Simple way to record a phone call?

edited December 2019 in General App Discussion

is it possible to use audioshare or another recording app to record a phone call on an iphone?

a quick perusal of the app store leads me to sketchy looking apps that have high monthly subscriptions. I just need to record a quick interview for transcription.

I guess I can do speakerphone and record that with a mic, but hopefully there's a better solution.

  • Don't know if it can be done in device, but I use an interface that has a loopback functionality. Then in any recording app. In my case it’s a Yamaha AG-06, but any interface with loopback will do.
Useful for YouTube samples as well :-)

We really need something like a tiny class-compliant Lightning plug that can do stereo audio loopback. Those USB sound sticks with stereo line-in are probably the closest as of today.
For recording phone calls however I'm not sure if that would work.
Of course, Apple would have to try everything to not let other apps access the speaker and microphone while chatting.

What if you did screen recording, the built in one to iOS.... does that also record phone calls? I never tried it lol... but just throwing it out there. And then I guess you could somehow extract the audio from it (I think the shortcuts app has something for that..)

No idea if screen recording also picks up call audio! Worth a shot.

Seriously though, one way on iPhone to record your calls is by making a call and putting the recipient on hold, then calling yourself, then waiting until your voicemail message plays, then merging calls. Not sure what the time limit is for voicemails though.

yeah, that's what led me to post. I assumed that would work, but it seems to shut off recording when a call is active.
