Are you guys still having success with this? When I try to enable my iPad in the "IOS device browser"', it endlessly attempts to connect. I have to restart my iPad to get it working, and then it will only work until I disable it.
Works fine for me.
This is pretty awesome but it's not exactly a replacement for iCONNECTMIDI is it? Or am I confusing myself... I haven't tested it personally.
This feature is awesome, but i do have the same problems as @Blurgh. It seems that you have to "disable" the IOS device in the Audio/MIDI Setup before removing the cable, otherwise the IOS device need a hard reset before OSX is able to see it again.
Side note: Does anybody know how to make a script that will auto connect the IOS device when you plug in the cable?
Works like a charm for me. Midi side can be accomplished with bluetooth midi. Works flawlessly. Love it.
Has anybody tried this with GarageBand for the Mac as the DAW? I followed all the steps that were in the video, including enabling my iPad Air 2 as an input device, and nothing happens. I have been testing with SP Link Edition.
What information that I have found about this online always uses some other DAW like Logic or Ableton. It seems like it should work with GarageBand for the Mac but maybe I'm wrong?
And yes I'm running El Capitan, the latest version, as well as the latest version of IOS
Did you select the iPad as the input in GarageBand? I don't have GB installed or I would try it, but I'm sure it is possible.
I came up with a cool setup that allows me to use a single audio interface with my Mac and iPad simultaneously. All you do is connect the iPad in Audio Midi Setup and install a little free app called LineIn that allows you to monitor any input connected to your Mac. Then, with Studiomux you can route whatever audio you want back into the iPad. I think I used a free app from Apple called AU Lab as well so I could run the studiomux AU without having to use a DAW. It's REALLY cool.
Yup. I did that.
I guess I need to play around with this some more. Surely it must work somehow.
And that's a really cool setup. I hope to graduate to something like that eventually but for now I was hoping to take advantage of what is suppose to be the new simple way to connect iOS devices to your Mac via inter-device audio mode.
Tip: in Audio Midi Settings on the Mac create an aggregate device which binds the iPad and the built in audio out. Hope it helps.
That worked! Thanks so much. This is awesome!
Can you create an effects loop like I do with musicIO? If yes I might consider upgrading my Mac. I don't want to break any of my programs that I use.
Nope its one direction only as of now.
All the more reason not to update to OS X 10.11. That's another win iOS developers and another example of how Apple can't innovate only imitate, in terms of music. Which is good because if they maximized the potential of GarageBand iOS, or the one on Mac they would have a monopoly of the music industry. They have the most reliable OS. The best performing computers for music. The cheapest DAW ever in logic(which delivers way more content than any other daw). All the logic content is also available at no extra cost in main stage(50+gigs) for $30. If they were to perfect everything we might have a dead ecosystem and innovation come to a halt. Developers would be undercut and it'd be hard to make decent money.
On the other hand if everything were perfect then there would be no need for anything else.
Why not. I think this is a cool move from Apple. If your not on El Cap then theres Music IO etc or if you want to create Effect Loops. But for me hooking my iPhone and iPad via Lighting to Reason and Abletone Live with Link is an awesome music recording extension. Even though its only one way.
@BiancaNeve This is true, but I am firm believer in competition breeds innovation. Especially for the iOS market. What if Apple bought out all of the developers who create innovative ways, or straight up stole ideas? They create a powerhouse GB iOS with all of the functionality you could ever ask for with no charge. That would be worst case scenario imo for the consumer, developers, and Apple. Imagine relying on Apple updates for resolving bugs that occur in flawed OS updates for legacy iPhones iPads ect...You'd be waiting 6 months minimum. They already get a cut from developers, so it's in their best interest to let others do what they can't.
Sorry I'm a pedant. I agree that it's kind of Apple to not squeeze out all the other guys. (A point I made back in the discussion about the latest GB update). It also makes good sense from a legal point of view. I recall Miccysoft bailing out Corel and Apple just so they could say there was some competition to word and Windows.
So no midi?
Damn this is pretty cool although 3 things,
1 it needs midi as well
2 does it work when connected to a USB hub?
3 damn I just bought an interface for my iPad a few months ago!
I haven't tried it with midi but o_imseng said it worked with bluetooth midi a few posts up, could try wifi midi too, see if that works.
I have just tried it via a crappy bus powered usb hub and it worked fine.
Btw you can split this into 2 mono channels if you pan hard left and right in two separate apps, also worked in dm1 when I hard panned the kick and snare.
Ok thanks
And how about music io?
Will that work with AUM? And will it work with a USB hub?
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202000
My usb hub is usb2, not sure anything before 2 would have enough bandwidth although I haven't checked, well worth reading what skiphunt posted up if you haven't set up an aggregate device before, should be a few youtube vids that can help too.
I've just spent the last hour or so trying to get musicio to work with inter device audio as separate discreet channels but failed, they keep merging into the same channel, I'm sure I've done something wrong somewhere, it worked with studiomux earlier as my ipad came up as two separate devices when I was setting up an aggregate device, one called ipad, 2 in/ 0 out and the other what I called my ipad 18 in/ 2 out. I'm too tired to carry on and fear I'm no longer making any sense when I type, but I tried and now I go to bed defeated and confused. If any of you know what I'm doing wrong could you point me in the right direction as I'm stumped, goodnight everyone:)
I actually find this works better than audiopassthru on my iconnectmidi4+, the latter of which can be very glitchy. I've no need for this function at all but it's nice to see Apple have finally implemented it, and that it works quite painlessly.
I would like to see that too but with a lightening to lightening cable. or no cable at all like air drop
Is it possible to use inter-device audio through an iOS interface?
This is the scenario:
iPad into Apogee one (recording a guitar) then into Mac by inter-device audio
Theoretically if there is a lightning cable splitter with identical outputs you could do this. I always wanted to have AirPlay support with my I track and hdmi dock as well. Can you do air play while docked to an interface?
That will be killer!
You could have also the possibility to connect into Windows and streaming from iOS interface through audiomux
There is a way to sync midi clock between iPad and Mac via Inter-Device Audio? i.e. my drum pattern on DM1 plays and record at the same tempo of Garageband on Mac
Has anyone been having issues with inter-device audio since iOS 10.3 came out? It works fine with my iPhone but when I try to enable it on my iPad it just disappears from the device list and won't re-appear unless I unplug and plug it back in. (It also disappears from the Xcode device list)
