably go for DeepMind desktop :)

oh and wanted to add - also interesting DIY in that price range is option - i built two Ambikas and three Shrutis in past so soldering iron is my friend :)):

Another options in that price range i was considering are : SH-01a, JU-06a (but those both are not real analog synths but VA; they sound ice though), probably b-stock Moog Minitaur and Doepfer Dark Energy III, analogue solutions treadstone (both under 400€ b-stock at thoman.de) .. question if i'm missing something obvious in that range :)
Behringer Model D is out of game, i have it pretty much covered with Moog MD app ;)

  • Bass Station has nice full sized keys, if that matters to you. Keybed feels pretty nice.

I was just going to mention the excellent keybed @kinkujin

Has aftertouch and recent firmware update added microtuning and more good stuff. The large filter frequency dial with double midi cc for higher resolution is great for finding the sweet spot!

Everything sends cc data so it’s an excellent midi controller for your iOS synth collection too.

  • @dendy Since you've got DIY experience, I'd go modular. You've already got quite a collection of budget boxes. For 400 euros you could get a rack, power supply and a super, super quality dual filter,or a quality single filter and oscillator, and integrate it with your Neutron. When you get some more cash, instead of another budget machine, you can expand. The Bass Station 2 is very good for the price - I have one - the filter is very good, but to be honest, its oscillators and envs don't hold a candle to quality eurorack. And since you've already got three monos, a BS will only really give you a different flavour of filter and oscillator. Running any of your machines through a quality filter controlled from the Neutron / adding an oscillator to the Neutron, would provide you with loads of new sonic possibilities.

  • If I was the OP I would be looking for something with a quality keybed to enhance that setup.

Used Blofeld keys or DX7 might be worth seeking out. Bargain hunting takes a while but can find some crazy prices depending on location.

  • Another vote for the blofeld.
The more synths you have, the less time you'll spend with serious sound design while that will really pay off in the end.
The blofeld is such an insanely deep and flexible synth that I'd claim you can get all of these different synth sounds out of it if you take the time. There's more to it than just the wavetable oscillators, filter models and mod matrix...
What helps a lot is a good synth editor on the iPad, e.g. Lemur with the latest blofeld template (and the old PatchMorpher if you still have an old iPad running iOS <=9.3.5).

  • Patch Base also supports Blofeld.

@ElectroHead modular is dangerous, that's blackhole for money, i have few friends with modulars and it's addiction worse than hard drugs :-))) Based on my addiction with miRack, i'm now pretty sure i don't want to start with HW modular, otherwise it will end with divorcing

@rs2000 uhm. Now you added pretty deep dilemma to my head :)) I actually had Blof few years ago and it is amazing synth indeed.

One of my criteria is - if i purchase something, in needs to be something what isn't even remotely covered by iOS apps.. i think Blof fulfils this criteria perfectly....

Damn, this thread was supposed to solve my BS2 vs. K2 dilemma, not to add more variables to equation !!!!

  • I have a Mono Station and just got the K2.
The Mono Station is pretty much the same synth in a different form to the Bass Station. It's wicked fun and sounds beefy. (no bass drop off at high resonance) Has presets and automation from all movements can be recorded to the sequencer.

The K2 has 2 resonant filters... Its sounds ridiculously fat and aggressive. It has an instantly recognizable tone and you can see why it's been used on so many records. I'm hoping it will be a good tool to expand my fairly basic synthesis knowledge. There are so many good video tutorials online, especially the Marc Doty ones.

Compared to the IOS app... I was a big fan of iMS20 and it's great that its in Gadget. I think its sounds pretty legit.
In comparison (I have not done an A B stlye test of each oscillator) the top end of iMS20 sounds a little artificially metalic (like it came out of an IPAD supprisingly).

The K2 sounds amazing and is fun to program. Has no presets, basic midi etc

Swings and roundabouts really... different but both have their uses.

The K2 has made me want to buy the Behringer Model D...

  • The iMS20 won’t catch fire

  • I've got an original MS20 here, and have always been impressed with the iMS20 version - it sounds very close.

I've nver used a K2, but it also sounds pretty close to the MS20 in the vids I've watched. It sounds a bit 'fatter' than the Korg, though that could be down to the way the video was recorded. Certainly looks the part anyway.

  • I’ve got an ms-20m (desktop remake) and love it to the bits.
I agree that the ims-20 sounds pretty convincing.
The gain staging is different, so needs a fair amount of fiddling to match the sound, but it can get pretty close.
I would definitely go with k2, but I’m a sucker for that filter sound.
+1 for 0-coast, that should broaden your sound pallet.

  • I'd pick an additional hardware analog filter only if the ouput track will be more or less raw (just dynamics and eq applied).
As soon as reverb, delay, phase, etc fx are applied it will be hard to recognize a particular character.

  • @dendy

I think you may have answered your own question :-)

problem is that this can be applied not just to BS2 but also to Blofeld.

So now i have new dillema - BS2 vs. Blofeld
I hate having spare money for toys, no money no problem ...

  • Dendy what do you plan on doing with this other synth that you can't do with what you have?

I agree modular is a $ pit. I went really heavy into it for awhile then traded half of it for some vintage gear. I get the same joy using iPad most of the time, patching stuff together in AUM.

I agree iMS20 is close to the real deal.

I would say you have the monosynth use covered based on your gear. Lots of overlap.

Blofeld is fast and sounds good, although the FX are bizarre. Be sure to get one with encoders that don't skip, although replacing the encoders isn't too hard. I have the bourns part numbers as I did this once before.

my favourite monosynth is the SH-101 so I would suggest looking at the sh01a or behringer MS-1.

There's still some cheap vintage polys to be had as well, like the jx3p and ESQ1. Microkorg has a lot of great sounds in it once you delete the bad presets, MS2000. I had a minilogue but preferred the microkorg sound despite the mini being analog. I'm probably not helping am I :)

Here’s yet another option to look at....

Just to muddy the waters and with respect to others opinions.....

I find it interesting that iMS-20 is often considered to be close in sound to a real MS-20.
While it’s functionally very similar, personally I don’t find the sound to have much of the ahem “character” that the hardware is famous for.
Maybe it’s close with some basic synth tones but for the signature MS-20 resonant filter stuff it sounds very different to me.

(Comparing MS-20m to iMS-20, not sure where the Behringer clone fits into this equation!)

    IMO YMMV etc :)

  • I've been eyeing the K2 since I love by Behringer Model D so much. Would love to wire those two together and make a monster synth....

  • edited October 2019

Thanks for all opinions ! Special thanks to @rs2000 and @BlueGreenSpiral for reminding me Blofeld (i had one 10 years ago, i wasn't just so good in sound design back then so i didn't discovered what gem it is - i'm pretty sure this time it will be different :)

After listening this demo, decision was made :-)

I’ve had a 1970’s MS20 for nearly 40 years - sounds almost identical to the one I have. Which model do you have?

    Sounds great👍

  • Good choice @dendy . They do sound nice and it will really broaden your sound palette.

  • Now, i just need to buy somewhere talent of that guy who made this epic demo

  • Have you seen this one yet? @dendy

Keep in mind that Behringer kept the Korg's original controlled voltage scheme of Hz/V rather than using the more standard 1V/oct, so this doesn't play well with other eurorack equipment unless you buy converters. Would have been an insta-buy for me if this was not the case...

The purchase is a ways off, so there's time to see if someone else blows up their systems before I do... ;)
