drum app to jam to?
After much investigation I realize I get no sound from any IAA app using Bremmers Multitrack Studio. Not one of them works, but their AU counterparts do make sound. So now I know the Lumbeats apps won't work.
So please help me find an easy to use drum machine app, preferably acoustic drums (brushes if possible, most likely not I'm guessing). I want to use it for jamming and practice so built-in drum patterns are important. Ease of use, stabilty, drum patterns.
Thanks!

Did you make sure background audio is turned on for your IAA apps?
I will do that now! Thanks for the advice, I'm new to iOS and mostly confused.
There’s always GarageBand. Loads of drum options there.
DigiStix and GR-16
I didn't find any option to turn on background audio either in the Lumbeat app, in Multitrack Studio or in iOS settings. Any ideas?
I will check out DigiStix now, thanks!

It looks like Lumbeats apps don't need a background audio switch because it is always on. I don't have MTS, but the Lumbeats drummer apps work with every IAA host I have tried on iOS 13.7. Is the problem that they don't start when you press play in the host or that even if you manually start them, no audio is heard?
Have you contacted the MTS developer?
Thanks for your reply. The Soft Drummer app has worked for me in AUM and Audio Evolution Mobile. I am looking for the DAW I can get along with, MTS seems like the best fit for me except for this little hiccup. The Soft Drummer app plays fine in other hosts and stand alone. It just won't make any noise or advance through the pattern if I have MTS open. The big arrow in Soft Drummer pulses along with the MTS tempo, though.
I will try contacting Mr. Bremmers, the manual for MTS is not very thorough. I still think it must be my fault as I can't get a single IAA app to make sounds in MTS.
Man, trying to make iOS music is so difficult. I feel like I'm working with ReWire and ASIO drivers again, trying to get stuff synced up like it's 1999. MTS is my last attempt before I throw in the towel.
Digistix has some decent factory sounds, and option to randomly create a pattern. Check settings first though
Ok thanks!
I'm also going to look into Drum Computer. It's not acoustic drums, but it looks like it also has lots of pattern randomization options and it is AU.
You can also look into Audiokit's 909. Plenty of factory patterns to jam to.
Great, thank you, I will do that!
I appreciate all the help, I am going to find something good.
Do you have the Audiobus app? Have you tried using it with your IAA apps? If not, that's worth a try. Sometimes the order in which apps are launched makes a difference, too.
Check out DrumPerfect Pro. - https://apps.apple.com/app/id1032935528
Ease of use might be an issue if you're looking to jump right in and not learn the app, but the documentation is pretty good. Find that here - http://www.drumperfect.nl/drumperfect_manual_v3_0.pdf.html
GarageBand. The drummer is great for jamming along to and can follow what you play. There are lots of options for different styles and you can change easily change the complexity and style of what’s played, how many fills, which drums are used (ie choose whether or not you want toms) etc.
There are lots of additional ‘drummers’ to download too.
And GB is free.
Today I continue my search. I had not heard of Drum Perfect, I'll check it out in the Sound Test Room videos. (What a wonderful YouTube channel!) I thank you all for your great suggestions.
Lots of great suggestions here but I’ll just add that I too occasionally look for exactly this sort of app as an AUv3 and still haven’t found anything.
For just jamming in the living room (fancy metronome style), I usually turn to GarageBand or FunkBox.
Thanks, syrupcore. I'll check out Funkbox.
I see that the drums in Garageband are pretty much what I'm looking for, but I don't enjoy using Garageband, I tried it again and I just don't like the UI.
So besides trying out Funkbox, I've narrowed it down to either Drum Perfect or, unusually, Drum Computer. Drum Perfect looks close to what I'd like but waaaaay too deep and I'm unclear on what functionality is in the AU version. I can't get a simple answer about that. I saw a video showing a middle step involved in getting a pattern to play in the AU version. It looked like a headache but I'm unclear on whether or not this is an issue with the newest version of Drum Perfect, v3 I think. There might be just too many features I would never use, and the app is confusing to me.
Drum Computer contains a lot of electronic sounds, very far from the brush kit I was hoping for, but I could at least synthesize something nice to play to and learn a little about drum synthesis. The pattern randomizations look appealing and I can understand the app overall just from watching a few videos.
There are some strange missing pieces with iOS music creating. It's quite confusing but I persist. Funkbox is next up.
Been down this road tried so many apps definitely GR16 is the most flexible, customisable and usable for me
@abf Maybe just using a collection of nice drum loops (especially if you're looking for a brushed kit) would be the easiest way?
Or export a few loops from Garageband and load them in MTS?
I'm using KORG Gadget with Stockholm and REX drum loops because they combine the ease of use of loops with the flexibility of a drum kit to place hits anywhere in the drum pattern while leaving the groove timing intact but I know that REX loops are not for everyone...
@abf Not an obvious choice but take a look at already mentioned Drumjam. It does have two IAPs with brushes and despite and outdated UI it is so easy to randomize and tweak drum patterns in this app.
Drumjam looks like a lot of fun!
Has anybody got it running on OS 14.4?
EDIT: from Drumjam:
"DrumJam is updated to 1.4 to fix issues with iOS 14, optimized for all screen sizes, and fixed IAA and Audiobus issues. It’s still alive!"
I think I'll get this one tomorrow. If I can't get it synced up, I can make a lot of loops with it.
All these suggestions are fantastic, thank you.
Just for completeness, here is a great video from Pete Johns on how GB kick/snare follows recorded audio tracks like recorded live bass. Haven't tried it, but seems interesting. It can't be done on a live signal, must be recorded. (Of course, recorded MIDI tracks work too).
