Zenbeats is pretty good!

I downloaded it with the free unlock. I tested it out a few months ago but wasn't impressed off the bat. Been using it every day for like a week and a half and really enjoying the workflow. I'm also impressed with the drum machine and the built in synths. That shouldn't be too surprising since Roland has made and still makes some of the best drum machines and synths of all time. I usually use mostly plug in instruments that I've aquired but now I'm mostly using their drum machine for beats and I've started using some of the synths just because there are some nice sounding presets. There is nothing ground breaking compared to other DAWs I've used over the years but it's a lot deeper than I first thought especially in the drum sequencing. The only things that I would really like to see added is being able to returns so I can route a send into another send and some more advanced drum sequencing like p locks and randomnesses but I'm happy with what it is right now. And they have some great interactive tutorials in the app which I just discovered today.

    +1

If they could make it IAA at least,
it would be brilliant but as a
    standalone groovebox with Auv3's?

    It's solid.

I just use it in the timeline view like a traditional DAW. I'm not recording, just using midi instruments and loops that I made in Groovebox. Arrangement and mixing is much better than BM3. I would say it's as good as NS2 but Zen supports audio files and NS2 has more flexible routing

  • I would like it better if I could use the instruments in other daws.

  • There is definitely a little swell in the Zenbeat waters by those out and about in it these days...

  • If it gets AU automation via the AU ui before the next NS2 update I will be sure to check it out again

I was about to get NS2 then Drambo came out.

Zenbeats needs to improve the way it organises files.

BM3 has a really good filing structure.
Being able to have folders nested
within folders is a godsend for sampler's.

As I’ve stated in other posts, I was using NS2 mostly. Then I gave Zenbeats a try figuring I could use both of them. Then I thought, why bother with NS2 at all when the majority of what I want to do is in ZB?

For me the main thing NS2 has over ZB is Obsidian. Otherwise, ZB has a good piano roll, audio tracks, a decent set of onboard instruments, plays well with most of my AU’s and I can automate both AUv3 and AUfx by painting into the timeline which I find a little more flexible than trying to turn knobs on the touchscreen.

ZB Sampleverse is kind of a strange layout but after spending some time with it I found it pretty easy to use.

ZB needs some tweaks like sub-folders for samples, work on sends and sub-tracks, stability in some areas - I’ve had freezes when getting crazy with automation, and the AU scanning issue.

I use it in linear mode because my brain works better that way but it also has a pretty good loop mode.

Overall, though I find it quite a bit more than I thought it was!

They mentioned adding audio editing capability and that would be great, especially trimming, normalizing, DC offset correction, fade in/out, crossfade looping for Sampleverse, maybe slicing?

I’ve just had a bit of a faff with Zenbeats. I had used it on my pc when it was released and then forgot about it. I saw this thread and thought I’d give it a try on my iPad.

After installing it, a message popped up asking if I wanted to restore my purchases? I could vaguely remember something, so I said yes and then it asked if I wanted to turn on auto-download? I said yes and then it whisked me straight to the Store page, where there were 2 options to ‘restore’. A free one and a 150 Store Points one. Nothing else on the page, no other information, just those 2 options. I thought I’d earned some points by taking tutorials on my pc so I thought “hmm, there’s only 2 options so I must have 150 points, clicked buy on the cart and PING! A notification popped up from my bank, telling me that I had just spent £150 on Zenbeats Store Points.

I’ve just been on the phone with Apple, getting my money back, which they did. I like Apple. Not too enamoured with Roland Zenbeats though.

Why does Zenbeats have its own currency? I mean, I know it won’t be so that people have no idea how much they’re spending. That would be such a terrible business practice. A really cheap, shitty thing to do to its customers, so it can’t be that.

When it shows a certain number of points it means it’s going to cost you something. When you go forward (such as purchasing a preset pack) it takes you through the normal App Store purchase process including showing the cost of the purchase in your local currency. There are no surprises.

  • Let’s not forget that this is now a Roland product .......and we are yet to see what they bring to Zen...

Just saying.. it may be good things coming our way..

  • MIDI files created in Xequence 2 can be exported as MIDI Type 1. BM3 only imports Type 0. Now it appears that Zenbeats doesn’t import Type 1 either. I hope Zenbeats inability to import Type 1 gets fixed in the next release. CREATING MIDI in Zenbeats is clumsy. As far as I’m concerned Xequence has become the most full-featured MIDI editor, so until the Type 1 / Type 0 problem is fixed it’s necessary to use another app to convert before you can import Xeq MIDI into Zenbeats.

It's nothing nefarious. Purchases are cross-platform and the App Store doesn't have any mechanism to manage that in such a way that you can still make use of your purchases on other platforms. It's their way of managing the multiple ways the packs can be purchased across platforms.

That's a valid complaint. The other thing is that I've found no detailed list of the features you unlock with each level. Surely it must exist somewhere, but I never found it.

Scroll down a bit and there's a table.

    It's really quite simple:

    • Free: limited features
    • Unlock: all features unlocked. Some sound packs included, the rest are IAP.
    • Ultimate: all platforms (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android) unlocked. All IAP packs included.

How are you trying to import? For multichannel MIDI files you have to be in linear mode. Then tap on the hamburger on upper left and choose Song > Import > Import MIDI File. You can then copy and paste individual tracks to clip mode. MIDI import is one of the things they are working on. I haven't looked into it too much because I don't use them.

Agreed that a hierarchical folder layout would be nice. However, it does let you organize your samples in folders, and you can filter by folders. Last night I dragged a folder in place with the files app. I was disappointed to see that all the files were displayed in one long list. However, I noticed that the folder paths were noted. That led me to the drop-down box and I found that I could filter by folder name. The full tree was there. So, once I got used to that, it was easy as pie to find samples.

Not the best substitute for what we're used to, but in practice just as workable now that I know how.

I've requested attack and decay automation and probability to the Drum Machine. They responded that they liked those ideas so hopefully they will get implemented at some point. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! :D

All the loop sets and preset collections are 4 points. If you go through the motions of buying them the price in local currency will come up. 4 points is $3.99 US. You have to go through several steps before any purchase is final.

Anyway, I got my money back from Apple.
