“Once in a Lifetime”, covered on iPhone

This song was surprisingly tricky to cover. My buddy is on lead vocals, big shoes to fill. Musically, there’s some odd timing, difficult to decipher the different synth parts, etc. As always, thanks for humoring me with a listen, hope you enjoy some aspect of it.

@AnalogCortex. Awesome job. You did a bang up job of staying true to the song and adding your personal touch.
Covering a well known song is difficult. There are your own and the listeners expectations of how it should sound and that’s some murky water.
It even sounded good on my iPad speakers. Well done.
If you haven’t already you should listen to some of @Bootsy’s covers. He’s really good too.
Oh, apps used? Is that FAC Chorus on the vocal?

Thanks for listening. Yes, it’s always tricky covering a song and walking that line between sounding like the original, but not reproducing the original note for note. I often catch myself obsessing over getting it to sound just like the original, then I have to remind myself that I don’t necessarily want it to sound exactly like the original.

Apps used were GarageBand iOS, mastered in Grand Finale. I’m honestly not sure what my buddy used on the chorus. He records his vocals at home and sends them to me for tweaking.

  • Impressive cover of one of my favourite songs - and on a phone! Such times we live in, huh?

Thanks for listening. Glad you enjoyed our interpretation. It was a fun challenge. Yes, as an early purchaser of a Tascam Portastudio back in the day, and later a Yamaha MD4 minidisc recorder , the capabilities of the little “phone” in my pocket are astounding. I mean, most iPhone users don’t care or even know about the music production capabilities. It’s really unbelievable.

  • Wow! What a great cover! I’m a harsh critic of cover songs that sound just like the original. Why bother? Fantastic interpretation!
