Praxis Beats is a very interesting variation on the grid sequencer: no song mode, more of a live-play deal. The export single track functionality make it very useful as a stem source for DAWs also. The slicing, tuning, panning available for each fraction (triplets, 16ths etc) of each hit, is unique on iOS, more than a little like Breaktweaker on desktop. Also a midi controller...

Synergy, Aurora, and Aurora for iPhone are probably the most powerful of this type. There's synths, user load able samplers, automation, song mode, live mode...

    Praxis is really good.

Just needs couple more controls for each sound and I would use it more. I have both IPhone and IPad version.

    It is very "Attack" ...............

what 'few' more controls would you suggest, I'm very interested in this one?

    ADSR per sound

More specific control of the F/x per sound.
    Try the IPhone version

I got it the app as a promo from the company and can vouch for the quality of the people at the company as well as the app.

If you are into a quick on the fly via performance type sequencer for background or rhythm its cool.

The app is specifically impressive if you use Dropbox. Super easy to use. The factory sample sets are also really good.

Just my opinion. It is definitely like Attack. Automation on Fx is cool as well.

  • @kobamoto
Fx or filter fun per track or per hit or even per fraction. And perhaps some following actions...
(Not sure how possible that is here but)

The people are pretty approachable I've found. As is it's a crazy tool, 16 slices of say a vocal or kick, with 16 possible pan volume and pitch settings...

  • any word of it becoming universal?

  • I wish every app would adopt their audio export options

  • @JohnnyGoodyear there is a manual with pictures that might be helpful for learning how to use the Yamaha Mobile Sequencer.

    WITH PICTURES!

    :)

You know me too well kind sir....

Actually have just spent the last hour in a kind of whirling dervish trance bashing away at my lovely old weighted huge keyboard (also a Yamaha) at the 'Synth and Dr Pad'. Basically one simple piano arpeggiator and some cross between boogie-woogie and an old pub pianist with flat cap and a gap-toothed idiot's smile. Brilliant stuff. Roll out the barrel indeed.

What a weird and wonderful app though.

Yeah, I used it for my Drumline in this song:

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/8371/sci-fi-track-tangerine-dream-tribute

That's also where I first learned what some light expansion via the Pro-MB plugin can do for toms (makes 'em sound sooo much sweeter), but that's a topic for another time. Suffice to say I deleted YMMS to free up space on my crowded Air 1, but I kept Yamaha Synth & Dr Pad and wouldn't willingly delete it. Feels much better knowing I have that one at the ready in my arsenal

Yes. A particular favorite of mine that one. That's the trouble with good work, does set a certain standard.... :)

  • @eustressor Also reminds me, curse you, that for all the C, DS and Q etc, I don't have MB...

  • OK. I'm taking it that everyone who knows how to use the Yamaha apps has their own private club here of which the first rule is: "We do not tell everyone how awesome they are as soon as you get past the impossibly silly layout etc."

    Right?

Am a bit amazed that it's taken me this long. From a song-writing perspective they offer just WAY more than I ever realized....

  • @JohnnyGoodyear I'm spoiling the rules of Yamaha Club by talking about Yanaha Club! Here's a video SERIES (only posting the first one) for your enjoyment:

A bit 'off topic' to the above, if you want to, I would invite you to this 'children toy music' thingie, free. (Thanks to @mgmg4871 :) )
FWIW the concept of 'mirror' gesturing (camera) on the sequencer is quite cool IMHO.

    Shhhhhh (but thanks!). :)

  • I'm not finding anything resembling 'Praxis Beats' on the App Store for iPhone. Anyone have a link?

  • edited December 2015

And you get "update to Pro" just sending one tweet!

  • edited December 2015

    Warning.

If you download the app to your iPad first and you unlock the "upgrade to Pro" via twitter, and then you try to install it to your iPhone (or another idevice), you'll probably get one "failed" message, so you have to delete the previous twitter posted and send to twitter again.

That's the way it worked to me.

  • what if you don't use twitter?

  • lol :D ...... it's not that, I'm just ahead of my time doing the new thang...... not tweeting.

  • hey does anybody know what's the difference between pocket beats and praxis?

Catching up with this thread. This is an interesting post @Littlewoodg (as always). I have Aurora but have almost never used it (it confused me when I bought it two years ago - might have a look again). And Praxis Beats I might look into.

    My list would be:

    • Genome (midi out and lovely remix function + midi CCs).
    • Gadget of course- the best touch usability out there (but it's just internal sequencing)
    • Xynthersizer is nice for the reasons stated
    • Any other DAW where I just jab in 16th notes
    • My hardware Beatstep - nice for being tactile and having 16 patterns.
  • So @Littlewoodg - Praxis says 'glitch, roll and fill' to your hearts desire.

Could you tell me how it achieved this and if this means midi out?

  • edited December 2015

@Matt_Fletcher_2000 back at you, interesting post wise (to say the very least)

Glitch roll and fill definitely happens. The parameters, in combination, do some very very interesting things, depending on -

First, the samples loaded, which can be whatever, and pretty long (haven't got a #)
Next, the number of slices (per "hit") from 1-16
Then how you set Pitch (2 octaves), Volume, and Pan for each of these possible 136 slices across the grid

Volume played off of # of slices gets the glitch, buzz, drum rolls and fills (crazy really when you think about using volume to gate/shape as many as 48 slices across say three continuous "hits": crazy syncopation and tension. Maths!). Fun with vocal stuff and pitch pitching each slice. Live play is a blast, set up sets of rows and changes within rows...evolving patterns, including melody.

I'm going to try midi out next.

Edit: Praxis Beats driving iElectribe, Beathawk (note, control, clock) holy cow shoulda tried that before cool cool cool. ttttttttttttrap, for example, but lots more. Horn samples are crazy.

Exporting single track loops from inside the app is what I'd been doing, after playing around live with it, setting up sequences of clips for laying into DAWs. The export deal for the stems is exemplary as mentioned per @kobamoto. The extra 1200 samples are very cool, as are the factory items.

Dj Puzzle has some goodies and demos too, this via Tim Webb http://discchord.com/blog/2015/11/12/make-trap-beats-with-praxis-beats.html

  • so the glitching is not of the time shift variant but more of the buzz, drumroll type?

  • Fun with Praxis Beats (iPhone) and Caramel and Frobulator

  • @kobamoto said:

This, and glitching stuff up with pitch variation, and creating gaps with muting slices within the hits. Varying pitch across almost anything, including stutter/buzz becomes tonal, (pitch variable 2 octaves worth) but if the samples are already tonal then hmm, and using the same sample in parallel with itself on other rows at different base pitches (choir/orchestral or whatever multi samples...). Anything with rich timbre, Spoken word stuff, speak and spell or movie dialogue, pitching slices make glitches nice.

This is good and crunchy. The tag says "Praxis Beats iPhone". Your track is Pocket Beats, right? The iPhone version lacks the controls Praxis Beats has for varying volume pitch and pan per slice.

  • thanks littlewoodg, very informative.

  • I forgot all about Praxis. Thanks for bring it up. @Littlewoodg you are the featured commenter at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/praxis-beats-drum-machine/id659677415?mt=8 :)
