Some questions for Thor users

Hi guys
I have few questions regarding Props Thor.
1. First of all, anyone using it frequently ? Is it stable on your devices ? It crashed to me recently few times, and I wonder if its even worth investing any time in it.
2. I would like to use it with Gadget 2 and its midi gadget. Will audiobus work like a wrapper for both ? So if I will restore audiobuss session, will it restore Gadget 2 with the proper project and thor with specific patch ?
3. How do I do a drone sound in Thor ? Is there a way to set it so it doesnt react to note signals and just outputs oscilators to amp ?
4. Do you think Thor will be ever updated ? Did you read anything about it ? Its such a shame, it would be an absolute killer as auv3.
Thanks for any comments

  • i do not think it will ever go auv3 based on how long it hasnt been updated at all, and how fast they abandoned reason compact.

    1. I used to , but I never had a single crash (ok maybe once or twice...!). But it does worth spending a lot of time. It's great synth
    2. Both Gadget and Thor do not support state saving . Epic fail for IAA apps
    3. You may try the built in sequencer on low speed (it listens to AB midi clock,start/stop)
    4. Noone knows ,especially after the fake Reason Compact.

    Check this , 28 episodes !!!!
it really helped me a lot

    Probably not.

But I never thought they’d ever release reason as a VST.

Reason compact is an odd one. The price to unlock the synths is just crazy. It’s hardly surprising if it failed commercially.

They’ve always been a strange company and these days are more difficult to predict than ever. :-/

Reason rack plugin is fantastic though. I just wish they’d update the UI so I could actually read the labels.

    +1

Hard to say what's going on over there. They've been... Adjusting, in the last couple of years, changing CEOs and the company name and so on, but from what I can gather they've always been reactive and adaptable to market demands, even if they might be a bit slow sometimes.

There was a good video explaining their whole thing a little while back. Not short short (15 minutes I think) but engaging if you're interested:

I won't make any predictions, but I'd love to see an AUv3 Thor. I keep it installed, but then I rarely use it on iPad as it doesn't play well with others.

Hopefully Reason Compact will have them thinking about joining in, rather than trying to get everybody to do things their way. I'd love to see an AUv3 Grain!

What are Propellerheads thinking? totally lost it, way behind times.. Titanic company..
They got the skills, but wtf? Thor- epic softwaresynth- lets abandon it.Reason compact? cmon..

  • I used to love reason so much, it was really the first music program that “clicked” with me. But I stopped using it around version 4 because I started doing a lot more recording of live musicians. But I loved the sequencer back then, it was really easy to use.

I guess I just never got back into it, and I think as it grew it lost its charm as an all in one package- so many options in it now. And I loved the idea of the ssl mixer when they introduced it, but when I tried demos, I found it hard to navigate on the screen.

I have Thor, and it runs on the ipad1 that I have, which is amazing. But I don’t use it that much. I do like what they did with a touch interface.

  • @mrufino1 you should definitely re-check it now since it's available as VST on your favorite desktop DAW :)

ios is the place for Reason Studios to focus on. They dont get it. Let the boat sink

The players in Reason are really great. So many good ones have come out in the recent times.

It's my favorite software on the Mac. However, the most exciting things are happening on ios, to me at least.

Top five synth for me Clive. In a way too good.

I’m good now, too many options already with logic, other au’s I have, and ios. I mainly do live sound, live recording and mixing, so reason doesn’t really fill any need right now.

I use Thor very often - I think it’s one of the most versatile sounding synths on iOS, and I love that It comes with lots of great presets (plus there are a few free packs online too - including a great pack by Jacob Haq)

I don’t think Thor has ever crashed on me! I love the keyboard in Thor - and it sends midi out. Or it can receive midi too (from gadget Taipei like you desire)

Last update was April 2018. Abelton Link would be nice - as would AUv3. I doubt it will happen. But still a great synth that’s worthy.

(Wanted to add: as much as I love about Thor - the built in sequencer is one of my least favourites - I never use it)

Hey, I’m not in the mood to agree with you here!
Propellerheads Thor was last updated for two years ago, but, on my new 2020 iPad Pro 12.9" it is running and sounding just perfect!
So, if it ain’t gonna add features it’s not in need for update - it was a supergreat synth to iPad when it was released, and STILL IS!

This also concerning Reason Mobile - it was updated for seven month, and then this was the 12th update in 15 month - pretty clear that this isn’t abandon...

Propellerheads is a legendary music software company, and, it will survive and give us more wonderful software in the future, both on mobile devices and on desktop system... Hold on!

i mean they did minor updates to compact for stability which is a good sign but as far as features, it’s basically the same as it started and max of 8 bar loops/one instance of each synth per project is really useless for any kind of song creating other than small jams. i want it to grow but groovebox is light years ahead of it.

i’ll agree that thor is good and stable but really it needs auv3 coming from a legendary company you would think they’d want to appeal to their customers a bit more

  • Thor is one of very few IAA that I still keep on my iPad. I still think it's one of the highest quality sounding synths on iOS. I often use it if I just want to mess around with a single synth + 1 or 2 effects. Or if I'm building an effect chain and I'll also use it on the front.

The 3 multimode oscillators with sync and AM allows for some truly beautiful sounds before you even hit the 2 filters. The onboard delay is absolutely lovely too. A touch of modulation turns the delay into a beautiful washed out chorus.

Thor is still valuable as sound module in a hardware setup too. Not every IOS instrument needs to play well in AUM or Audiobus ecosystems.

  • edited May 2020

there is def value with some iaa apps and they actually do work fine and play well in aum and audiobus, but the good ios daws on the other hand don’t support iaa... zenbeats and ns2, so that’s the big issue for me and reason to want auv3 ...

  • I love what I heard on YouTube of Thor. But at this point would you send 21$CAD to buy a IAA synth with a extremely uncertain future?

it sounds great, i’d rather spend 300$ on a hardware version of the synth than 20$ an iaa synth because on an ipad the workflow is everything for me to be successful at finishing anything... im just a noodler that isn’t as skilled as some people that can make everything work under any circumstances

  • Thor we can only hope continues like once a year or two to get updated. It’s great. Reason desktop is insane and hugely usable for me. I love the way the drums on compact sound. If compact ever gets any love, who knows? Hope so.
