Is there anything like Studiomux for effects apps?
With Studiomux now a dead app, I've been using the IDAM (Inter Device Audio and MIDI) protocol to run lots of iPad synth and drum machine apps from/through Logic on my Macbook Pro.
It's been working really well, but as the audio only goes in one direction with IDAM I can't use any of the effects apps I have on my iPads. (I think? Unless I'm missing something?)
Does anyone know how I could utilise them in my Logic projects? I particularly want to use Igor Vasiliev's most excellent Altispace reverb app
I think there might be a way to do this by using an aux channel on a external mixer and running the audio from it into my second iPad, through the app, and back out to the aux channel? Would this or something similar work? I currently don't need to use an external mixer, so this method seems somewhat complicated!
Unless there is an app that can do this?
Comments
StudioMux still works fine on Win10.
MusicIO is definitely dead
Audreio is super expensive and haven't seen anyone using it
Studiomux + Modstep
I'm on a Mac and it's not working well at all. I must admit I haven't actually tried whether the effects part is functional but considering how flaky everything else is, I kind of doubt it!
I've never heard of this app before - I thought Studiomux and MusicIO were the only apps that had attempted this.
Does anyone know if it actually works properly? I don't think $25 is too much to pay to be able to use my iPad effects apps within Logic
How would that be work in Logic on my Macbook? I want to use my ipad effects apps within Logic
Oh, I've just seen there's IAPs for using it, and they're by the minute - something I've never seen before:
If that means what I think it does then that is RIDICULOUSLY expensive! What are the developers on? No-one's going to pay that!
Edit: I've just read some of the app store reviews and saw this:
Does this mean you can use the app with a lightning cable and not have to pay those crazy IAP prices - can anyone confirm?
I recommend getting an iconnectAudio4+ for doing this if you can afford it, worth the money.
Studiomux does the trick for your needs!
I'll use this in Ableton on Macbook every day without problems.
I emailed Audreio team requesting a demo vst plugin.
Are you saying that on a Mac, the effects part of Studiomux is still functional? Because using it to control synth apps on the iPad from the Macbook definitely does not work / works so badly it's not worth it. I keep reading that it all still works on a PC though.
But if the effects part still works on the Mac it sounds like it's worth giving it a try...
Let me know if you hear back / get a demo - I've seen people complaining that their support is somewhat lacking...
Everything about Studiomux works on a Mac....like I said before, it's my default use case
Not on my setup it doesn't - and I've heard many people say the same thing
@Acetone maybe other mac users can help you with StudioMux.
Will certainly post back if Audreio provides a demo plugin
Studiomux is a little flacky
But sometimes works well on my win 10 pc, haven't run it for about 4 months, had a few win updates
Might try again tonight, but last time run, had a few synths, and effects running on Ableton with my push as well
Good luck
More info needed to diagnose Mac - glad to chime in tho, and you’re right that there are quite a few posts about difficulties getting it going - but it definitely works. Hosting AU is always a good test app since free and basic (and hosts Mac AUv3’s). In many cases it’s easy to use the StudioMux Audio device, rather than the plugins, or both... many options!
+1 for StudioMux still working on Mac (Ableton). Never got the FX to work though. Midi to iPad synths and Audio (separate channels) to MacBook works flawlessly.
Very interesting... looks like I should be taking another look at Studiomux then, it'd be great to use it for iPad FX in Logic
I didn't realise there were different ways you could use this app when I was trying it before, any further info you can provide on this would be great :-)
Mac spec is: late 2011 13" Macbook Pro, Core i7" 2.8 Ghz, 16 GB RAM, running High Sierra OSX 10.13.6 and the latest version of Logic Pro X v 10.4.8... It's a slightly older machine with a new clean OS on it and it runs Logic absolutely fine, as long as you don't use loads of software synths - which is why I'm using iPad synths over IDAM!
You can use effect apps but only with the audio that is produced by apps on your iPad through Aum or Audiobus or whatever.
Maybe there is a workaround that routes your audio through an audio aggregate on your mac to a seperate audio output to your ipad and then back again through auv3 effect and idam to your mac?
I look at Smux as a patchbay - you've got 8 stereo tracks, plus a Master that always outputs combined audio from all the tracks. Once you've connected Smux to your Mac - check Audio MIDI Setup and you'll see an 18/2 interface carrying same name as your iOS device (10.5 is the name of mine in images below). You can select this for Input/Output, and you can aggregate it - even with IDAM if ya like. So any of the 8 tracks can be an Input, an Output, or both - and you can place Instruments or FX as you like within Smux or Audiobus. You can still use the plugins on the Mac as well, and you can further monitor the audio from any track on the iOS device from the built in speakers or headphones etc. Each Smux track can be set to monitor any of the other tracks by tapping the Roman numeral above the track - tap the bottom of the track to change between IAA and AB if you want more than single AudioBus track. You can drop just FX on an Smux track and set that track to capture audio from instruments on the other Smux or AB tracks - or on your Mac just set your audio output to that track and then you'll be running your Mac audio through Smux, or Audiobus. Couple images to show the interface in AMS, and in Hosting AU - Track D Instrument Slot you can Select the Smux Audio Device by channels, or use the Generator/FX, or both. And if you've got multiple iOS devices, you can aggregate the Smux instances from both - and easily route audio between them and your Mac as well.

Nope. Not for me. It's a glitchfest for a long time now when trying anything (it worked best years ago, before new iPhones, new iOS, Windows 10, and new computers). Midimux works great, at least.
Unless the Studiomux MacOSX server app was updated recently, Studiomux doesn't work with Catalina.
Has that changed?
Been running it since the 1st Catalina beta w/ no issues - wonder what the issue is?
+1
300 bucks is quite a lot for an extra few channels of audio! i have an icm4+ and never got on with the app, their 3rd party support system, and their updates and compatibility have been an issue as well - note the 1.6 average review on iOS.
it's amazing value for what it can do. One of the best pieces of hardware I've bought. The software apps is the weakest part, but it's good enough.
Anybody who says Studiomux is flawless on Mac (which requires further clarification as it isn't installable in some macOS versions) must have a very basic use scenario. Yes, it works, sometimes, in most cases, in some DAWs -- but there is a bug list as long as my forearm and that's just on the Mac side. The app is ancient and needs a serious revamp. I use it daily but I would be lying if I said it doesn't cause me some of the worst musical headaches ever. iConnectivity? Search the forum...Buyer beware.
+1. Absolutely love mine. Rock solid, and turns my hardware mixer, iPad, and aging Mac into a single, reliable system.
I even like the software now. Once you learn it, it’s powerful and straightforward.
Seconded - the iCA4+ is effectively two 4-channel interfaces, and you can use all hardware channels on both connected systems simultanously.
On top of that it supplies up to 5 stereo busses connecting on application level (from AUM into desktop sequencer tracks and vice versa. Works reliable.
Plus Midi DIN and an USB Midi hub with the same routing capabilities.
Saves alot of cables and may charge one IOS device, while keeping the 2nd charged (supplies power to run).
It's a very affordable device, if you run 2 or more systems parallel.
In my case a I add a ProTools TDM on MacOS-9 and a Creamware Scope via analog channels and thus could route their input devices into IOS (or 2 stereo busses with only 1 system connected). A ton of versatility...
Mac OS 9!?
