Any sound designers out there?
Hey all,
I'd love to know what people are using for sound design - specifically sound effects and textures used in film making. I'm going to try and use my lockdown time to create a nice library of spot effects for video making, such as rises, sweeps, whooshes, pulses, throbs, impacts, etc, perhaps some more exotic textures too.
Think Transformers, horror movies, Tony Scott movies, etc.
I already have most of the popular apps, including build-your-own apps like Drambo and MiRack.
Cheers

You may choose whatever source, the crucial part is to get the ambience right and that's about it (imho)
This applies to the (static) environment and to sounds in motion, near/distance, passing, leave and enter scenes, etc.
But my question was to see what apps people are using to create those source sounds.
Yes, I did understand the question - but it was about sound effects and textures in a cinematic context.
In this case the source itself is less important than the particular relation between audio and visuals.
A Philicorda organ recorded in a dry room (or via line out) will have a bewildering impression if used as the background sound of a scene in a cathedral (or in Alien I), but it may work great once the acoustic environment (set by the reverb type) matches.
I like BM3 as a sound design tool. It allows for multiple layers plenty of env and LFO for modulation of things lie pitch or whatever. Here is a video I did showing how to make a blaster. I do seem to dive in and create some more sound design tutorials for BM3.
Thanks man, but I’m specifically interesting sound creation, as in, electronic sound design. So I’m wondering what people use to do that. I get what you mean though, thanks.
Awesome thanks!
Amarillo and Factory from Sugar Bytes is what comes to mind.
touchscaper is a good one, samplr, crustation, Alteza. Cyclops, Drambo, wavefolder. dbdualvcf that’s just a few. there are so many great ones out there. for swooshes and sweeping effects. i like to take a simple percussive sound add a ton of effects after it to create some really odd overtones, record a sample, put that sample sample, play it back in reverse in samplr, and at dual vcf filter after that with some compression and touch of reverb and delay. that’ll get you your transformer type sound.
Thanks!
Yeah I’ve seen those. Factory is interesting. Will check out Amarillo
Aparillo will be found on the AppStore
Anyways... these two are GOLDEN!
Yes Aparillo, Factory and Shoom and good for cinematic sounds
Wavefolder and TBDualVCF look awesome. I love the idea of getting feedback on iOS.
If just starting out pick something simple with a randomizer feature.
My sound design needs are mostly met by using various Granular processing apps; iPulsaret being my favourite. Coupled with strange sometimes homegrown impulse responses in Thakfnar, or Rooms as it was called.
With Mi Rack there's the potential to patch up pretty much any sound that you have in your head. Depends on time and will to learn synthesis. I'd recommend Tonebusters and Eventide Blackhole for reverbs and dig into controlling / modulating their parameters to create space.
Take a relatively long sound and snip just a cycle of a part of it and filter and reverb.
Take a short rich sound and stretch in out it time (Amazing Slow Downer etc) and use as atmosphere.
FM and PD synths are your friends as are waveshapers.
Get a bunch of little cheap noisemakers to get inspired.
This is awesome thanks. I have hexagliphics, it’s amazing.
