Your favorite iPhone synths?
I mostly use Sunrizer XS, iKaossilator, and Figure on the iphone, but I'd like to try some newer dedicated synths lately. Alchemy is great, but a storage hog. Preferably with an arp or built in sequencer so I can make melodies on the go.
Any recommendations?
Comments
I have been concentrating on iPhone lately. Animoog and iFretless work great.
Would be interested to hear from others about which music apps, not just synths, work well on the iPhone too.
AFAIK, iPhone versions of Cassini, Magellan and NLog have an arp
Also check Xynthesizr - it's a quite nice sequencer/synthesizer combo
Caustic and Nanostudio have built-in synths and nice sequencers to play with.
I'm a big fan of Mitosynth. Doesn't have an arp, but with the wave chamber and all the modulation options you can get quite a variety of stuff going. It also has a bare bones built in recorder to capture audio, and then you can even dump that audio back into the wave chamber if you want.
Another one:
dot Melody
Has a limited number of tracks (drum, lead, bass) and just a handful of sounds, but has midi out and the ability to save multiple patterns in song mode, so could be used as a sketch pad of sorts.
Xynthesizr running into Mitosynth
I like Animoog, Cassini and Nlog the most but only the latter 2 have arps. There's Arpeggionome for iPhone which can be used as a controller as well as Xynthesizr which is an awesome app on its own but can be used as a sequencer. Other apps with arps or seequencers worth mentioning are Magellan Jr, Modular, Argon and DXi.
Thanks everyone! I forgot I have Cassini too, doh.
Magellan Jr has a nice arp and sequencer built in. I had trouble with the timing on Cassini when I tried to record an arp sequence with with BM2. For thick pads I like GrainScience and Mitosynth, both from Wooji Juice, I layered them up and played chords with Fiddlewax to make some big pads/soundscapes.
My Top 5: Mitosynth, Eden (NanoStudio), Grain Science, Animoog, Addictive Micro
Another one I've just re-found is PPG Minimapper. Not sure exactly how it works yet, but it has an arp and it's kind of fun hearing what sounds come out of it as you slide the tiles around
I have moved to exclusive use of my iPhone 6 Plus (and an external desktop computer for additional audio work). While there are not as many options as an iPad, you will be surprised at how much is actually available.
For making melodies on the go, there are lots and lots and lots of options! :-)
I have only scratched the surface of the apps I have for the iPhone--there are LOTS of available apps! In Addition to Caustic or Figure, there's also Spire, Loopy HD, or MultiTrack DAW that would be useful for you.
Consider playing your ARPs or Sequences live into Loopy HD or AudioShare to get audio loops and then comping them with MultiTrack DAW. :-)
If it were me, and I was limited to a small amount of space on my iPhone, I would consider the following tools, synths and apps because of their usefulness and small size:
MusicStudio (DAW, Audio and Midi--I wasn't going to put this on because it is LARGE, but it is a complete working DAW that works fine with iOS 9.0.2, so I kept it)
Audiobus
Guitarism (Larger in size, but unique for its guitar strumming)
AUFX: Space
Remember, there are a LOT more options available that are great!! :-) I hope this helps! :-)
Thanks very much for such a detailed reply! Some good options there I hadn't considered or had forgotten about. I think right now I'm trying to get away from using multiple apps or audiobus chains, mostly trying to keep it focused on just one synth app so I don't get distracted.
Mainly the idea is to come up with a sound a melody on it's own, that I can expand on later in the studio or while jamming with other people using my Qunexus.
Brilliant @Audiojunkie, that's a great list to work through. SunVox works pretty well on iPhone, on iOS 9 too. The only thing that I'm missing, as I mentioned in another thread, is a mastering app but that's not a deal breaker
Yeah, mastering is the current weak point. I'm waiting for something to come along. In the meantime, I'm using a desktop with Reaper for any final work I do. :-)
Interesting! That's almost exactly how I'm trying to do things. I'm using my iPhone as a sort of sketch pad for ideas.... I work out the melody and the basic skeleton of the song, and flesh it out on the desktop. :-)
I love ZedSynth, AniMoog, Sunrizer XS (I really wish the dev would update the ui to be consistent and nicer looking like the iPad and vst/au versions along with the preset compatibility with all the fancy extra effects, but still a great synth anyway!), Stria, iPulserat, MitoSynth, Caustic, SunVox, NanaLoop, iElectribe, Elastic Drums. and xynthesizr.
Or all by itself. Xynthesizer's synth sounds pretty great.
+1 at Argon. Also a deceptively great synth. No arpeggiator (I think) but it does have a little looper.
Addictive Micro has lots of interesting sonic possibilities, has both a deep arpeggiator and a four track loop recorder. The loop recorder has a something like ann 8-10 second max length but it's pretty handy.
NLogMIDI also has a little recorder. I find it difficult/unintuitive to navigate on the iPhone but it's a very very deep synth for sure.
Judging from some of your music I've heard, I think you might have a good time with NanoLoop. Not at all a full on synth but a sort of grid/synth/sampler hybrid. Works brilliantly on the iPhone.
I vote Magellan Jr., Yonac MiniSynth (if only because I got it for free today), Animoog, and Mitosynth.
Excellent, lots of good idea to explore today, thanks everyone.
Also check Xynthesizr !!!! <---- THIS
Don't underestimate:
Arpist (you sequence 8 beats for 8 bars and adjust on the fly)
Or ChordPadPoly if you want to "strum" any chord in any synth via midi
Also ZedSynth and MiniMapper are under-rated gems
and Mitosynth is a monster along with its predecessor GrainScience
Understand
@Audiojunkie Thanks for the great list! And to everyone else too. I didn't realize the iPhone had all of these great music making apps. I've copied and pasted to Notes.
I keep seeing Xynthesizr pop-up. What is the USP on this? What makes it so popular? The sounds, the ease of use?
I ended up buying Xynthesizr to mess with today, and I'm really glad I did. This was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for, a fun evolving sequencer and a decent synth with lots of delay
Check Jokab's xynthesizr video, there is a pretty nice random function
You're welcome! There are actually a ton of apps available for the iPhone (even if there are less than iPad), but I tried to cut the list down to just 20 apps and 10 effects. I probably have 4 times that amount on my phone. :-)
It is the best available stand alone step-sequencer for the iPhone (DAWs excepted). You can control other synths with it, and it is easy to use. The sounds aren't bad either. Over all, it's popular because it's a pretty good app. :-)
ZedSynth looks really powerful, but it hardly ever gets mentioned, the one App Store review says AudioBus doesn't work and it has had no updates. So quite risky. Does it even work with iOS 9?
I've been using the life functions with neosoul keys dyno to create some cool background piano stuff. stunning.
And his Argon stuff too!
