Egoist ... calling occupants
Hi Egoist lovers/users. Finally taking the time to r-e-a-l-l-y dig in and learn this thing. I'm having so much fun and have spent enough time to learn all that I don't know.
First off, are you all creating your own loops or importing others or using the included? If creating your own, I'd love to hear how you are doing it. The process. Do you just rip a section of a tune of yours or do you build them up (like I saw @AudioGus do in a vid)?
Next, how do you manage your sample library? Does the tune you're working on store the sample within the app or are you calling it up each time? I guess I'm wondering how to keep stuff organized so as not to duplicate unnecessarily.
Oh and what's this bit about Abu Dhabi?
Thanks for any discussion. All pretty new to me.

Hey bro!
I mostly like to throw samples that I recorded. Nature sounds, wind chimes, factory noises and urban sounds.
Sometimes I like to record some lines in a specific chord using traditional instruments. Last, but not least, I create loops using other apps like Figure, Yellofier, iMaschine,TriqTraq, Skram, Forever Beats, Oscilab.
Generally I just keep these in Audioshare. Gotta admit I gotta cleanup what I import into Egoist
In fact, my whole device is in need of some cleaning
@kinkujin This is my desert island app. I particularly like taking a drumbeat made elsewhere which is decent but a bit vanilla and then 'reinterpreting' it somewhat with Egoist and then combining it back with the original. Also really appreciate the excellent pattern/song mode, which encourages me to keep developing/experimenting.....
I'm grabbing whatever I find inspiring. Still got quite a library of REX files that I've collected over the years so you can imagine that I was super-excited when KORG released Stockholm in collaboration with Propellerheads. Other than that, I'm also using ReCycle to build my own loops or drum/percussion sets.
That's not to say I wouldn't use the factory loops, there's so much you can already do with these!
Egoist, ReSlice and Groove Rider are probably the best alternatives if you want to slice and mangle common audio file formats.
In order to avoid huge lists of files (many apps still don't have folder support), from time to time I'll back up all app data (an iTunes backup is the safest and the only way to make sure all your own data is backed up) and start adding new samples from scratch. That also helps letting go your own old repeated patterns.
As for loop duplication, I do prefer it when the app stores loops with the project to keep it consistent rather than referencing a loop you might not have available anymore when you want to load the project again some day.
There are many uses, however I tend use loops and samples from AudioShare that I think have potential but are lacking something. I like throwing those things into Egoist to see what comes out. I find its limitations force me to be more inventive and open-minded, but it’s actually more versatile than most people realise.
I’m not sure what you mean when you ask if the tune you're working on stores the sample within the app or if you’re calling it up each time. The sample is automatically stored by Egoist. I keep it in there until I no longer need it; either because I’ve moved the project to Cubasis or I’ve scrapped it.
Great ideas and info @senhorlampada @JohnnyGoodyear @rs2000 . Much appreciated.
You guys ever buy samples? If so, from where?
This app makes me wish I had one of those turntables with the usb cable! Thanks and keep it coming.
I was wondering if the samples used for a particular tune were/are duplicated?
I've been wondering about this app for ages. As soon as I get paid, I think I'll jump on it. I just didn't like Thesys - very ugly app and difficult to use, I found.
Well, honestly, it's already paid for itself in the fun I've had just over the past few days with it. Seriously.
Sounds good
I've watched some videos and it does look like a fun app. Glad to hear it first hand.
Ah, yes. I keep a copy of the sample in AS and Egoist.
The challenge for me will be figuring out how to integrate it with other apps - when I'm not going to use it standalone.
And to get the loops/samples I need. New workflow for me.
Gotcha. Thanks!
This looks interesting ...

I’d like to give Egoist more of a deep dive; most definitely using my own samples. (probably using the new Auditor app, along with audio share, to compile the slices)
Here’s the one and only attempt at a progression I’ve made with it — just used a couple one-shot pad samples that I tuned the melody sequence with, using egoist’s cool effects system to add some flourishes here and there. The bass part definitely needs some work — I’m used to playing out patterns via keyboard , so I’m not that great at programming each step by hand yet.

I found this v1.5 update walkthrough by Tom Cosm useful.
That is cool and a great start to something.
I'll be interested to hear how you go with sample > Audiotor > Audioshare.
Thanks for the link @Beathoven .
That’s where I’ve been getting a lot of my samples lately. They’re pretty quality and a ton of variety
Thanks! ..
Auditor supports multiple layers, so you can import any number of separate one-shots or loop samples into your project, arrange them out on the timeline to correspond with the number of slices you want to trigger in Egoist — bounce down and save.
Twisted Wave is another great audio editor that can come in handy if you want to apply effects to your individual samples or selected sections of your samples. It has great built in effects + Built in hosting access to all of your AU fx collection.
Audioshare is just a great all-purpose audio file manager + toolset, includes very basic audio editing functions (trim, fades, etc) and also has built in recorder w/ AU effect hosting, that you can swap out mic input for file player input, using it to add effects to your samples. Most would consider it a must-have utility for iOS musicians, especially since so many apps can import and export directly to/from audioshare. It’s where I keep my entire sample collection and also a backup .wav mixdown of all my projects organized.
Today I'm mainly creating my own loops but the last really good pack I've bought was the complete former 9V Audio bundle. Quality stuff and more than enough to keep you and your children busy

I also like loading Streemur in AudioShare and record from arbitrary worldwide radio stations. In that case I usually import and slice them in Groove Rider.
Oh yes, good point, I'm also a passionate collector of vinyl audio snippets
It's great, and you can create whole songs from it, though I find that I need to record loops from it and then paste the sections together in an audio editor. In standalone you can bounce to Audioshare, but not individual stems of the Slicer/Bass/Drum (at least, I don't see it).
The “load” function doesn’t seem to work...All samples are greyed and I cannot select them. How do you import your samples?
Such a great thread, full of inspiration!
And am I right in thinking the title is a deep-cut Carpenters reference??
I have found it's still the best MPC style slicer for me simply because of its workflow. I use the MIDI input mode instead of the sequencer. I love that I can dump in a sample from vinyl, and very quickly find new slices because you can scrub the slice points and trigger samples at the same time. If I ever needed to, I suppose I could prepare a sample file made from previous slices and I'd have even more control.
@kinkujin do you not have an audio interface to sample vinyl from? I use the roland go mixer pro and it's worked fine.
Yes, you caught it. Great tune!
This thread has exceeded my hopes. Thanks you all. So much to try out and explore. Love this forum.
