  • I see no option to delete the update from General -> Settings -> Software Update @Zetagy

I am on iOS 8.4.1 and I deleted the 9.0 update. Too bad I didn't noticed the free space before, but for sure I gain lot of space back. The problem is that my ipad keeps downloading when charged every new update (9.0.1 , 9.0.2) and have to delete the update again.

I also recommend in every major iOS update the following:

Wait for the next iOS-> Back-up everything->Install the latest version of the "old" iOS -> reinitialize to factory ->restore the documents, patches etc....

  • Sure - that's what I normally do @Korakios. It's only seeing the 48MB or whatever - different for different devices - there, and not the actual 1GB.

    .

  • Ah - yes - sure - that's what I've always done before @Zetagy. Not working like it used to.

  • I believe the option to delete the update from the update screen, rather than the manage storage screen, started with iOS 8, so if that iPad is still on 7 that would be why you don't have that option.

As an aside, I didn't know jailbreaking was legal for phones and illegal for iPad. I do know that my jail broken phone ran like garbage after a while. Now it's on ios9 and not jail broken.

  • Ah - that may be why @mrufino1 :-/

  • Well - I bit the bullet. I updated that iPad to 9. :-(

BUT - I got back that storage. All of it. So, that's not good. (I mean, it's good that I got back the storage, but not good that that's what it was. I suggest that's a proven point is what I mean).

Cheers for this thread. I seem to be ok on my iPad because I am iOS 8.4.0 and have already downloaded and deleted the 8.4.1 update so 9 won't download until I tell it to.

But last night my other half was complaining that all the remaining memory on her 8Gb iPhone 5 had disappeared and we couldn't see why. So I guess she needs update or wipe the phone and reinstall. That's gonna make her day! (And therefore, by process of techno-rage osmosis, mine as well).

  • It will download before you tell it to @xen :-) It does a check periodically. You can't turn that off. So, please, be careful.

  • I turn Wi-Fi off when I charge the devices, maybe this can prevent unwanted downloads. It happened to me on the iPhone 6, I lost 2GB (9.0 and 9.0.1).

  • Just to note - I've seen several other users now in other places report the exact same issue - of these iOS 9 updates apparently taking up "Other" storage and not being deleted.

Thanks, I will have to remember to switch Wifi off before I charge!

  • OK. So, you switch it off before you charge, then what @xen? You switch it on at some other time? You cannot guarantee it won't download at some other time. I don't understand the logic there :-D

i believe that ios will only download the update automatically when your ipad is charging AND has wifi connected at the same time. So yeah, if you disconnect wifi when you charge, then turn it back on again when you unplug, you should theoretically never get the download occuring.

  • @Coloobar - those are app updates - not iOS updates. Makes no difference to Apple pushing an iOS update.

  • That's interesting @Halftone - I wasn't aware of that. Might be useful for the future. But, since in the studio I keep my iPads wired if they're connected to my iCM2/4+ for example, and, although I may have wifi off much of the time, I may need it on to xfer patches etc., it would be hard to predict.

Having said that, I'm pretty sure I've received the notification of the update having been downloaded when I'm nowhere near any power and haven't been for a while.

Still - worth noting I guess.

  • hmm, somewhere along the way I was prompted to opt out of automatically downloading OTA updates. I don't remember how or where, but I haven't been bothered by them since.

  • Nowhere I know of @Coloobar. Turning off app updates is one of the 1st things I do, along with a bunch of other stuff like putting most of the iOS default installed apps in an "Unused" folder and sticking it on the back page, turning off gestures, etc. etc.

It only downloads iOS updates when on WiFi and connected to the mains. If you turn off WiFi before you connect it won't download...at least that is what I read ahead of iOS 8 being released. Unless they have changed things...which is very possible! I'll keep you posted on how I get on.

    A bit after-the-horse-has-bolted, but ...

OK. MAYBE a partial solution (to forced OTA updates - not to removing ghost 1GB downloads from Other). Found this from elsewhere.

Block the following sites in your router:

    mesu.apple.com

    appldnld.apple.com

I tried that, and I could not contact the iOS update site. I could however still download app updates - which of course come from a different site. If only I'd known ... :-/

Naturally this will only work when you are at home. Go out and about and you risk getting the download from elsewhere where those sites aren't blocked. :-)

    Solution. Stay home. :-D

  • Interesting work around. I bet you could add those domains to Weblock so you wouldn't need to mess with your router and it would also work for any wifi network you were connected to.

  • @MusicInclusive Since you are cutting off internet connection to the device, and since you have all the apps backed up, maybe it would be a good time to look into Jail Breaking. Personally, I don't see it as an ethical issue, but a practical one--the device is out of date but still useful. While admittedly, I haven't done it, I don't see a problem with it once the device has become too old to benefit further from Apple. It would be a good way to get added functionality out of the device as well as allowing you to get access to the file system so that you can delete any forced downloads as needed (if they accidentally get downloaded). :-)

Jailbreaking is still illegal in the US for iPads @Audiojunkie - not an option for me. Not cutting off Internet access, only update access, controlled to be when I want to do the updates. @1nsomniak - no issue messing with my router's blocking settings - happy to do that as needed :-)

  • Ah, that's right. I forget that, because I'm using my iPhone 6 Plus exclusively, and not an iPad..... Dumb law to include one device type, but exclude another...

  • I deleted an ios update previously and now the system update says "download and install update, 1.1gb. Maybe if you delete after the first time it doesn't return to be deleted?
