Xequence 2 and AUM Workflow
So as much as I’ve resisted getting out of the standard DAW workflow, the stability issues I’ve had with Cubasis 3 and GarageBand have driven me to look for alternatives.
I’m thinking that I could pretty easily build out a song’s midi tracks via Xequence 2 and run it through effects and instruments in AUM. From there, I can throw the recorded audio from AUM into one of the mobile DAWs for final arrangement. Or I can throw them into Logic in my MacBook.
Anyone have any tips on this, anything I’ll missing or not thinking about? Has this proven to be a fairly stable, reliable flow?

Xequence2 and AUM or Even Audiobus 3 are super stable mix for me. The top 3 apps I use to host everything!
First thing i do, open AB3, insert X2, and AUM, now incan switch between the three apps via the AB3 sidebar panel. Works like a charm! AB3 is super light on CPU and with state saving, all my X2 and AUM projects are nicely tucked away for quick recall.
I highly recommend this trio of super stable apps and build your templates from there.
Can you help me understand the role of AB3 here? I’ve used X2 to drive AUM and just use the app switcher thing in iOS to switch between them.
The AB sidebar is way more convenient for switching apps. I also prefer the reduced window-diving over AUM. I host all the apps I can in Audiobus for this ease of switching, and mainly use AUM for its routing and mixing. Generally everything I need is one or two taps away, and I don't have to mash the home button all the time.
(Yes, I know about the swipe up thing, for switching apps but I hate it.)
Okay cool, that makes sense. So it’s an ease-of-use thing, not a necessary piece of the puzzle.
I guess I’ll have to give this a try then.
Yes it's definitely optional and a matter of taste.
But, if you do use any IAA apps, and they support AB State Saving, this can be a great bonus.
Speaking of state saving, you can save an entire X2, AB3, AUM session as an AB3 session and ... most ... of the time recall the whole setup in one shot. When it works, this is a huge time-saver. Unfortunately it doesn't always work (no-one's been able to figure out if it's an X2 or AB problem). So, as a backup, you do want to save the X2 project every time before tearing down. I just name them with the same name as the AB3 preset.
Exactly. I save my x2 song and my AUM separately just in case. But so far rock solid trinity❤️❤️🙏☝️😌
You can also use audiobus remote on your phone to switch which is super slick.
There’s a video at the start of this thread that I have bookmarked to watch when I get time: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/33735/xequence-2-and-aum-modular-daw/p1
I use the trinity of AUM+Audiobus+Xequence2 as well. I love it. Check out the Xequence documentation for details. I avoided Audiobus for a while, not getting the point of it, but it's well worth it... state saving, easy app switching, and perhaps most importantly: IAA apps are more reliable in Audiobus.
I have an Audiobus preset called 'TEMPLATE" with AUM and Xequence both active / AUM set up exactly how I want it to start / and one instrument set up in Xequence controlling a softsynth in an AUM channel. Then, whenever I feel like jamming out a new idea, I open "TEMPLATE", rename it, and off I go. I usually start by swapping out the softsynth. Low friction.
As others stated.... once you get going with a new tune, I recommend that you save the AUM and Xequence sessions separately than AB; don't rely solely on AB's state saving. I've never lost anything, but just in case....
