BentFM lite is freeware and makes cool noises

  • I actually started my music production learning journey on iPad several years ago, when even gadget was a bit overwhelming at first. It was apps like Figure, Beatonal - and a little later, Ampify Groovebox that eased me into it and gave me solid footing to slowly graduate to more advanced environments.

is he musician ? does he music on desktop ?

I would suggest first answer those 2 question and only then decide which app will best for him as "introductory drug"

He has no real experience using music apps on his phone or computer, but is a fan of music and has some understanding of music from years of playing double bass.

I find it hard to recommend anything to somebody I don't know at all.
Koala is nice but for introducing him into making music on iOS I'd rather give him Triqtraq or even the free LE version - it can sample, it has a pitch keyboard, it has an easy to use sequencer and a few nice FX.
It also plays well with other musicians' iDevices (Ableton Link) and can export song stems in case he does some cool stuff with it.

  • Get him started understanding that these apps all work together and can record a file with AUM. Then give him some files that are missing something he could add to and send back.

iPad and iPhone are DIY assembly environments.

On second thought this might not fit your category, but you can mess with any audio.

  • Phone worthy and simple

    Thumbjam

  • Also strange attractor

  • Thanks All,
His birthday is today and I sent him the following apps to get started with...

    • Koala (he has seen me use this one and enjoyed messing around with my 404sx so thought it was a safe bet for the price).
    • Fractal Bits for the quick and easy sample fodder
    • KQ Unotone for some simple synth exploring

If he digs these then I will get him started down the road of AUM, audiobus, etc...

Thanks again for all the suggestions. Some cool apps on here that I didn’t have that I will probably pick up.

Will report back on how he makes out with the first three.

Thank you, that one is very close to the kind of noise making he (and I) like. Not sure you can gift free apps, but will pass it along to him.

Yeah, Triqtraq is great, but I find it a bit more limiting with the single sample per step limitation. Ah, now I want to go play with all my old apps.

The constant release of new apps really causes me to forget about some of the old ones I used to love. That said, between gifting him apps and buying many of the ones mentioned here, it has been an expensive day... and then sEgments will be out ;)

True, well, at least it has 4 tracks that can sound simultaneously.

Everyone here sure knows what you're talking about 😁

@DYMS : werkbench https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/werkbench/id522262614 is utterly awesome and beginner friendly for making great sample mangled patterns, easy to explore and understand by doing.

And suggest the essential iPad screen record/AudioStretch/AudioShare https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/audioshare/id543859300 combo trick:

The AudioStretch Lite version is free, but it really comes into its own for PaulStretch style massive sample speed and pitch variation in its paid version https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/audiostretch/id571863178.

With this he can easily create and mess with wavs from any source he can display on the pad, and turn them into useable loops.

AudioStretch is marketed solely for guitarists as a way to capture and slow down licks for practise purposes but it’s huge speed and pitch shifting capabilities, and ability to automatically strip the audio from any video, including the iPad screen record, make it so much more than that, and a way to rescue sounds from old ‘musical toy’ apps like Dr Om https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/dr-om/id555409573 and Bliptronic https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/bliptronic/id1298627171 which otherwise have no connectivity, for use in environments like AUM.

And talking of loops - as he is a musician, he might want to throw an actual looper into the mix. I’m not expert in these, but there are obviously a lot of choices out there right now.

(I was going to suggest Giant Isopod as a source for sample fodder but I just discovered it’s gone from the store. Given Apple’s evil policy of not allowing local backups of apps any more, that means my copy of Giant Isopod is another zombie app that despite me having paid for it will only live as long as this iPad does. A very annoying thing!]

  • Great suggestions here, but remember
MOOG Model D while it’s still FREE

  • +1 for werkbench
@DYMS bent.fm had a paid version too (I have it) . Strangely there isn’t anymore on the Store.
Since you like noise you may check BitWiz .
But I insist on Caustic . The 8bit synth will make nice noises , the fm can go crazy and the vocoder is nice too . Plus there are many video tutorials.
