Workflow (that old chestnut)

hey all,

Would love to hear people's workflows. I'm trying to work out the best way forward. Auria Pro keeps crashing on me, and is fiddly as hell to use. Cubasis 2 is limited but seems good for a scratchpad and sketching out ideas. AUM is good for live, and can of course record separate tracks.

How do people sketch out ideas? Then go on to master and mix and finalise? So many options!

A little about how I work - I like to loop a riff and keep adding to it until I have something interesting and inspiring. And then break into arrangement and sculpting the structure of the track. Cubasis seems ok, but I wonder if I'm missing a better workflow.

Thanks!

  • I usually sequence in NS2, GarageBand or Gadget, then export the audio stems to Auria Pro for mixing and vocal tracking. Works for me without any major hiccups, in fact I'm very happy with how well this approach works. YMMV of course.

If Auria Pro is crashing is likely to be because of a specific plugin, so it might be worth trying to track down which one is causing the problem.

  • I use AUM to record loops from various apps. I get the track built and then import the loops into cubasis 2 for arrangment.
I cant comment on mastering yet as im new to all this.
My aim at the start of the year was to create ten tracks and make them into a 30 min dj mix and its coming along ok at the moment.

Hey Richard, I get Auria crash too. What plugin do you use?

Interesting, thanks. When you say you 'get the track built', do you mean a loop of a specific length? What do you mean by 'track' in AUM?

Hey Richard, I get Auria crash. What plugin do you use?

    I use many. Amongst others:

DDMF MagicDeathEye, ToneBoosters Reelbus, ToneBoosters Morphit, Klevgrand ReAmp, Klevgrand Luxe, Audio Damage Replicant, all the FabFilters, Eventide Blackhole, Eventide Ultratap, RRS EQ3.

The above are all in use in my current project with no crashing. If there is a plugin causing problems I usually try and remove them one-by-one until I can narrow down the offending AUv3.

  • Random live jams in AUM is about my limit now on IOS, and then exported as audio files to the Mac for mucking about with. Pretty much all my music is done on the desktop now.

  • My crash are mostly at project loading and also after crash I loose plugin settings.

I only mix audio stems in Auria no midi.

These are the plugin I use to mix my current projet and only project of 12 songs recorded on pc. They are in 12 different project file.

    Klevgr korvpressor
    Klevgr REAMP
    Tonebooster (EQ, barricade, reverb, morphit)
    FAC chorus
    Nesi LRC5
    Tonebridge
Auria (channel and master strip, convulsion reverb, psp stereo delay)

Yes I'm guessing there is a plugin in the project causing a crash on load. Try duplicating the project and then removing the plugins one by one until you find the culprit.

I create 8 and 16 bar loops of say drums, bass, synth etc then have a jam session to build how I want the track to sound.
I started off recording the jams which is fun but its hit and miss to get it right.
I import them into cubasis as its easier to arrange the structure of the track and alter.

I think this is exactly how I want to work. Today I did all that but in cubasis, so it was limited to a loop. I felt quite restricted, so maybe doing the same thing in AUM and recording tracks is a better way. I love the immediacy and simplicity of AUM.

Do you ever record iOS synths directly onto audio tracks in cubasis? If so, how?

  • Hobby guy here. BM3 is still my go to. I was going through an 'export to desktop' to 'finish' phase but my motivation would plummet to zero once exported (typical day job mouse/keyboard reminder malaise). Anyway, I am just morphing my tastes and style to fit whatever I can do almost entirely in BM3 (I feed it stuff from other apps at times) until another option (NS2 audio tracks?) comes along.

I only use cubasis to arrange the loops into a track so have never recorded into it.
AUM is great and with ableton link enabled apps so much fun to jam away with.

I've tried BM3 for a bit. I like the scenes mode a LOT but maybe I need to take a look at the rest of it, try an entire track in DAW mode!

I have to say I’m impressed with BM3. I can immediately see I can do what cubasis cannot - record directly from a midi synth onto an audio track, AND record any track to any track (ping pong). I was amazed cubasis couldn’t offer this. (No, this is NOT freeze - what if you wanted to play along with something at the same time, or tweak a parameter on the fly?)

I’m going to pursue BM3. The layout is a bit weird but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.

Here is my approach...recently I fancy doing live jams, recording several versions and choosing the one that fits the best to my ears.
Aum ....drum parts have each individual level controls/mutes or fade in/outs ( controlled by Launchcontrol Xl)
Melodic synth/lines...used with Step poly Arp, Rozeta Cells or bassline...and the nice tip from Audiodabbler in creating a Aum crossfade in between two channels with the Sends ( controlled by Faderfox Mega supa' power tower...both** MX12 and PC12)** where i can map everything from intrument level, pans, sends ...effects to buses and my mom's kitchen mixer... :) )

Here is one track, where I had this approach

Anyone else in jamming and leaving behind the grid and line song mode? I realized that in my situation, my tracks get a more obvious natural vibe and groove... , compared to linear ...loop copy /paste clips on a timeline

    Great track! Thanks for sharing.
So you did this entirely in AUM? You didn’t spit the tracks out into a DAW and work on it?

    Exactly! No daw. Thank you!
Hit record and play...channel lines volume, muted ,panning and all synth parameters on the go.
I give maybe around 5 versions for a track and it is a faster workflow( at least for me)

  • Here’s my workflow...and how I use it.

  • I’m making psytrance, mostly old school 90’s type.

First I create a MIDI line with a 303-type synth either in Troublemaker or AB3/Rozeta Bassline or Pure Acid. I do the same for the drums.

Then I copy it into NanoStudio 2. From here I create the full arrangement of the song from intro to the end. I spend most of my time here.

Export the individual audio stems and work on these in Auria Pro and/or Logic Pro X. I do all the mixing here and additional FX automation since NS2 doesn’t have that feature yet.

Then I master either in Auria Pro and/or Logic Pro X.

Once NanoStudio 2 gets FX automation and audio files then I may do everything there and only use AP/Logic Pro if there’s something I need from those or if I want to use a specific desktop VST.
