Trolling Hainbach is like clubbing a fur seal. It’s just wrong.
During This Lockdown Hell (TM) he did the great Isolation Loops soundpack giveaway which gave this health-vulnerable solo-living self-isolator a fun creative spur to produce a track and do something positive with the time. I find my regular check ins with that dark brown voice welcoming me back to an always fascinating and clearly passion driven musical exploration of some ancient lab equipment or ridiculous boutique effect pedal one of the calmer and friendlier harbours on the choppy 2020 seas of t’internet. Despite some initial issues, his co authored app Fundamental is now one of my go-tos, and I’ll be instabuying his Brambos collab when it drops. I’d love the VST too, but I’m all spent out...
I don’t love all of his music, (though I do like quite a lot of it, mind) but I always find his attitude towards composition itself, and his openness in discussing and showing it, incredibly inspiring for my own very different noise obsessions.
Hainbach is a bright spot in a dark world. And trolls are... well, just so 2020, I guess. They are why we can’t have nice things.
Ahh, yes please.
Yes, you’re absolutely right. It’s like saying that women should stop looking good to stop rape. I’m absolutely with you on that.
I guess what I was trying to say is that if I was a famous person I would not reveal my true identity because fame fucks with human brain. It is psychologically speaking a very charged and complex state. It does so to the supposed ‘onlooker’ as well as the ‘limelight’ person themselves and I’m sure Mr Hainbach is aware of that. I was talking strategy as opposed to justification.
Sorry, my comment was insensitive.

I get you bro, no worries.
And @Svetlovska beautifully put. A lot of love in that post. Folks, Hainbach is a music nerd, like most everyone here. Be nice. Doesn't matter whether the hell you like his music or not. He's does good stuff for music education, informs us about lovely vintage gear, and he seems like a really decent person. He is - or was - a forum member. If a forum member posted a track you didn't like you wouldn't shit all over it. And you certainly wouldn't start criticising how they look. Doesn't matter whether he's famous or not. Respect.
Yep he seems like a nice person. But if you are going to run and cry when you see a cockroach you probably shouldn't go into the forest.

@Ailerom : I think it’s our loss, not his. As his eloquent Hate Loops demonstrates he is used to dealing with and in fact rising above negativity in the best way. For a short time we here and the IOS sound making community benefited from direct dialogue in the forum with a co-developer of interesting off-piste apps who has expressed interest in IOS as a platform. His engagement here with the initial issues in Fundamental was an example of the positive benefits that could flow from such engagement.
This was, briefly, probably the best space to get to influence and encourage more development In that direction, and we do have the Brambos collab to look forward to, but the profit margins and potential market on VSTs Is clearly bigger, so you’ve got to think: how likely is this recent experience to encourage Hainbach to keep developing IOS specific apps, when he can just avoid the toxicity that was shown to him here and focus on the vastly bigger VST marketplace instead? I’m sorry he’s gone, but sorrier still to think what this spat might have cost us in missed opportunities in the future.
Hainbach will be fine, what worries me is that the recent cheap shot at him seems to have backfired on the likelihood of us getting more toys from him to play with.
+1
Agree wholeheartedly. But coming across dickheads on an internet forum is unavoidable so I can't imagine why that would be a surprise, or send him away.
I just talked to him. He loves iOS as much as we all do. Don't worry, whether he comes back or not I'm sure he'll make more apps.
Here’s from Jesus himself

Haha, good old Russell
Russell Brand is a little tiny but less likeable to me since he took on the guru role. I still think he has a lot of good things to say. People often think he's less smart than he is because of his look and his accent. They should watch this. He's razor sharp!
First time I saw a Hainbach video was a device that recorded electromagnetic sounds (?) - I remember he pointed the thing to a flying airplane, to some kind of light bulb and other electronics devices and they made sound!!! I was mesmerised by his knowledge and by his presence.
Then there was the hatred tapes. I thought: this guy is strong, respect! Since then I have a warm feeling running down my spine every time I hear his "Hello, I'm Hainbach, glad to have you back".
I think whether Hainbach stays here or not, is up to him but it was a good thing to put this thread up to show our love.

I don’t think that’s true actually. IOS market is a lot larger which is why VSTs cost a lot more.
The correlation between market size and price is not as direct as you think. The reason iOS apps are so cheap has a lot to do with what the market will bear and the App Store psychology (which has led to a sort of race for the bottom devs are trying to overcome)...many developers find that those prices don’t allow them to be profitable. Some larger developers don’t turn much or any profit on their iOS offerings but keep their the in the game so that they will be ready IF it turns profitable or because they feel it benefits their desktop customers’ loyalty and likelihood to stay in their ecosystem.
Some developers (not all), have said that they sell more units on iOS than on desktop but the prices are so low that they essentially provide no support and are less responsive to the iOS customers because the low prices don’t generate the revenue to justify having adequate support people.
Desktop plugin sales are more profitable generally speaking than iOS plugins which is why many devs haven’t shown an interest in iOS. The customers that spend the most money are still tethered to their studios (for good reason).
P.s. I’m a former dev.
I spoke to one niche dev who told me how much he earned from the first few days of app sales after a new release and it was shockingly low. I think apps should really be double the price they are, in general.
I was gonna say this on you tube but there was not a single criticism or dislike of 'wires'.
Its totally mediocre and actually kinda makes every sound umm bad/ aka lo fi (which I get that idea and use occasionally). I just needed to blab and feel better.
Ok, so yea to me it sounds kinda like all the lo fi stuff vst and pedal trends, and while neat I want to yak when people are like tripping over lo fi tape hiss. I just tire of that lo fi thing now, I think that's what's irked me. Like one more acoustic guitar loop with low fi or half speed and I will die! ha Ok I feel better also knowing that I won't get Hainbach bombed on the tube. Cheers and good vibes I love fundamental!
I’m basing this on a couple of conversations I’ve had with developers over the years, but I didn’t get the impression that the desktop market was particularly healthy either. The Audio Damage developer has stated that profits from IOS are comparable to the other platforms he supports.
Of audio vsts?
Not VSTs but was involved with a number companies doing music software development; friends and colleagues have done plugin development.
Desktop is tough but nothing near as tough as iOS. When Logic’s price dropped in the early aughts it made earning a living a lot tougher.
Re AudioDamage:
- It may be true for him. It is true for some and not others.
Well some of the desktop market is aimed at studio engineers. Which is a different market to the IOS one (or the Audio Damage market). Waves charge professional prices to people who charge for their services.
But Chris Randall stated that while he sells his plugins for a tenth of the price on IOS, he also sells about ten times as many of them. And the flip side of that is that I would guess that for many types of plugin desktop is pretty saturated at this point. I would think an indie developer making a synth plugin, or a compressor, would have a tough time standing out from the competition at this point. That's not true on IOS - the market is a lot less crowded.
I think Wires sounds nice, but I love old number station recordings.
I wouldn't use Wires much, but I like the idea of being able to make snippets of speech sound like an old number station/spy type recording. For that reason, I'd really like it on iOS. I could easily spend a few hours on the sofa whilst the Misses watches something on TV making samples for future use. And for the sofa, I need iOS :-) Plus it doesn't hurt that iOS plugins are cheaper :-)
I've been trying the demo and i quite like the echo too. I'm a sucker for tape delays. Again, it's not a delay I'd use on everything, but I like having these kind of plug-ins for specific situations.
It's Niche.
But niche is good. I've got more bread and butter type stuff than I could ever use already.
‘You have hair like Princess Diana....when she was alive, I wasn’t being offensive’. Classic.
Who is Hainbach? What was his handle in this forum?
Hainbach is a youtuber that uses old test equipment, tape recorders, and a bunch of other unique equipment to make ambient lofi stuff. He has a lot of good tips and stuff on his youtube channel too. Recently he’s been partnering with developers to make VSTs and iOS apps such as Fundamental and Wires. And his username on the forum is Hainbach.
Edit: He also writes and composes scores for plays too. And some film.
This thread has, in a weird way, elevated Hainbach's profile. I never really knew he made records, and now I'm listening to his music. ("Songs for Coco" is quite interesting and moving.)
I mean, he kind of joined the forum only when he had a product to sell. Which is totally fine, and it does not excuse personal attacks. But he was never going to shoot the shit and gently correct you on the fool's errand of trying to drive DM2 with Gadget. He was as ephemeral as a cicada, as mercurial as a giant squid. He was a rumor, alas, and now he is gone.
I know what you mean! (I actually don't
)
But now he's gone
Hope this forum doesn't get too toxic... ...looked at the US election thread today: OMG
Ohh yeah that thread was rough lol
Its really friendly most of the time. But sometimes a tad toxic too. Mainly how people approach developers, refunds and whatnot. Need more empathy sometimes.
