Anyone interested in old analogue sample packs for iOS?
Hi!
As some might have read I am doing sampling of analogue gear such as the Juno-106 and Oberheim Xpander. What I do more than that is to put it into sample instruments for my iPhone and play around with it with the help of AudioLayer and GarageBand. I’m still working to optimise it, just wanted to check for interest in having these instruments on you iOS devices. I love to be able to edit pure waveforms of my synths, and then play and edit them lying on the couch or sitting on the train. I really think it’s way more fun than using the computer. Touch also makes the experience more intimate. Now I know that not everyone prefers playing a touch based keyboard but then of course we don’t have to, just set up a Bluetooth keyboard like the Xkey 25. Still, the portability of a real sounding analogue, with randomised layering on a mobile device is better than anything I’ve tried. I’ve been sent some very well sampled Jupiter-8 samples for instance, with lots of layers and I must say: it sounds awesome.
So what’s your thoughts on this? Would it interest you to get a hold of something like this?

I'm into exactly that, and coming from AudioLayer, I now got stuck with Obsidian in NanoStudio 2 for a couple of reasons.
See: https://patchstorage.com/platform/nanostudio/
Haven’t bought NanoStudio 2 yet. You think Obsidian is better than AL?
Color me interested
Yes I’d be interested, especially in Jupiter 8 samples since that was my main giging keyboard in the 80’s.
SynthJacker by @coniferprod would be your friend for this endeavor
No, it's different.
AudioLayer supports more samples, more layers, crossfade looping and streaming from disk, so you can build your dream grand piano with >1GB size but without crashing your host app.
Obsidian only supports up to 72 samples (24 in each of the 3 layers) but it's much stronger on the synthesis/filter/envelope/effects and especially on the modulation front, including modulation of the sample loop position or even simple things like modwheel support for pitch modulation - essential for rebuilding analog synth patches but AudioLayer simply cannot do it.
3x24 samples have shown to be a sufficiently good compromise for most instruments and although the sampler in BeatMaker 3 is very, very good too, the comfortable workflow in NS2 has won me over.
I'm only using AudioLayer for really huge acoustic instruments.
Me too😌❤️
I'd be interested in it as well.
Yes. I'm selling an AudioLayer toy piano on Gumroad NYOP. Super simple.
Bought it. Fantastic.
+1
Well, 24 in each layer might be too little for the analog variations to come off authentic enough. But still that’s 6 octaves, every 3rd note. With mod on sample loop positioning that might work fine. For ideas at least, and more precise DCO based synths. But then random rr is a must. It has that, yes? And can NanoStudio 2 be used as AUv3, and if so: how stable is it with GB?
@joachim_s - yes, I’d be very interested! I have both AudioLayer and Obsidian. I know that AudioLayer is the superior sampling platform, but for ease of use Obsidian beats it hands down, and posting your work to the Patchstorage website option makes it a cinch to download and install sample packs - but hey, I’ll be grateful for anything
If you can see your way to the weirder FX/ambient end of analog, all the better...
I've done quite a number of instruments in NI Kontakt by now, sampled from my analog and VA gear. Depending on the sound, sometimes it's enough to have one sample spread over two octaves, sometimes it requires sampling every 3rd or 5th note. For synth sounds, 24 per layer seems perfect to me.
and the modwheel can be used for layer crossfades and sympathetic resonance tricks.
The only case where that's quite limiting is an acoustic piano, but that doesn't mean one couldn't build a nice piano patch on it nonetheless. In that case, AudioLayer would be a more appropriate option because on the piano, we usually don't need pitch modulation
A must? Not always I have to say. The answer is Yope. I think I know of a hack to make RR work in Obsidian by the use of specially formatted wav files but it's not officially supported.
NS2 is no AUv3, it's meant to be a replacement for GB with the disadvantage (or MPC-style advantage?) that you have to treat audio tracks like samples e.g. in Slate. You can record while the arrangement plays, though.
If you depend on GB, AudioLayer looks like your only option.
Years ago, I somehow managed to import EXS24 programs into GB but I doubt that this is even possible with more recent versions of GB/iOS.
Cool!
However, the Jupiter-8 samples I got was sent to me by a friend who has amazing converters and who also made some pure waveforms in round robin with lots of layers. So I can’t be handing out those, I’m sorry. However, to explain some more, I just imported these waveforms into AudioLayer instruments for fun, without little to no changes in the setup of how many samples etc. It sounds amazing! And random round robin is key for analogue to really sound analogue. The difference to the original is so slim, especially in comparison to the analog modelling synths out there.
This is a simple example I made with Jupiter-8 and Juno-60 samples in GarageBand with AudioLayer. The Jupiter plays the arp and lead and the Juno-60 plays the bass. Note that these are pure waveforms fully edited in AudioLayer. These are not imported patches (!), but clean signals I edited into arp and bass. Not a difficult task of course, but it makes all the difference for to get the real feel of live motion. There are some cracks in the sound in this export. Haven’t quite figured out to get around that yet. I’ll maybe have to settle with fewer samples.

Sorry about the Dropbox link. Don’t know how to link to wav files in another way. Hope it works!
Interesting. If you want to you could send me some VCO based instruments without random rr, using the tech you mentioned and I’d be happy to try it out. Until I hear something better I believe random round robin is the way. And I love a discussion in the best way to do sampling, but this thread is more for getting in touch with people on if they even want deep sample instruments of analog synths in the first place, and more specifically: what they’re looking for in such instruments. To me GarageBand seems like the proper way to go to reach a broad audience.
Sorry but sharing samples shouldn't be a one-way street me thinks...
You can hear a few of my sampled instruments in the Digital D1 EXP-01 and presets tagged "rs2000". None of them uses RR.
Ok! Well I’ll have to check Obsidian out. Sounds fun 🙂
I’ll consider your perspective 🙂
Ultra Tasty!
Yes, it sounds very good I think! The quality of the sampling, that is
Hi Joachim, I’d definitely pay for a nice set of sampled patches of the Jupiter 8 for AudioLayer. I bought AudioLayer when it was on sale recently just to have it, I found some samples online and messed with it a little .. but my heart is not really into sound design anymore so having a collection of patches pre-made would really be worth it.
I’m going to go ever-so-slightly off topic and point out AudioLayer has round-robin and random layer capabilities.
Cool! Sadly as I pointed out earlier: these JP-8 samples are not mine to sell or hand out, sadly 😕 What I want to try out and do is get the Juno-106 and Oberheim Xpander out there. Perhaps not the most sought after synths, sadly. But they are great. Especially the latter one. Such a deep synth, with amazing VCO’s and giant filter selection that sound so good.
Maybe I’ll be able to get the JP-8 samples out there sometime. Problem is that I don’t know if the creator is willing. Let’s see what happens.
Yes. I know this. Maybe I wasn’t clear on that. This is why I am using AL, because of this. 🙂
No problem. I have a large sample set from the Prophet 8 which was released for free a few years ago, and there are always more synths waiting to be sampled
The Juno-106 is a great synth. Maybe it's a good idea to sample patches with chorus engaged because that's what we don't have on iOS: A good emulation of the Roland Juno chorus.
In that case, sampling every third or fourth key is a good idea to avoid noticeable chorus speedups at different transpositions. It still won't sound like the real deal (including the fact that it will rather round like each single voice had its own chorus) but it should sound great nonetheless.
Hi Joachim, yes I figured the JP8 samples you have couldn’t be passed on .. just wishful thinking. Ok Expander and Juno it is! I never had or even played an Expander so that will be interesting. Actually I never played a Juno 106 either, I did own the Juno 6 though before I got the Jupiter 8, but after I got the Jupiter I gave the the Juno 6 away .. kinda regretting that move these days lol. So yeah count me in all the way 👍
Yeah. And also: all subtractive editing will be done after the chorus, which won’t sound like the real deal. But now I’m getting nerdy 🙂
Here’s a clip I made with GB+AL of the 106 with chorus on (bass sound). Patches were done before sampling though (and the clip is very distorted, but you get the idea):
👍
The Juno-6 has a lot of the same characteristics as the Jupiter-8 though. Same kind of VCF, ENV and VCA. Maybe that’s why you felt you didn’t need both? But of course the certain pitch control of the 80s Juno’s give a specific flavour to it all.
Check this out in the meanwhile:

That dude makes some awesome sample packs right up your ally I bet. It’s for EXS24 or Halion I believe. Yeah, and Ableton.
