shore up my spectral with csGrain?
I'm really loving working with spectral program these days and was wondering about csGrain. Looks very interesting and well designed. Anyone have this and/or other spectral apps? How do they compare? Which is best for music?
On the mac side, I'm using Soundhack (which is amazing and free but takes a little to understand) and an Amazing Noises plugin for Live. O, and a super old version of Spektral Delay (which still works!)

Which iPad do you have? csGrain has been known to run poorly on some older devices.

Both unfortunately have a few issues, I usually notice them in Audiobus or IAA, but when I just go direct it works (which is fine if I'm just processing hardware). With that said however, Grain and Spectral are my definitive two favorite effect apps for iOS. The effects are very unique and highly usable, harmonizing and bonding with the original audio in a way that's perfect. Hard for me to be clear about this one, I just love CsSpectral to bits.
wow. nice to hear. so which should I get? Is csGrain that different from csSpectral? Or is csSpectral kinda like the next version of csGrain? Hard to tell from developer's website.

i love how csSpectral sounds, particularly with chimey sounds like ChiangMai in Gadget or Laplace. The only problem I have is that the Audiobus panel in csSpectral is frozen. audiobus still works fine. a slight word of caution though is that you may want to run it through a gate as you can occassionaly get some earsplitting results.
CS grain is insane! super hard to understand at first but its nutters fx if you seek that. I want spectral grain but I did fear that might push the hardware limits, I could be wrong though and I think both apps with the C Sound thing is really odd but amazing. Hails
It's personal, but I prefer CsSpectral. Grain has more 'standard' effects, in addition to it's primary granular section. CsSpectral has a host of spectral algorithms at it's center, with supplementary effects surrounding that. The other fx are such as reverb phaser, granular delay, variable bit depth delay, gates, and resonators. Many more that I haven't touched.
Spectral is in a different league to multi-effect apps like Turnado, Flux, dFX, and Effectrix. It's basically a harmonizer (kinda like what an Eventide H3000 does), and therefore does a lot of pitched fx. when you hear it you know it's an effect, but you can't pinpoint it like you can phasers, chorus, or reverbs. Great on anything I've put into it. My favorites are Voice and polysynths.
I'll definitely be seeking out more unusual territories (if that's even possible any more), so leaning towards csSpectral. thanks everyone. VERY helpful.
Aleyas, just wondering if you still use and would recommend this, or has anything Auv3 come along that is a viable contender to this. Looks and sounds pretty damn incredible.
May as well comment on both Cs spectral and Cs grain at the same time
And I'm only interested in live input. Saw a lot of comments about this being heavy on cpu, but those were mostly from a few years ago.
For anyone that owns csgrain or cs spectral, do they work in AUM? I’m interested in both but they aren’t being updated. I emailed the developer, but didn’t receive a response. Maybe we can collectively reach out to the developer. I would like to know if he plans to have AUM support before I purchase them.

Just tried cs spectral in AUM and it does not load. Tried loading the standalone and then loading in AUM but still nothing. Even if it did load it would eventually crash as even the standalone does at some point. Great for making sample fodder but hard to recommend.

I have a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5.
It used to crash a lot worse. i think I can go twenty or thirty minutes now without a crash. That being said I am usually manipulating parameters quite a bit when it crashes.
I only used it a tiny bit but there were issues with having both on my ipad. i think they both are just called ‘filter’ when you go to load them and it didnt seem consistent which one I would get.
Cs Spectral is working in AUM for me, you may have to load the standalone yourself while AUM is attempting to load it. I'm running the latest ios version. Just used it with Animoog, Kronecker, and digistix. If I have time later I'll post a demo.

@hacked_to_thanks! please do put a video or even just a short description of how to do this, great. If this works in AUM I will definitely buy, even if it is a bit unstable.
I can get it to load now. It takes several tries for me with many failed loads. Eventually it did load but after quitting everything and trying again no luck... but again eventually it does. No clear set of steps gets it to load 100% of the time for me. This really may not have much longevity.
I went ahead and bought it. I routed AUM to audiobus and loaded Cs spectral in the fx slot of audiobus. Yeah, had to try a few times to get it to load. The trick mentioned before about loading manually while audiobus is trying to load did kind of work, was a tad temperamental though. Routed live audio into it in AUM, but none of the effects actually seem to be working. I haven't had a chance to look at the manual. It may even be that I'm doing something wrong in audiobus, as I haven't used it in a really long time. Spectral shows it is getting audio input and outputting audio, I can change the gain levels in spectral etc and hear it, but the effects therein are largely not doing anything audible. Will try to look at the manual later today when I have more time (if it has one, lol, no assumptions with ios...).
I’m joining you in learning this @Gavinski. Looks like the effects are off by default, and clicking the respective name turns it on (Filters/Delays/Spectral/Reverbs/Cutters).
Takes a bit of fiddling to get the app functional, but I was also successful in routing from AB3 to AUM. So glad for this thread, I was going to give up on this one.
Oh, that's simple enough then, great. I've got to look for a manual then for sure cos that's not obvious at all

Hey @Gavinski. Looks like there was already a lot of discussion after your first question. I feel a bit bad cause this used to be my all-time favorite effect, but I hadn't actually used it in years. Like other's here, I couldn't get it to load as IAA in Aum. But it looks like you and some others have managed to get it open. Like the comment above mine said, by default in the app, all effects are turned off. You've got to make sure the desired effect is highlighted blue.
I did manage to get it loaded in Audiobus 2. Playing around with it for a few minutes just reminded me why I love this app so much. The spectral fx are very powerful when used subtly. It's easy to go overboard, but the individual mix levels are great for dialing it back to get classy harmonizer patches. Protip is that by long pressing a knob, an automation window opens. So you can modulate any parameter. My favorite 'spectral' effects are 1, 2, and 3. Even years ago, #4, the spectral EQ has never worked for me. I think it was a bug. I never really touched the delays or the cutters in this one.
Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything that directly replace CsSpectral. Moebius Lab has a couple spectral effects, and gets into that 'roll your own with weird effects' territory. But it's still IAA too, and not nearly as intuitive.
For harmonizing my go to app is iPulsaret and now FRMS. Not exactly comparable, but similar in the fact that it produces results simple multi-fx or standard fx chains can't. The resonator and modal effects in Burns Audio Spectrum are good candidates. Objeq is great too. Also, I know I shouldn't, but.. Drambo has a surprising amount of overlap with CsSpectral.
FX in common:
I think with a combination of the apps above, you can produce similar sounds to Cs.But it wouldn't be nearly as convenient. Wish Boulanger Labs would update their apps.
