[SOLVED!] Challenge: Win a free copy of Xequence 2, worth $19.99!
As most of you know, in iOS 13 Apple broke lots of things that have to do with file management.
One of the things that does seem impossible now with stock apps is to share a Korg Gadget project via a download link on a website (it already was comically complicated in iOS 12).
Here's the challenge: Find a way to package one of your Korg Gadget projects, upload it as some kind of file to a web server (NOT a file sharing service!) so it can be downloaded by others WITH A REGULAR DOWNLOAD LINK, and then "installed" into their Korg Gadget installation and opened there normally, and win a promo code for Xequence 2!
You will have to do this:
- without any third-party apps or services like DropBox, Google Drive, etc.
- without using a computer
- the two devices may not be on the same iCloud account
Please provide a full list of actions (taps, swipes, etc.) that have to be done.
Let the battle begin!

Question: Is the usage of cloud-storage like google drive allowed using their web pages for uploading and public sharing of files (so the uploader doesn’t need to have the app installed) - or do the participants have to sidestep to we-transfer or services that work without login ?
Just to clarify that usage of the Dropbox or GoogleDrive apps is not allowed?
(But it's ok to upload to 'web services' using Safari etc?).
1) First step is definitely to 'compress' the GadgetProject using Files.app (long-tap -> compress).
2) Use safari to upload the file to a supported service like DropBox or GoogleDrive.
3) Using the selected 'service' create a download link for the file.
4) Download the linked file using Safari and pick Gadget folder as the destination.
5) And last step is tp tap on the zip file while it's in the Gadget folder to expand it
6) Launch Gadget and open the project...(or tap on the project to open it in Gadget).
if usage of DropBox is allowed it's easy to share it to DropBox app, put it in a public folder, copy the link and paste it here...
(That can be done using the 'web interface' in Safari as well).
That works for me, but I'll let some others find out if there's an even faster way to do it
(Argh, don't like the auto-formatting where a hast-tag blows up the text like #WTF).
@Samu @_ki sorry, forgot to mention: The use of any third-party services requiring registration is not allowed, either
iCloud has a 'sharing' feature and as far as I know everyone who already has an iDevice has an iCloud account wether they use it or not
@yug: nice try!
but the use of third-party sharing services is not allowed, forgot to mention that.
Damn, too late. Shouldn't have bothered with formatting the text
Ah, ok. I'll try to find another solution
Btw. you don't need a OneDrive account to download a file shared with you using a link
(for an explanation: the goal is to be able to offer a Korg Gadget project on a website for others to download to their devices.) So I'm not just creating a problem to solve for the heck of it, but it is an actual problem that I'm trying to solve to be able to continue to offer my users the Gadget projects that accompany the demo songs for Xequence. (it has been impossible to do so since iOS 13).
There are tons of services without registration - i don‘t understand where the problem is with @Samu ’s answer, he basically already has not limited his reply to any specific cloud storage.
And i don‘t understand why the OP sees a problem at all with ‚how to transfer files between devices via cloud storage‘ . Is one of the Samu‘s steps is working as expected ?
Let me check!
Sorry, just updated my link to give better results
AND THE WINNER IS:
Samu
(check your PM!)
That was quick! I guess the missing link (literally) for me was the fact that it is possible to use a third-party file sharing service for creating a PUBLIC link that can then be used by others that are NOT registered for that service. Great idea!
Congrats, Samu!
Btw. you can use iCloud Drive. Copy the file to iCloud Drive, long-tap and then Share -> 'Add people'. In Share Options, select 'Anyone with the link' and 'View only', and then select how you want to share and/or copy the link.
Just be aware that when opening that link they will be able to see your Apple ID full name
@yug thanks to you too, you were close
Actually, it might even be possible without a sharing service at all, by just using a web server link and then having the user navigate to the "Downloads" folder in the Files app... will try that.
And some of you might find this thread ridiculous or somehow think that I'm stupid -- but to be honest, it's not really always easy or intuitive to do the most mundane tasks. There's now "in theory" a million features and possibilities for using files in iOS, but there's often at least 20 ways to do something, and exactly 7 of them work, and 13 others end up in some kind of cul-de-sac.
In Samu's step 4), "pick Gadget folder as the destination" will not work if the corresponding app is not installed. Safari will only ask to "Download" it, and the user then has to manually navigate to the "Downloads" folder and then has to move the file to Gadget from there.
Confirmed, it's possible entirely without a filesharing service.
Here's the updated instructions. Thanks again everyone

👍🏻 Nice - i just succesfully downloaded and installed both project.
I would recommend to modify the second last step:
.
Gadget sorts its projects by modification time. Since i have many changed projects, i have to scroll quite a bit to locate your demo projects on 30.06.2019. Using search just moves them to the top and they are much easier to locate.
At least on iOS/iPadOS13 it's possible to just tap on the Gadget project file in Files.app to launch it in Gadget.
Saves a few steps having to scroll a long list in Gadgets 'Open' menu
Files.app on iOS/iPadOS auto-extracts *.zip files when tapped so the process is quite smooth.
I still suggest download the *.zip file and choosing the Gadget folder as destination as it saves the hassle of having to move the files. After extraction it's safe to delete the *.zip file.
@Samu good suggestion on just double - tapping the project in Files, will change that.
However, I do not understand the "Choose Gadget as destination when downloading" bit. On my devices, all I can do is "Download", there are no other options.
When you download files you can select the destination folder when you select 'Files'. Default is 'Downloads' but that can be changed on per file basis if needed.
(Need to use the 'share' option when long-tap on a link to download, and that doesn't seem to work in iPadOS13.2.3 anymore, so 'Downloads' it is).
Yes, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to select the destination folder for a download!
Made an oopsie there. It used to work like that with 'Files' as an option.
So 'Downloads' it is for now...
(I'll check if there are some hidden Safari settings to re-enable it).
Oh, does the video even play for you? It sure doesn't for me
Does ANYTHING software-related still work without loads of issues in 2019?
I miss this:
Even better is to actually just tap the .gdproj2 file immediately after extracting it, that will open Gadget as well. Thanks @Samu
