is beat maker looping as easy as this these days?
This is very simple. You need Live in case there is something you can't do in BM3 (or any other app on iOS) and it is crucial for your workflow. It is very good chance you will be able to do it in Live :-)
In case you're not missing anything important on iOS (eg. in BM3), then you don't need Live. That simple it is :-)
I know I've posted on this article but it's really cool to read my thoughts 6 months ago, and now. My view on iOS and PC hasn't changed but since the time of that post, I have bought a few PC plugins, and a lot more iOS apps.
I think it depends on your level of comfort. I still haven't dived as deep as I would into Ableton because I didn't see the need yet. That said, I do know how to use it (somewhat) for production. I feel apps like Firo4, Blocs Wave, Launchpad actually suit my needs well. I haven't even dived deep into Beatmaker 3, aside from making the Kitmaker shortcut (after a project I was working on crashed, and was never seen again...)
I feel it's pretty much up to you. What are you hoping to accomplish? There are tools in both platform that inspire. Pick the one you're most comfortable with. And it's okay to make a not so great app purchase. I bought Factory but I hardly used it. But I've learned so much over the past few months that once I finish the projects I'm working on, I'll dive into that app.
You can use controllers with BM3 to do pretty much anything, including scene changes, sample triggers, LFOs, and so on. The macro assignment feature is pretty deep.
My answer to this thread would still be Yes. iOS+Ableton makes a fantastic combo. Choosing either/or never made sense to me. And beatmaker 3 in it's current state is actually less usable than its older versions. Specially with the fact that they made midi routing less complex by simplifying what you can achieve for no reason. I really wish I had backed up the older .iPas of Bm3. Alas I did not. So for now Bm3 is in the unused pile now atleast for me. Ended up going back to Ableton + Ableton exported projects from iOS apps like patterning, gadget etc.
fwiw, Drambo does everything you might want to be able to do in BM3 and then some. I haven't opened BM3 for more than 6 months and haven't missed it at all on iOS.
And as @gonekrazy3000 stated, Ableton is a stellar app...and the fact that you get the free version of it with apps like Koala, Gadget, etc...makes it a no brainer to fit in ones workflow.
I identify with this. But I took the plunge and spent a few pounds on Midi Tools. Seems to have solved the problem, and given me some extra tools too.

No need to choose, certain tools for certain jobs / location / time frame

Whut? You can't be serious. Maybe everything you might want to be able to do in BM3, but there is no way there is parity in the overall capabilities. Drambo is great, but sorry, I just don't see how anyone can say that.
(spoken by someone who never uses BM3 any more but has used it a lot, and one who digs Drambo to the max.)

Touchable Pro
@echoopera do you find drawing in notes and copying them, moving them, etc is easier in Touchable than just doing it with a mouse? I use touchable, both pushes, and mouse and just curious what your opinion is.
I think it depends. I also have the Push2. I find Touchable Pro super convenient to use at times when i just want to do something quick in Ableton...get an idea across and I’m not around the Push2.
The workflow for the Piano Roll is like Modstep so i feel at home in it.
FWIW, just took a look at using Drambo to sequence Ableton...and this is actually a pretty nice thing as well...you get all the nice Arp, Chance, Random and Pattern modes in Drambo which makes it kind of a nice sequencer for Ableton Synths.
I am sure it would work in any other macOS DAW, I'm just accustomed to Ableton.
Yeah, same. The detailed editing is just not fast enough for me personally on the iPad. Once I need to really edit something, I find it’s too time consuming with fingers on glass. But my style of writing is that I play +80% of everything with my hands and just cleanup with other tools. The push is my favorite writing tool ever.

I can’t say enough good things about this app. It basically turns an iPad into the equivalent of a push 2, but with added features. I mixed a record with it & am using it now to create more & more music. The isomorphic keyboard with scale highlighting is so so so useful and allows you to do things other hardware controllers just can’t. It’s a huge help to me in creating music as I’m not a keyboard player & so many computer/music interfaces are geared toward keyboardists. I’ve setup my own templates to control modular softsynths with multitouch, which you can’t do with a mouse. Totally worth every cent & more."

@drez Yeah...I love the Push2. Wish we'd see a stand alone version of it...something like the MPC One...that works great stand alone, and is fully unlocked once connected to Ableton.

thanks, I don't think anything will ever replace live for me but if bm3 can loop like that without ruining my mood it's worth firing it up again and going back in
Psssst....for a consistent and constant mood elevation, just use Drambo

So Drambo replaces BM3 and Live now too, never would have guessed, oh the shock!!!
That's been pretty widely discredited. But it does lower my blood sugar and has almost completely removed my belly fat.
