Hi! I'm also using NS2 on my ipad these days, and after learning the shortcuts with the interface I can say I'm really getting things done. I wanted to ask you: what are the empty tracks on your project? Are they just empty tracks with midi that get sent to the Ruismaker main track above? If yes, that's and neat and clean approach to separate drum parts, I didn't realise you could that!
Exactly. You select the track and then long press the add track button and select “Add track lane”.
Each of those lanes sends midi to the ‘master’ track. You obviously don’t get separate outputs though, all the audio feeds through as if it was 1 track.
It’s a good way of arranging as you can mute various sounds quickly in the arrange screen.
Sorry I don’t have them anymore. Once I go the bits I wanted out of Ns2 on my iPad I deleted NS2 completely. I just use it on my iPhone now.
Try this from this old thread though. I could repeat the issues every time by following the steps in the post at the top of page 2 in this thread:
https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/34011/nanostudio-2-problems-anybody-else/p2
...it seemed to be mainly iPad Air 2 users that could recreate the problem IIRC.
Speaking of AD plug problems, I’ll probably have to go with Rough Rider 3 as giving me grief - it’s such a cool plug, will be a shame to give it the boot! If I take it out and my project performs better, it’s getting deleted forever. No matter how cool it is.
Anyone point me in the direction of a slamming compressor along the lines of, say... Rough Rider 3? 😁
I for myself feel 90% ready to ditch all my desktop/laptop stuff and try to go full iPad Pro for music creation.
If there would be Logic for iOS (however they do it) i already would have done this maybe.
So far its mainly the DAW and some FX which let me stay with mac.
IOS has some really nice and unique tools i will never get on my mac and vice versa.
What often drives me crazy is that iOS lacks a few workflow speed ups which even makes more sense on a smaller mobile device for me.
One thing i would like to see is multi AUv3 editing. Its even rare in the desktop world but once you play with this there is no way back for me. F.e. there is a spatialization tool which works together with a reverb tool. Now you start to use several instances. You can set now groups where you can edit/change parameters of a whole group or single instruments within one GUI.
Simple said you can edit all your instances while you just have to open one GUI. This would be a major step up for iOS workflow for me since screen space is already a problem if things get more complex.
Next thing would be drop and drag everywhere. Since it possible in theory i wonder why so many apps not using it.
Instead of a painful copy/paste and whatever workaround i just want to open an app and just drop f.e. samples into a sampler/sampler module etc.
Its just that very often my laptop can do things 10 times faster while iPad could do the same in theory.
So for some years i would say its early days but its not that iOS music had to start at zero really like the beginning of music software decades ago.
So as much as i love all the hobby and independent developers on iOS i really hope we get more pro which do it for their mainly income. In general an iPad feels more like future as my macbook f.e. and also when it looks awesome on paper it seems to have some major limits in terms of software and also maybe hardware (multi-core support for music apps please).
I know i can use both right now but i just like to focus these days on one device as my workstation and then totally adopt to its workflow.
I might just do the experiment (again) and try to stay on just an iPad Pro and see how it goes and inspires me maybe to rethink my workflow.
Indeed, it helps me to focus on actually making music.
It may very well be a plug-in problem, but NS2 fails spectacularly with it. It means you end up With an app that can’t save, open, export, nothing. I’d rather it just crashed. Ns2 locks up and makes getting it working again a pain.
Stopping the project makes no difference. Ns2 becomes completely unresponsive. You can’t open another project once it falls over. You can’t export. You can’t mix down. You can’t save. Or save as. Nothing. Ns2 becomes unusable until you delete the project or plugins from the iPad (as it returns to the same borked state even after a restart as it auto loads the same project leading to a catch 22).
I’ve tried the same plugins and procedure in AUM and GarageBand with no issues.
I’m not giving the issue any more attention though. I’ve wasted a ridiculous amount of time already.
It’s much easier just to stop using Ns2 on the iPad. Ns2 works so much better on My iPhone I’ll just use it as an iPhone only app for now.
I may return to it when I upgrade my iPad but I’m in no rush. I have a MacBook Pro so don’t need a more powerful iPad for music.
Yep! Also waiting to ditch my desktop Logic setup and go fully flexible mobile (to be able to always take music work with me and even take my setup with me on stage 🤤).
When it comes to FX plugins I’m very happy on iPad! Great reverbs, most of the Fabfilter stuff some good compressors and nice Klevgränd plugs to add character. More or less same amount and level as my desktop plugins. You also get great synth for iPad. But when it comes to hq sample or physical modelling instruments...not there yet. When it comes to DAW with just enough features to properly work on audio and midi plus having a lot of mixing/routing options...not there yet. Well close but not there yet.
Just waiting for the missing 30% to make the move. Hopefully doesn’t take years anymore. Been waiting years already. Oh well 😅
I answered the first explicitly.
As to your second, I’ve done my bit. More than should be reasonably expected.
I just want LOGIC on iOS. But if i could get at least Alchemy (the full one) and on top my favorite software modular P900 (which might happen in future since they seem to take the code to JUCE if i understand it right) and the coming FX from them also is for iOS (at least that is what they some weeks ago).
FX give me Replika XT and the 2CAudio stuff and i´m there.
These tools i cannot replace with any iOS app yet. Some come close in some areas but not where it counts for me.
But 1-2 years from now. Maybe, hopefully!
Well that’s not too much on your list

Interesting never heard of 2CAudio.
1-2 years ago I also said “maybe in 1-2 years” 😄
Actually in 2012 I started to dream about an iPad music setup. We came a long way since then. Got AUv3, the DAWs are getting better and iPads are powerful now. So sooner or later
I miss the big software instrument companies like Native Instruments, Spitfire Audio (mainly Labs and Originals), one of the big drum libraries, maybe Pianoteq.
But yeah if Logic finally arrives the included instruments will also do it for the beginning. Nice drums and strings at least.
FX wise I’d like to see Valhalla, Klanghelm and something like Waves RVox.
Good point. A big hurdle in the iOS world is accepting the multiplicity of ways to compose a track.
I find Gadget an excellent toolbox for composing & arranging.
Yeah this was what I was getting at, perhaps it came out a bit harsh. I mean I learned what I said the hard way too, I wasted a lot of time on stuff that didn’t matter and didn’t get many tracks finished. It’s a journey for sure
I don’t know why I am waiting for NS2 to get audio tracks and AUfx automation before using it again. Even in it’s current form it seems to have been one of the easiest and flowiest musical experiences I have had with some of the best near-complete results I have had on iOS... yet I wait.
Valhalla is really great and cheap. I have the Valhalla Delay (but prefer still Replika-XT), the reverbs are O.K. but i prefer others. I think there are already tools on par with this on iOS as well.
There are just some unique tools i need my mac for and they just run with a multi-core processor so it will be some years maybe until i see them on iOS. And who knows if mac and iOS then already are one. Of course nothing wrong to use the best of all worlds. But creating full things in iOS is still a bit pain and takes too long for my patience these days and using IDAM to connect my iOS device with my mac is a bit buggy and i always get terrible latency after some time. Also there is something strange. When i use f.e. my favorite spatialisation/panning tool it sounds a lot more flat on the iOS side so. Something is wrong with the connection. Not sure. So i gave up on this mostly too.
Means i create mostly in NS2 iOS and Garage Band or just Logic and using audio from iOS.
Sure i bet i could do nearly all on iOS but not mixing and of course then there are my Kontakt libraries.
Zenbeats is very similar to NS2 with audio tracks and AUfx automation.
I have been hearing this but seeing an IAP point system and two star rating just makes me bail.
IAP’s are really no different than any other app. Choose the loop or preset pack, go to the Cart, purchase like any other app or IAP.
Anyone who rates this app 2 stars is just plain wrong. It’s as good or better than most other iOS DAWs. There were some issues that have been fixed and others they’re working on. No showstopper for me.
I didn’t like it at first. Now I’m using it almost exclusively. Why didn’t I like it? Because I hadn’t really taken the time to get to know it. That’s on me, not the app.
It could very well be a case of some douchey 1 stars throwing things off.
I bailed when it felt that audio tracks was more like loop launching without sufficient audio editing for me but maybe I bailed too soon.
I don’t use the loop mode. Just the linear mode. In some recent posts they requested input for audio editing. I don’t recall that there was much feedback about it. I feel the app is underrated with a lot of potential with a few fixes.
@anickt have you just been using linear from the start or have you figured out the loop > linear workflow? - I saw something written somewhere about recording clips over to the timeline but can’t find it anywhere now...
When I first started I didn’t realize there were two modes. 😆 My preference is linear and that’s what I’ve been using.
I don’t think it’s a good point in this context. More shitty than harsh. You have no idea about my abilities, limitations, talents or lack thereof.
I can do without this kind of crap. My wife is working 12 hour shifts risking her life in hospital and I can’t even post a little story about making a crappy track on a frikkin phone as an ill fated attempt to distract myself for a minute or two without someone wading in and having a go in a thoughtless attempt to make themselves appear superior.
I’m all about Drambo these days. Using it within AUM has been liberating. I can use it how i see fit and just enjoy the process of creating.
I come from an Ableton+Push2 background so the notion of a step sequencer based workflow is totally familiar to me.
So far Drambo is very CPU efficient and since i can live in AUM and sequence i can go routing crazy to my hearts content.
Having multiple instances of Drambo playing and sequencing is composing on a whole new level for me. I feel like i have 5 OctaTracks at my disposal now. 🤯

Just giving it another try now. I must have got the free iOS unlock a little while ago and forgot about it. Seems quite intuitive and pretty smooth. The only thing I am wondering is if there is no way to automate AUs via their own interface. ?
No but you can draw automation against a background of the clips in the timeline. It’s pretty quick. Automation can freeze at times so I make sure to save first
