Different Drummer 4.0 is out

The big new feature is Zenterface which is a new way to interact with DD. Makes it easier to understand DD and it's a lot of fun to use.

Cool can't wait to check it out!

  • I will not believe this until Mister Junkie stamps it with his seal of approval etc.

  • Looks like a Patterning inspired radial sequencer on top of the old interface. So wanted to love Different Drummer but there are too many issues with the interface that got in the way of a productive workflow, I ended up deleting it.

Would be great if I'm wrong and the general interface has been sorted. But the screenshots don't suggest this and I'm in no hurry to find out after all this time.

  • And on sale right now $9,99.

  • Gotta admit I'm tempted, always been interested in this and the radial seq looks interestering

  • Only problem is I don't understand the zenterface. Ho hum......

  • The first thing it says is “<< tap this button to switch to the Zenterface.”
I’m tapping it. Nothing happens. Stupid app.

  • Close that message then press the button top left with the same symbol.

  • I like the patterning approach and feel the graphics are helpful in getting what I'm after. An updated manual would be helpful in starting out with the Zenterface, but I've managed to figure out many of the new tools without it. You can work strictly in the Zenterface side without having to go back into the original interface, which would probably be easier for most folks.

  • I think i've made more progress with the Zenterface in five minutes than th whole time i've had DD. XD

Oner thing i can't see is a way to reset the value once you've changed it and if you switch back the default view you lose your pattern but i just realised it's an IAP. :|

  • Ya, I kept tapping the little icon, and it did nothing, I thought, well they should have checked this out before they released it, lol...... Then, my eye caught the "real" icon to the left. Don't worry, I smacked myself. ;)

  • $5.00 to unlock the saving is prob. something I'll do, jsut need to see how much I use the app ATM.

  • Underneath all the madness there's a very good app in DD but I still wish the developer would sort out the interface design and layout a bit more. also iTunes sharing of presets.

One thing I really want to do is import midi files into DD and muck about with them with the DD tools, is that possible?

  • @musikmachine - tap in the center to reset the wave parameters for the track. If you drag and release beyond the center, you can reset the waves for all tracks. I don't believe this will help if you're just trying to reset a single value though.

@Carnbot - I'm not aware of any means to import midi files, but it might be possible with iTunes or iFunbox.

I might finally cave at 10 bucks. Either way, glad to see DD keeping at it. Congrats to the dev on v4.

  • Agreed....I think this ver might be what he was ultimately after....a more accessible user experience.

  • Crap...I meant to hook up that "icon" to actually be a button but that screen disappears after first run so I forgot about it. I knew someone would complain if I didn't ;-) Originally I had an arrow pointing to the real button. I will keep on trying to clarify the interface and fix bugs but I feel it works better than ever in general so it's the right direction. It's very challenging to give users so many choices and remain simple. I find many serious synth apps to be much more complicated and confusing but usually those devs get a pass because synths have a tradition of being technical. All I can say is music can be technical too! Also, I did not model this after Patterning and Figure also uses a radial metaphor for measures. I don't even own Patterning (tried to buy it once but couldn't). However, Patterning did inspire me to finally go ahead do what I wanted to do for a long time and looks really cool. I have much more wild stuff coming this and next year so stay tuned...

    I don't think it's a big deal. Didn't ruin my day. :)

  • Anxious to see what you have in store @technemedia!

  • thanks @funjunkie27 I'll give it a try

Hi, is there a way to import midi files onto the DD timeline? I think this would be a great feature which you could "open in " DD
it would be interesting to play around with a midi composition made elsewhere in DD. Also record midi data in to distort and manipulate.

    many thanks.

  • Great suggestion @Carnbot. I'd also be interested in whether you have any luck importing midi. I'm at work, so I won't be able to try it myself.

I like the Zenterface because it gets you to extremely unique sequences, quickly. It's also seems to work faster than the other interface. With that said, I haven't been able to get anything really structured yet. But that doesn't bother me, I can see the use for this as a way to get really esoteric MIDI patterns.

  • Yes the zenterface is definitely a nice addition, also the pop out menu on the right for settings should be a method used in the main part of the app for most of the menus to give it more breathing space.

  • I've wanted myself to be able to mess with Midi files in DD for a long time. I just have to figure out how to translate Midi data into something DD understands. I was planning to work on an overhaul of Grid Mode that may be the ticket for this. I was also going to add a Step Sequencer mode (Step sequencer meets waves!). Then some top secret new stuff that I'm excited about...Should be a fun year. Agree about the popups...very handy. Also I WILL overhaul the Save Panel (expand it like Settings and Mixer)...it's time. One more thing I can tell you about is something I'm going to add something called Structure so even without making a ABA Sequence you can make settings change according to a sectioned measure pattern. Patience—lots to do (plus an awesome new Video Pixound)!

  • Sounds great, look forward to all that :)
Yeah definitely think icons around the edges with pop out menus is the way to go for the whole app, so good to see it's evolving.
nice update thanks! definitely getting the IAP.

  • Thanks for the encouragement! I did get one popup in the main screen so far on the "New" button which gives quick access to new options for new wave sets and any templates you have saved...much better.

    You're a genius.

    This.

  • Still don't totally understand DD, but the new interface is fun.
