Best app for fiddling with 100 or so random samples?

I'd love to chop, slice, overlap, create beats / etc... by combining all sorts of random samples, experimenting, maybe random generation, or triggered via midi signals from Autonomy or similar. Are there any apps that make it really easy to leverage imported audio file samples from Files or via AudioShare, and a workable flow for mangling many samples, instead of just one longer one?

Maybe not the answer you're looking for but for mangling, random triggering and experimentation I regularly do the following:

    • Append all (up to 92 per destination REX/RX2 loop) files into one (a simple sox script)
    • Load the file in ReCycle
    • Slice and save it
    • Load the RX2 file in Stockholm (Gadget)
    • Voilá, play each slice, filter, re-pitch, pan, reverse etc. to your liking. Be a piano roll pixel artist for a moment if you like surprises.

I love Egoist in Beatmaker 3, but even Beatmaker 3 on it’s own.

  • Maybe iDensity?

  • Beatmaker 3 would be your best bet. It does tend to crash from time to time, but you can't find a better set of tools with which to work with your samples.

@AudioGus I seriously gotta stop putting off getting Egoist, lol.

Oh shit, why haven’t I thought of this

Are you finding the new BM3 release crash prone?

Actually, I haven't played with it in a while. Is it still crash prone, or is it a bit more solid these days? If the latter, I'll have to give it a shot.

Most of the reports have indicated major improvements in stability and it sounds like the dev and beta want to know about any remaining issues.

I am finding BM3 to be extremely stable. I don’t recall the last time I crashed. I don’t think I crashed since the last update actually. Maybe once out of dozens of hours.

As for Egoist and Bm3, it is a match made in heaven for me. I love sketching in Egoist and then recording it in BM3 for further chopping. Effectrix as AU now? Pretty cozy now.

  • Yes, BM3 is still #1 option for slicing, chopping and triggering samples.

  • Also BM2 should be not forgotten ! In terms of slicing, chopping and triggering samples it doesn't missing anything important, and it's hell rock solid stable ! Yes, obviously it is not updated anymore - but what is there, just works (and it works also on iPhone ;)

  • Koala Sampler could be good for this too.

I was thinking about this, too. Any thoughts on how you'd get a bunch of samples into it quickly, though? I know you can export Ableton projects. I wonder if you can import them the same way?

You can drag n drop from Files in side panel mode directly onto pads.
Not as fast as a batch load, but still pretty fast and easy.

  • Finding the new release stable
    But he'll yeah
Still pressing the save button every minute or so
