Lol. That's not all that big...
Interesting. Mine seems to be about 9 inches or so, rough measurement based on the size of my iPad (don't have a measuring stick handy).
A quick search turned up some useful links:
study on pianists' hand spans shows males ranging from 7.7" - 10.2"
Canadian census at schools puts an average 19 year-old male's hand span at about 8"
this histogram puts male hand span at 7"-11" with average between 8.5" and 9.5"
So 9.5" seems on the larger side, though still perhaps at the upper edge of "average"
And of course, womens' averages are about 1-1.5" lower.
Which ultimately means that very few women will be able to use both secondary chords buttons, but maybe 30% of men will be able to do so, in upright mode
That's what she said..

@commonstookie I'm sorry to hear that...
I lost 1cm from the tip of my left index finger in a building site accident 6 yrs ago. It was sliced off by the hinge of a heavy manhole cover...at the time all I screamed was "My guitar finger!! I've lost my guitar finger!" haha
I was lucky to miss the bone by 1mm.
If it had happened yesterday I'm sure my first words would have been a scream of "My iOS music app finger!! I've lost my iOS music app finger!"
Excuse you, it's no longer called a manhole. It's a personhole now. Lol
Gotsta be PC ...ha
Persynhole, actually.
^^ haha PC crazy!
My Guitarism span could really do with that extra 1cm!
Yes, I have pretty small hands for a guy. (Just measured my span at roughly 8"). It's ok though, I make up for it in other areas. For example I have an unusually long... pony-tail.
Of course this is why I love Guitarism, because certain chords on a real guitar are extremely difficult for me.
@Rhism why disable strumming in "wide lock"? If people don't like how it sounds.. they simply won't strum! Or you could "strum" slowly for an arpeggio effect. It just seems like disabling strumming would be "surprise behaviour" that users wouldn't intuitively expect, and could have valid uses still.
Agreed with your points re: roman chord numbers. To alleviate those, I would suggest: 1) make it a menu option (defaulted to off), to keep the default interface uncluttered, and 2) only include the numbers for the 6 default chords for your keys, don't worry about secondary/custom chords. If people are using those, they probably don't need such training wheels anyway. I love how your app provides common chord progression suggestions when you select a key... this seems like it would be a natural extension of that, allowing people to more easily recognize nice sounding progressions in a key-independent way.
And since I've got your ear, I'm going to push my luck and try one more suggestion... I saw a video of Jordan Rudess demoing some guitar app (Wi Guitar?), and the tone changed depending on where you strummed... ie, a brighter tone if you strummed further to the right. This would allow for even more expressive strumming (not sure how that would work for MIDI out, but it could be great with the fantastic built-in sound engine).
Thanks again for such a wonderful app, and also for how responsive you've been on these forums.
@Morwynd Indeed, I don't want to get into a situation where strumming sounds bad, and I don't want to have to disable it as it would be unexpected behavior, so this is why there is no "wide lock" mode Do you feel that you would want to strum in a "wide lock" mode? Note that it's nearly impossible to strum slowly with a predictable tempo as the touchscreen is not really amenable to this. So if you want an arpeggio you'd really need to tap your way through it (using one or multiple fingers).
Guitarism does change its tone slightly depending on where you strum - brighter to the right. It's a very subtle effect so not something people notice explicitly, but it's there.
