Cool! Guess it’s time to work on getting the ol callouses back. So what do you do for cabinent impulse responses on an iPad, I have both paid and free IR’s tucked away on a hard drive somewhere .. is there an app that will load them to use with this amp?
THAFKNAR is an acronym for THe App Formerly Known As Rooms)
Just set up a preset for a cab you like. Whatever it is you don't like about the interface , you will only have to deal with the first time you set up your cab. It is efficient (for an IR), sounds good and inexpensive .
Right, I just tried it again (I like the Prince reference
)
It's now so much easier with the new IOS file system. Man is that a big improvement. It takes a few minutes to figure out. Low latency.
Lol what a name 🙄
Thanks espiegel 👍 Went ahead and got it. So I just imported my impulse responses to AudioShare and unzipped em. So I started ‘open in’ing’ them in THAFKNAR and it gives me the choice of .wav or impulse response .. so I hit impulse response but don’t see anything in the app after that, so I did it again but this time chose .wav .. and now see them in the apps file section .. but I’m a little baffled what to do next .. the manual isn’t real clear on this. I kinda need some hand holding on the actual steps to get my guitar cab IR’s to work right in the app .. help! 🧐
I think the IR option is there to record your own wave IR's like the shower or the basement or a parking garage or your guitar into you favorite amp with your best mic.
Yes, or you could sneak into a Van Halen concert and secretly record Eddie's cab, and then rush home and you you will sound just like Eddie.
I'm going to be 5150'ed following reading the joke and taking it too seriously. This way lies madness.
5150 refers to the California law code for the temporary, involuntary psychiatric commitment of individuals who present a danger to themselves or others due to signs of mental illness. It has been more generally applied to people who are considered threateningly unstable or “crazy.”EHV's Trade-marked Amp is called the 5150. So, you need to take a walk on the wild side to match his tone. I recommend amphetamines to achieve the right set of symptoms... first you'll be unable to sleep and eventually you'll experience the true meaning of paranoia.
"Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you." Being 5150'ed confirms this strongly held belief. But it goes away after about 6 months as the drug is purged from your remaining fat cells... no fear a few months of amphetamines and you'll have very little fat left.
So, to get your IRs into the reverb, you first get your IR files into the THAFKNAR app -- which can be done any number of ways. Once the files are there, tap an hold a file and choose Copy To Impulse Responses.
Now, that you have imported the IR, tap on Parameters in the lower "tab bar". When in Parameters, tap on Convolution in the upper tab bar. The IR you just imported will appear in the User set. You will see a list of all the available "sets" (IR folders) on the right side of the window.
The IR should now be available in the AU.
Remember when using cabinet IRs to use the full wet setting. Also, if you are using a mono source, you may want set up the plugin to use only the left (or right) input and left (or right) output to minimize the CPU hit.
Perfect, thanks espiegel 👍
I think this app is a big step for iOS guitar modeling. I've been a/b-ing this with Amplitube (but with cabs off, going into a stereo IR pedal), and they both are very good.
But I'm only going to use Amplitube with the external cab sim, when the BST100 doesn't require that. That's the 'big step', along with generally high quality are versatility.
Frankly, i've been waiting for something like this. But it's subjective, and so much so that I may hate it tomorrow. We shall see.
The iOS platform has potential to be much better than a desktop solution. An iPad is much closer to a dedicated hardware MultiFX device than any laptop.
Yes, this is also my feeling.
As soon as I tried both Nembrini amp sims, I found that their quality is top notch.
I have used or owned practically every single amp sim on the market for the past 15 years, so I have a clear view of the situation. Few sim amps are really good. One of them is the BST 100.
At the moment, it's my go to on iOS. Bias and Tonestack are simply part of a different league.
Some amps in Amplitube are very good, the Soldano, the Fender 2 bundle, but it's only IAA and it's a heavy app, with too many choices, and as someone has already pointed out, the difference from the desktop version lies in the quality of the cabs. They are not the same at all.
I prefer a single amp sim philosophy, like the Nembrinis, or sims from Softube, Brainvorx, Kuassa, etc.
Or a 4 amp sim like Scuffham S-Gear. No more than that, because I discovered that, in my case, having too many amps is very wasteful, as you spend a lot of time trying everything and very few playing really.
It's like when you smell too many perfumes, you eventually lost the ability to distinguish them.
My father always said: a thing done well is better than 100 so and so.
He was right.
An AUv3 Amp Sim that passes the @Flo26 test... That's news.
The fact that this app includes useful IR's by default and a huge range of tone options an AUv3 app I think it's a bargain. But it also serves as a Standalone Amp Sim choice at a great price. It's GUI is also really workable on an iPhone too which is often a problem with AUM-based Guitar Rigs.
FYI: Get the free Nembrini Crunck V2 Aim too. On IR's but you might already have an FX app for that need. If you don't like
a lot of distortion just dial the GAIN down to <5% and it's a great clean Amp too with a lot of "umph".
Bought and had a play this evening...it sounds really good, getting sounds similar to my THR-10C. The first amp sim on iOS that I’ve really enjoyed. It is not hard to coax nice cleans out of this. I was momentarily bummed when I saw it does not have the same cab and mic simulation that the desktop version appears to have (just the cab IRs), but I don’t even mind as it still sounds great.
@McD They aren’t IRs - but it does include an IR loader.
Nembrini have built cab emulations so you can do things like move the mics around. But they aren’t IRs.
@qryss thanks for setting the record straight. I’m liking the PSA 1000 a lot w/ THAFKNAR FOR THE IR with a magic Death Eye compressor for some sustain and soft saturation then EQ for more smoothing and some reverb. So many tools at hand now all AUv3.
@qryss how do you access the non-ir cab modeler?
I don’t know, I’m afraid. I just got that info by reading about it.
The cabs you can choose from within the app/plugin are emulated (not IR) but there is an IR loader if you want to add your own to use instead.
Is it perhaps that the Mac/Windows plugin has the cab and the iOS one doesn’t? I presumed the cabs were part of the ‘complete recording chain’ they speak of in the description...
@qryss yeah I’ve fiddled through every corner of the app and I think it only includes the cab loader (just look through the screenshots on the App Store). It would be a shame but it still sounds fine.
There are 3 boxes at the top of the default window with:
BOOST NORMAL RACK
Pick RACK
In the new GUI the upper left shows a description of the active CABINET + MIC. Touch it and there's a listing of 28 different
choices to select from for FREE! 24 more than I have bothered to import into my AUv3 IR apps like ThAFKnAR!
I just love an app with presets that displace the need for more apps to be loaded.
Thanks, @McD - I guess they are the non-IRs I read about (because of the mic options).
The reviews are all of desktop plugins but this guy has some good things to say. Certainly worth a read!
https://honestampsimreviews.com/2019/07/04/nembrini-audio-bst100/
I’ve used the Brainvorx amp sims intensively in the last years, I recorded 3 cds with them, so now I understand why I love the Nembrini’s sims too. To have them on iOS is a pure delight.
The iOS version doesn’t have a IRs loader, but you can use one of the 28 presets, or bypass the cabinet and use your own impulses with apps such Thafknar, which is free. 👍
Fwiw, THAFKNAR is great. IR loading as AUv3 is an inexpensive IAP for THAFKNAR and not free. Well worth its slight cost, imo.
So they are emulated cabs and not IRs? But I saw Choptone presets for Cabs ad those are IRS, so I assumed they were. I need to get this straight. Did somebody read this, or are the developers here?
For me ,these are IRs.
Curious if playing latency is any better nowadays using iOS guitar sims? A few years back I spent a lot of money on guitar apps only to realize it wasn’t for me, the latency was just too noticeable and the feel was lost, the curse of using real amps for years, I guess. I have several Yamaha modeling boxes that sound great so if I need electric guitar I just record to iOS from those.
Oftentimes, the latency is due to buffer sizes. Most of the amp sims seem to have latency not noticeably worse than that of the buffer. I find 256 fine and 512 borderline. Some plugins (like Brusfri) contribute noticeably to latency even with small buffers.
@Nubus Fairly certain that the cab simulation on the iOS is done with IRs. If you look through the options in the iOS app, they are the same IRs that seem to ship with the desktop version (looking through the manual). I do think that they should indicate in the app description the cab sim is done with IR and not modeling. It sounds good though.
They are IRs optimized to save resources and allow to have the same rendering of the desktop version. From Nembrini’s support.
