MiRack or Moog Model 15?
Please help me decide. Model15 is renowned for making a lot of famous sounds but MiRack is super flexible with its application. I want to learn about Modular Synthesis, so whichever option I pick will be used for a looooong while.
Comments
Mirack hands down, it will be a steeper learning curve but the possibilities are endless. Also youtube is your friend and teacher 👍
And you can check on some vcv rack and hardware modular videos for more inspiration
If you’re in it for the long haul, Definitely MiRack, IMO. There are hundreds of modules in it (vs Model 15, which is just limited to 19 or 20 that aren’t swappable.) Youtube has a goldmine of beginner/intermediate and advanced tutorials for specific VCV Rack modules that are in Mirack.
If you love the Moog sound, nothing on iOS comes close to the fat sound you can coax out of model 15 — there’s a larger library of factory presets for it, making it more immediately usable for music production.
If you fall in love with modular and want to dive even deeper, you might want to check out Audulus 3 later on, which is more of a low level modular construction kit, somewhat like Reactor. (Audulus 4 should be coming soon as well, adding sampling and much more)
Both, but yeah miRack if you're more commited to modular exploration.
Both is your default answer 😂 good point though.
I love Model 15, it’s a classic but it’s a single modular synth system with no ability to add new modules. It’s great that it’s AU plug-in compatible but you can only run a couple of instances before your iPad starts to choke. miRack is amazing with current Eurorack modules being added frequently. miRack is so much more open ended and deep and it’s fairly frugal on resources depending on which modules you have loaded in your current document.
If MPE support (Moog-style) is important to you, Model 15 does that. But if the goal is to explore modular synthesis I’d recommend miRack. Both have their place, IMO.
The answer is "it depends". miRack is great and has tons of modules that have more functionality than the Moog
BUT and this is a huge but
IMO, the sound quality/character of the Moog is extraordinary, and while I love exploring in miRack, I don't think that the modules (or the vcv rack modules on desktop) are up to the same level. Don't get me wrong, they are very good, but if I am going for sounds in the Modrl 15 wheelhouse, I will use it over anything else.
Also, if you are new to modular, more modules is not necessarily better. It is easy to get distracted by breadth be gore getting the basics together.
@Eschatone : I don't believe that Audulus 4 is coming soon. My understanding is that it is still a way off and Taylor hasn't given an indication that it is near completion.
Is it worth checking out Ripplemaker too (especially seeing as it is currently only £3.99)?
Btw, Zmors Modular is a nice one too. And it's on sale
It also depends on what you know already and how much time you have for the one app etc.
Starting from 'complete beginner', I'd recommend the Moog. It was a gateway synth for me, leading to SnuVxo, which led on to Reason. There are many paths and eurocrack's expensive (although if you can't resist the pull, I understand).
If you do get Model 15 and want some inspiration to pick apart and fiddle with, the 'Mercurial Strategies' preset pack is pretty great.
Best of luck.
Model 15 sounds incredible and unique. The fixed modules is also an advantage. Sometimes limit is good. And it is auv3
both are fabulous, and mirack is certainly more deep and comprehensive, but i think model 15 is better to learn on.
BOth! but miRack would be my first choice!
If you're ready to invest time and dive in then definitely miRack. There's no comparison to Model 15 except both are called modular synths.
miRack with its recently added new modules is powerful enough to compose full songs inside, with synthesis features unavailable in any other iOS app.
MiRack, Model 15 uses way too much CPU.
Can I get phat bass from MiRack?
Sure! Just connect the right modules.
You can even use custom oscillators with waveforms from real analog gear if you're after that.
And the choice of filters gives you some explorative work for the christmas season.
I highly recommend

There's even an O-Coast clone on patchstorage:
LOL, yup. Eventually, it's always both.
Edit: Ended up picking up both. Although most of the comments were right. Model 15 is great at learning the basics and making sick sounds, plus the UI is gorgeous. MiRack has so much modules that it seems overwhelming at first (although it's something I'm looking forward to spending a lot of time tinkering with) but there's a LOT of free additions.
They are both on sale today get them all!
Model 15 to learn east coast synthesis, Ripplemaker to learn west coast synthesis (the manual is ace) and finally miRack to get lost in cables.
All on sale right now.
There’s zMors Modular and Audulus as well, but I don’t find them intuitive to learn, although the latter has a fantastic helping community.
This was a promising page - the Mozaic patchstorage collection has become very useful over time. Time to dive in on this miRack BF sale!
For modular synthesis MiRack - just way more flexible.
But Moog 15 sounds a lot better. There are very few synths on IOS that sound genuinely analog - Model 15 is one of them.
So yeah... both?
Also Ripplemaker is great also... At $3.99 it's a bargain.
Then there's iVCS3 - the insane uncle in the basement. Sure he's drooling and looks kinda like a monkey, but he has also just built a time machine that works (kinda).
Love the colourful description
But he’s scary and difficult!
(And amazing)
