    32 or 64?

  • I'd like to use a big screen to rearrange all of my app icons.

  • A second screen for alternate views would be cool. Since it uses a wii type controller anything other than TC-11/Orphion style "just explore this preset with no wrong notes" style music making seems difficult at best. But, having something like Auria or Nanostudio show the mixer when you're in the timeline (and the timeline when in the mixer) would be boss. Meaning, as extra information view, I'd love it. As an interaction point (beyond eyeballs), I'm skeptical. Surely Patrick and those like him will creatively conspire change my limited mind. :)

Generative music makers could be cool too. Something to go along with your photo slideshow screen saver.

  • I got mine today, I expect to have something interesting going, perhaps a version of one of the *-Jam apps will appear :)

Unfortunately the remote does not have a fully functional gyro, only accelerometer stuff is populated at runtime, so no azimuth pointing. It would have been useful, but all the tilt and shake will still work.

As for second screen of an iPad/iPhone apps, that has been possible for years on the conventional AppleTV or external Vga/hdmi displays, just not very popular in audio apps. TonalEnergy Tuner has that capability, BTW.

How does TonalEnergy Tuner utilize the second screen?

It provides a dedicated tuner display and/or spectral/waveform plot... so the operator can do other things in the app (tone generator or metronome controls). It was made for educators use (projecting the second screen, for instance), but I honestly don't know how often the feature is used.

I went with 64. I have absolutely no idea what I'll need the space for, but I figured for the money, go ahead and avoid having to regret buying the smaller one. Next semester, I'll be teaching a course on game development (my day job is as a university professor); there are a few music ideas I've got for the TV, but I expect there will be more fun happening with games.

Sounds like we already have an iOS visualizer then!

TE tuner (without all the samples, I guess) would be a handy app on the TV, presuming it has a built in microphone. Lots of folks play their acoustic instruments in the living room and everyone needs a tuner.

  • I'm a little ticked that I can't Apple Music on the ATV 3rd gen. Not enough to immediately buy a 4th gen. Waiting to see what the dev said come up with.

At this point, it's classic Apple horseshit. Always some software feature only available to the new hardware version of device X. There's no reason, for instance, that a device without force touch can't have access to homescreen icon menus via long press (one of those menu options could be 'delete/rearrange')

Nope, the mic in the remote is for Siri only, no dev access. AppleTV is output only. Maybe one day they'll open up that usb-c port for external devices but I doubt it!

I do wonder if Bluetooth headsets might work for input, will have to check.

  • It will be cool to see what new apps are developed by the end of next year. I'm going to pick up a 64 GB for my family this Christmas.

Here's a little first taste of DrumJam on it.... pretty fun, probably worth pursuing. ThumbJam should work this way too (plus tilt and shake), possibly combined into a hybrid app... we'll see. The touch on the remote is deceptive, it only allows relative dragging around, the initial tap absolute position isn't given, which is too bad... but still works OK in practice for something like this.

  • Ha that's wild!

  • I have to say, it’s the first Apple product I have ever absolutely hated, despised, and feel thoroughly offended that they even sell it, openly, with no warning of how utterly utterly utterly useless it is.

I refuse to use the line of letters, it’s an inadequate and wholly incorrect way of doing things. Consequently all it can offer is a look at expensive films and pointless video games, neither of which I’m interested in at all. There’s about eight apps that aren’t idiotic video games or stupid american television things of no interest at all to anyone else, and fortunately I’ve already got two of those handful of available apps (youtube and TED) from getting them for the iPad so that’s about all it’s been used for so far. There’s not even a weather app. At least, not one that I don’t have to tediously and slowly and inaccurately and out-in-the-open-visibly put in my password for, which will never happen.

This thing is worse than useless.

I feel somekind of vj effect controlled by apple remote or apple watch could be total winner IMHO. About the limit of apps it should not be a problem if you are using it as av fx unit airplaying from iOS device... @sonosaurus what do you think about it?
