Idea: @rs2000
Coding: @MrBlaschke
Pythonista: App-Store
Drambo: App-Store
Vectornator: App-Store (free atm, 202005)
At first i want to say that i am in no way affiliated to either of the developers of the used/named apps.
I simply chose Vectornator because it is free (at least actually, 202005) and wanted the most people with interest to have a solution that is iOS only based and possibly free of any charge.
It was a Friday morning, coffee time, and i exchanged mails with a (musical) buddy - namely @rs2000.
He explained an idea that i (might have) heard before - possibly from him ![]()
I thought about a solution and found myself coding first things half an hour later.
Progress was quickly done and somehow the idea of a vector-program to draw the curves came up.
Well, i don't know who will use these tools to actually do what they are intended to do. But it was a fun journey and if at least @rs2000 is happy with it the goal is reached. Possibly @samflash3 and/or @McD will have some fun ripping the code apart and studying it. ![]()
Anyway. This workflow is meant to manually draw exact shapes for filtering/manipulating audio inside of Drambo. A music software that runs on iOS devices.
You draw your shape/curve in a vector-based-program (Vectornator) and convert this data to a usable shape-form for Drambo's GraphicShaper.
The workflow is:
- draw your shape
- export it as a vector-based file (SVG)
- convert it into a file that Drambo understands
- import the converted data into Drambo
- make music
Things you need:
- Vectornator Template
- Python script
Both files are provided by me "as is" via my DropBox: DropBoxLink
I made a companion video which you can find here: YouTube
If you run into any issues or have any suggestions feel free to get in touch.
I will see what i can do - no promises made.
The wish is to do the same for the Graphic Env inside of Drambo. I will see if i can add this later.
Thanks and take care,
MrBlaschke

Super kudos.
Thank you.

If it's easy to answer without research, I wonder: can the free Pyto be used in lieu of the $10 pythonista? I doubt I have the patience to follow along but maybe the video will get me believing it's not difficult.
Just curious about the learning curve and the $10 expense to try.
@McD Sadly not - just downloaded and tested it. Pyto has no „Share“ extension integration. There „might“ be a way using the iOS Shortcuts app with this but i can not test that atm. Sorry mate.
Pyto is not free, it's the same price as Pythonista.
Really. @Wim mentioned it was free and I grabbed it then. I'll also keep an eye out for Pythonista "sales events".
I've been concerned that one had features the other does not so it looks like this won't be the project that makes me do something with IOS Python.
@MrBlaschke - Haha, thanks for the shoutout. I see Python code, I save it to dig through. Here’s hoping I’m able to make something useful (eventually).
Also, interesting idea to use a vector based app and dissecting the image. I haven't looked into image processing, but I'm guessing it's just X and Y coordinates decoded to bits.
@McD - I can’t believe I missed the “Free” Pyto sale in December. Ah well. It’s all for the best. Already had Pythonista.
On the plus side, I did see the free app “Lib-term”, and “a-shell”. Gonna dig through it.
I got it during a brief period when it was free.
Yes and I grabbed it too when you mentioned it. Have you made anything useful with it yet?
Nope. Just some things to see if I could do them, such as accessing MySQL databases at work, downloading stock quotes and stuff. I tried to get that library that splits out vocals, etc from audio working, but it's not compatible with the latest version of Python that Pyto uses, and I didn't feel like making the effort to see if there was any way around that.
BTW, I think you use Vim on iOS. You can run python stuff from Vim, FYI.
Thanks @Gravitas ! 🤓
That is pure magic! Incredible that can be done and even more that this can be done in an iOS only Workflow! Kudos 🙌🏼
Thank you @david_2017
This is an interesting and cool idea, but I don’t understand the ‘why’.
Are the drawing tools in the Drambo windows not doing the same thing as the Vector program?
Well, @CracklePot ... I could not tell before because it wasn’t something I thought about but occasionally I like to do stuff that I find fascinating (even if it is only the technical aspect). Ask @rs2000 - it was his brain that threw this idea out 💡
What I can say is that I now, after doing this, and chatting with him for a long time we have even more ideas...
Indeed, using a vector drawing program wouldn't do much more than provide a more precise means of drawing shapes.
The point is much more what's possible with this kind of concept: More advanced tools like extracting waveforms from a (sampled, if you want) WAV file or extracting a saturation curve from a recorded guitar amp, distortion pedal, high-end valve preamp, audio transformer etc. effect that was fed with a reference signal at its input.
My ideas and DSP work combined with the #1 coding skills from @MrBlaschke, if nothing else, do sound like quite some fun 😁
@MrBlaschke @rs2000
Indeed, I was wondering if this was a proof-of-concept type of demonstration of what is possible.
It is pretty fascinating, thinking about where this could lead.
Really cool stuff. Thank you for sharing the process here.
@rs2000
You come home to me b*tch
