AAAARRRGGHHH. still don't understand saving things in iOSland

Just spent an hour tweaking a preset, which I'd renamed from a factory preset, in Sugar Bytes Factory. Went to try to save the changes. There is no obvious (to me) way to know how, or if, your changes are saved, so in my random clicking around I clicked on my new preset name (in the far right column of the preset window), which (OF COURSE!) loaded my renamed copy of the factory preset, without any of my edits. And I could find no way of getting my changes back.

What am I doing wrong? Either I don't know how to save, or once you've renamed something, any tweaks you do are no part of that preset? Surely not?

I've had similar confusion in other apps, doing stuff in AUM then loading a different file, and not being prompted if I want to save changes. It saves everything as you go, so tweak at your own risk???

slightly frustrated and baffled.

    Ok so I just remade my patch, and somehow managed to find it. hit the disk icon, hit the next disk icon, and resave under the same name.

    I suppose I'll get used to it...

    I feel that Mac OS is moving toward this direction as well... :(

    @SimonSomeone quick tip. When iam doing preset experiments i save as a project as a back up if using within a DAW host. Then go through the trial & error saving presets after.

    In OSX if you hold down Option and click the File menu you’ll get Save As as an option. Used to be Shift Command S was Save As but they changed it to creating a duplicate file which you then have to save. I don’t get that one at all!

    I don’t think it’s an iOS thing as much as it seems the devs don’t follow the protocol that’s been in place for years in the computer world - Save and Save As. I’ve seen many apps where the devs have created their own methods which are often confusing.

    I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds it sometimes confusing. Some handy things there I didn't know, like the hidden 'save as' in apps that now only seem to have 'duplicate', on OSX

In Pages, for example, previously if I made a change and then changed my mind, I knew that once I tried to close the doc it would ask me if I wanted to save, which I could say "no". Now, it just auto-saves and, when I close the doc, it closes without asking, and my previous version is gone, damn! I need to get used to this new Streamline World...

    In most cases there is a document history you can go through to find previous versions.

    Better would be, if lots of people complain, open cases, write feedbacks - to get things straight again.
    I'm Windows based and here I did not see such strange new ideas yet.

    Nope. Implicit saving has been very consciously and explicitly introduced in iOS since the very first version, and for an extremely good reason: to make sure that iOS would not feel like an old fashioned technocratic operating system. Getting rid of file management is a very good start to make technology feel human again.

    Why?

    Because file management is a horrible waste of time and nobody enjoys doing it and most humans are notoriously bad at it. I applaud Apple for trying to steer the planet away from that 80s paradigm and making it all invisible and transparent for normal humans.

    If you write something on a piece of paper, it is saved. If you write something on a virtual piece of paper, it is also saved. It's a very natural concept.

    The key is that, as with any change, the more you try to resist it, the more frustrating it gets. My advice is to embrace it, because it is ultimately an improvement once you unlearn the old technical way of looking at it :)
