Solved: Suggestions for crackle and hiss creation?
Hi all,
I’m starting to expand my dark ambient noodlings away from just tons of reverb (though that’s always good, I’m looking at you FAC Alteza) to lofi analog noises.
Hainbach is my hero in this regard. (BTW in his latest podcast, he name checks the Quanta grain synth he did presets for, and said he is working on a ‘test equipment’ style oscillator App for musical use. Should be interesting. I love what he does with that old kit.)
What I am aiming for: My Sound stage ideal is a dusty reel to reel with a wonky tape pack in a damp cellar, playing half speed old torch songs recorded off a dodgy shortwave transmission on a 1940s valve radio set. Kind of thing.
Forgotten sounds of melancholy and regret...
I have one tape echo sim (RE1, love it) which hits some of these points but I am interested in any FX or generator apps which can create or process Sounds like fluff on the needle, vinyl clicks and pops, radio crackle, hiss, hum...
AU preferred, but even old and broken old apps will do as long as they will run on either my current IPad or my ancient IPad 4, because as a last resort, I can audio sample or screen record.
All suggestions appreciated.

check IR reverbs with proper impulses!
Though it's an old app have a look at beat-machine.
Here's the link as I got told off in one of my threads.
https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/beat-machine/id505825861
It has a section in there that adds noise, hiss etc, etc and it's currently free.
You could sample the noise and rework it into your dark ambient noodlings.
@Gravitas : excellent! Got! Thanks!
*** UPDATE *** This is great, just tried it out, does exactly what I want for one shot and short samples, works fine as IAA in AUM, offers a lot of vinyl noise/glitch tweaking flexibility, and import from AudioShare. I think this is all I’m going to need for one shots - and it’s free! Now: who’s got ideas for something similar as a continuing effect on a running AUM channel? (Pushy, moi?)

Electrogene is awesome for adding hiss, noise, radio dial style effects, and general lo-fi:
https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/electrogene/id1435301903
@AndyPlankton : thanks, I will check those out, but maybe wait for a sale. Electrogene is a total bargain at £4.99 (see below) and it is scratching the precise itch I have right now.
@richardyot : see, that’s why I love this forum. Electrogene bought, and it is the perfect complement to Beat Machine, very easy to use/understand and creates exactly the range of sounds I had in mind. I consider this now solved.
Off to make sounds of despair and loss. Well, you’ve gotta keep busy in the Days of the Plague, right?
Ooh, electrogene looks fantastic.
You might also want to look at Tonebooster's Reelbus. It's an outstanding tape simulator which can simulate all kinds of tape effects from boards of canada wow and flutter, to very subtle professional saturation effects. While I love RE1 for it's looper, I find Reelbus is better for the tape side of things. I usually put it on the master bus, set it and forget about it.
@cian : thanks, good to know, I’ve held off Reelbus because I already have RE1 but it’s something to think about if it fulfills a different niche.
AUFX:Dub, AUFX:Space and Echo Pad are some older apps (in the delay/reverb area) with some noise options.
But i'm still unsure if it will fit your Hainbach-style needs
BTW, one app that seems sort of abandoned but may seem like something that fits your style is Waverails
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/waverails/id1125501101?ls=1&mt=8
@senhorlampada : Ooh, interesting. Checking out waverails now. Thanks for the heads up.
@Svetlovska, are you familiar with IceGear's RedShrike? I think it has some nice noise options as oscilators. May be nice for some experimentation.
Embeding Jakob for a quick intro into it
@senhorlampada : heard of it, but not heard it. Thanks for the link, I’ll take a look.
iOptigan may do it for you
@JeffChasteen : wow, people keep surfacing apps I never even heard of - in this case of a piece of hardware I never even heard of! Interesting, thanks...
4Pockets Time Machine is great for the vinyl stuff. In addition to warps, hiss and crackles, it also has a decent stylus drop effect.

E-cigs/vapes do good crackles and hissing
@BlueGreenSpiral : as a non-user I didn’t know this until I got the full version of Ableton Live a while back. Vape noises are included in the sound library, and I’ve already made some use of them in a spoken word thing I’m working on at the moment. Good call though.
You’re welcome. The developers have just announced it is now at the low low price of
FREE!
@JeffChasteen : yup, I got it, bought all the IAP. It’s wild.
