Audulus 3 - how does it, or does it at all compare to Reaktor?

  • @Samu - You can create your own custom sequencers in Audulus. I'd argue that most sequencers are pretty limited. Audulus allows you to make any kind of sequencer you can think of! I'm cloning the Monome inside Audulus - you'll be able to use it on the iPad, and it will have similar functionality, and will also be "open source" and "user programmable." 3 types of button presses - tap, double tap, and hold (mode).

  • I think I've found my new favourite 'modular' app on the iPad, way easier to use than the 'others'.
    It will take some time to get around all the modules and see what they can do. Without reading any documentation it too maybe 5 minutes to knock up a simple mono-synth in the attached image.

    @Audulus_Mark I do have a small feature request regarding moving the modules around the screen. A 'snap to grid' would be a really helpful to create organised UI. Another would be to 'favourite' some of the modules for quick and easy access tho those modules that one uses the most.

    I have to say it feels pretty intuitive to use Audulus and that's a very good sign.
    It's a very deep app and the learning has just begun :)

  • @Samu - I would like a snap to grid too - I've mentioned that to Taylor, it's on the "eventually" list. Lots and lots of other features to work on before that. If more and more people buy Audulus, perhaps Taylor can hire a second programmer - I don't do any backend stuff like he does, just patch design, so I can't help him on that front.

    Taylor thinks the "Favorite" button is a good idea - for now, as a stop-gap, you can tag any module you like with "Fav" or something, and a new tag will pop up in the tag browser. We'll integrate this in the future though, that's an easy add - thanks for the idea!

  • @Samu - forgot to mention, if you zoom very far in, you can line up things pretty easily. If you notice inside the modules, everything looks very nice a neat - that took some time, but it's easier when you're close up.

    I think the app would benefit from more bundled 'playable example-projects'. That's one of those things that sparked my interest for AnalogKit and zMors. I'll see if I can figure out how to do 'meta-modules' that produce sound that can be easily sequenced to make a simple 'beat-box'. But for now I take everything in small baby-steps so I won't overload my brain :)

  • Much like when I started with Jasuto, it took me 2 days to get to where one of my simple synths actually made sound. In Jasuto it was because part of the signal path was overloading (causing the app to throw its internal 'no sound for you' safety switch') and i needed to install limiters. In the case of Audulus it was like my iphone (a 6+) was just not allowing Audulus access to the audio output. I had everything set up correctly and could even see responses to the onscreen keyboard in the meter of the Master Output module, but nada on my headphones. I don't really know how I resolved it, either-- after about a day of refusing to sound, the exact same patch finally started producing sound and now everything seems fine and I'm learning how to use the Scaler to make an ADSR talk to a filter.

    I have just one feature request - 2 octaves for the onscreen keyboard please? I'm a devotee of tiny in-app keyboards and 2 octaves would do me nicely (or is there an under the hood way to change the onscreen keyboard's scope already...?)

    I'm working on those as fast as I can - I have one beta up already, and it's pretty effin' wild if I don't say so myself. It's a very CPU-intensive patch and works best on computer, but it does open on iPhone 5s at 45% cpu or something.

    I hope people have a little patience - I'm doing everything I can to get as many users as I can fluent in Audulus, so they can kinda start stepping in and helping people who are having problems while I slink back into my lab and come out with great modules like Da Boom Bap. This is JUST - literally JUST the kick drum. When it's completed, you will actually only be able to run the whole drum machine on a computer - maybe an iPad pro. They will, however, be broken up into modules, and I may also make a stripped down version with fewer features for CPU time-conscious iOS users. But all that takes lots of time - that kick module itself took 12+ hours, and I'm not even done.

    I work 12+ hour days every day, and I work until I can barely keep my eyes open. I know Taylor does the same. I feel the faster we get Audulus up to where more people can see it the way I and other advanced designers like JDRaoul and Afta8 do, the better that will be for everyone.

    @JonLewis - We could perhaps make an organ style stacked 2 octave one, but making the keys smaller than they are would not be good. The problem is the iPad and iPhone share a UI, and there really isn't room on the iPhone for two octaves. And, this is just me speaking in my own personal capacity, i mean, I like the on screen keyboard too, but c'mon just get a QuNexus! They rock SO hard. Virtually indestructible, and I actually find the pads much more "synth like" than the keys you find on most synths that are trying to be springy piano keys. Plus the QuNexus is cheap, works on iOS, and even works with modulars too! After touch too!

    I did notices a graphical glitch and it's regarding the 'lock icon' that doesn't change, it's always 'open' even if the UI is locked, small but minor issue. I had a quick look at the Audulus Forums but failed to find a 'known issues' thread?

    Well kinda! There's a Moog Prodigy patch on the forums, with layout to mimic the hardware was what sold me on getting into learning the program and about synths in general.

    It's funny looking at it now with how much better v3 looks. There really is something to be said about the feel of working in Audulus compared to the rest of the iOS modular synths. It's sleek and doesn't look like a kid's toy chest, and compacting your nodes into custom sub-patch 'packages' feels very gratifying after you've built something.
