Know of any envelope shaping apps?

Hi all,
Does anyone know of an effect app that can continuously impose an adjustable ADSR envelope to an incoming audio signal? Sort of like a real-time version of the way Cubasis lets you adjust the attack, sustain and release of waveforms by grabbing the beginning end and middle blocks. Ideally, in AUM I would be able to place a source like an AUM File Player loop in the instrument slot, then feed it through what I guess would be a kind of tweakable but fixed multistage filter? I have a couple of straight filter apps, and I have the wavefolding Shaper app, but I am thinking of something that would let me roll the front edge off an incoming harsh transient, or tweak it’s decay - I guess this would require both filtering and a kind of continuously sampling looper of some kind, with pass through, combined in a single app.

That's more or less what FAC Transient does.
AudioDamage Filterstation is another option, it also has an envelope detector and it can additionally do some filtering based of the detected envelope shape.

  • @rs2000 : Ha! Thanks. I didn’t know about the Audio Damage app, I’ll check it out. :)

    You're welcome!
Make sure you set the input level correctly (e.g. using AUM's GAIN knob), otherwise the envelope follower may not work as expected.

  • iVCS3, the famous yet complex synth, uses an envelope shaper as one of the modules. It also supplies an envelope follower (a different thing) if that helps.

  • @u0421793, @ryanp47, @rs2000, thanks all for the suggestions. I do actually have iVCS3 but the fact I didn’t realise it did envelope shaping that way tells you all you need to know about how far beyond the presets I’ve got with it so far, lovely though it is. Still, I’ll fire it up and see where I get with it. I also checked out the Audio Damage manual though - yup, the envelope follower function described in there sounds pretty much exactly what I was after. Good steer, peeps. :)

You know, I’ve had Filterstation for god knows how long and didn’t know it did this. My bad! Will have a mess later on.

  • @Svetlovska this might Not be what your after but if literally drawing volume / filter curves over (up to) 2 bars of incoming / looping audio sounds good check Klevgrand’s ‘Kuvert’

  • If you just need to have those handles like in Cubasis, Multi Track Recorder has those handles on clips, too.

  • @Proppa : hmmm Kuvert sounds interesting too, dammit! This is going to get pricey! :). @CracklePot - yup, Multi Track Recorder is already firmly on my to-buy list, principally because it looks like it can save me the extra step of exiting AUM just to capture the mix, which is what I currently use Cubasis for. Workflow, and all that... I do use the handle drag thing a lot in Cubasis at mixdown, so it is good to know MTR has it too.

Do you know you can simply record the mix output and/or each track using AUM’s recording capability? I’m not sure you need MTR for this.

@wim: yes, I did know that :), I use the facility to record loops in AUM file player all the time, and I know I could use sends on each channel to do a master mix inside AUM if I wanted to. My current workflow though is to set up a mix in AUM of up to 8 channels of source apps, File Player loops and FX ( the max that can export at a time to Cubasis on my IPad) then set up IAA on all the outputs, run the mix unmixed as audio to 8 channels in Cubasis, and then screw around with the audio stems positions and audio balance, fades etc on the Cubasis time line before using it for final mixdown. I do a lot of audio clip tweaking at this stage, and I’m sort of hoping that MTR will let me do that tweaking inside AUM, as it is quite weary and disruptive to have to bop back and forth between AUM and Cubasis setting everything up for the export as a separate process, as my stuff tends to evolve organically from tweaks and mucking around as I go. As my channel and mix set ups change every time, creating templates is more trouble than it’s worth, and my hope is that MTR functions as a kind of ‘AUM File Player Plus’ adding some granularity to the editing process without having to leave AUM.

Yep, MTR sounds like it’s suited well for that. That’s a great workflow. B)
