App Showcase: Kit Complete on BM3

Put some respect on this☝🏽guy’s name. Haven’t seen many of his videos yet but happened past this super-ill (great) illustration of why many, many folks including Grammy award winning producers reach for Bm3 first among apps. Skip to the end to hear Kit go nuts with PT turntable cuts...nice 👌🏽

Simply peerless when it comes to Sample based workflows. Nothing is within the same galaxy.

BM3 is also a super stable AU host, has scene mode, chords and key locks, imo the best in-app midi controllers (legendary pads plus note/velocity pad on left of Ui) and many features that no other DAW have. There is just so much it does that can’t be accomplished in any other app. Conversely, pretty much everything any other app does can be easily accomplished in Bm3.

On or off desktop I haven’t found a better value as it relates to music production.

    I agree.

    It's only downside is latency.
As a complete system, it's brilliant.

    Hey @Gravitas

Can you elaborate on the latency issue?

  • @WillieNegus

    It doesn't have latency compensation
for Auv3 and Inter App audio plugins
so when you have audio that you would
like to apply effects to in parallel,
you will hear phasing for instance.
The audio signal doesn't reach the output at the
same time due to how the apps process the sound.

The two apps that do have latency compensation
are Auria Pro and AUM that I know of right now.

AUM compensates for hardware latency as far as I know.

Desktop DAW's now have latency compensation built in
and have done for quite a number of years
but you still have to manually adjust for signals
that go out of the box and back in.

    You can test this yourself.

    Create two identical tracks.
Put one of them out of phase
and with the exact volume level
    and you should hear nothing.
Apply an effect and turn the mix
to full original and you will hear a click
    or similar.
What you will hear is the delay created
by the app processing the audio signal.

  • Yup. I see it @Gravitas

Fortunately it doesn’t interfere or impact my workflow but should certainly be addressed. Which brings me to my only gripe...support consistency. Latest update was solid but I’m left wondering what the roadmap is.

I’d like to see scene mode get more love. Also, better midi routing implementation. This is nitpicking tho as we’ve agreed this app is bees knees.

It’s almost criminal at this price.

    Totally agree.

It also doesn't impact my workflow.
I actually use the latency for things such as reverb.
I only noticed it when I needed to do some parallel Mastering
and double signal processing, which is pretty much the same thing
    but for mixing.

I think BM3 is down to one man now and that is an immense
workload to take in especially for tracking down bugs,
making the app more efficient, adding in new features etc.

The main problem for me with BM3 is the sync.
It syncs solid with midi, not so much with Ableton though
    it does have sync start/stop.
I would recommend using midi sync, much more stable.

I'm going to get a second iPad solely for BM3 and leave it as is.
Using it as an MPC replacement but with more flexibility,
choices of effects and better features.
I could either trigger it with an external sequence
or use it's own inbuilt one.

As you can tell I like it a lot.

Though we don't know what's on the roadmap for it?

    I quite like not knowing.

    I’m with you @Gravitas

I actually sold my MpC live because I prefer my BM3 dedicated IPad Pro Live setup (Roli Blocks/Novation Mk3).

As you stated, the AU hosting the embarrassment of fx riches on iOS, web browser (in IPad) to easily download/access sample libraries plus sample from YouTube anywhere is unmatched.

I produce ad spots for companies and can pretty much mock-up in ad on the spot for clients easily accessing their content with the browser and quick layering grooves on top and recording whatever blurbs with a go mic.

    Can’t beat it!

  • @WillieNegus

I'm all for the iOS platform as a whole.

I recently purchased a new audio interface and was thinking to myself
what am I going to do with the old one and then I went doh!!!

    Plugin phone.

    Old interface plugged into phone?

    Works a treat.

    Brilliant.

So now I have both my iPhone and iPad for sketches to full blown production.
Tested both to run my new loopers and it's brilliant.
I've yet to test it with clients for music production but
what I do for my own personal production pushes it way
beyond what a client would ask for.

I did a recent gig in a castle, yep in a castle,
with my iPad as a live guitar rig and there were no
complaints at all and the bass player mastered
the track that won Song of the Decade.
Lana Del Rays song so you know.

    Tough critics.

    I hear you.
    It's fast, quality is astounding.

    Sheer brilliance.

Stability is improving as a platform with caveats of course.

    Still, it is great.

I love BM3 too and almost exclusively use as a host since the latest stable release but I may be missing something huge (or misunderstanding your convo).

Does BM3 have a built in web browser I’ve never stumbled upon?

I’ve been using Readdle Documents to get at sample libraries etc. but this would really improve the workflow.

Aw man. My apologies. The fault is how I worded it. I just meant Bm3/IPad as a rig vs MpC other sampling hardware.

There is no built in browser. I use Safari now that iPad Os supports downloads but also have used Readdle or GoodReader in the past.

  • @eyesunderground

Using the Files App you can download directly
to the BM3 sample folder or AudioShare and
    import from there.

Using the Tube AUv3 you can sample directly
    from YouTube I do believe.

  • Gig’n in a castle sounds sweet @Gravitas Especially after I just binge watched Witcher on Netflix.lol. Always had an obsession with castles, medieval period, etc. Sadly, none too many castles in America for me to visit...or are there?

I have no idea about castles in America.

I've visited castles in the U.K but to perform in one?

    Yeah, it was sweet.

The place is called the Walton Castle.

Here's a personal photo from the morning after.

  • @WillieNegus @Gravitas

All good. That’s what I thought you meant. Would have really had my mind blown if it did have the browser.

The workflow via Files/Dropbox or AudioShare + TubeAU has things mostly covered.

  • @eyesunderground

AudioShare used to be able to access the internet but due
to Apple restrictions it got taken away during one it's updates
which would've been brilliant, still the Files App is good for me
and now that we can access external hard drives and USB keys,
it makes storage and transferring files so much better.

  • @Gravitas @eyesunderground have you used BM3 with your desktop DAW via iDAM protocol?

Man o man this has really been a game changer for me. Obviously works for any iOS app but allows me to use my old MPC/Logic workflow of sampling/tracking out beats.

  • @WillieNegus @eyesunderground

    I'm totally iOS now.

    I don't use a desktop anymore and
I used to custom build and
    configure them for music studios.

My desktop stands disused now for over two years.

There are things that a desktop can do that iOS can't yet do
because it is a very young musical ecosystem.

    It's brilliant.

I'm going to get a couple more iPads for specific purposes.
    One dedicated for multitrack recording
another for synths and one for guitar and bass.

The only thing I miss with desktops is
sheer brute strength for warp editing.

It's going to be interesting to see what
happens with the more recent processors.

I'm able to think more modular than linear.
