  • Wow. There goes the weekend.

  • Link yes. MIDI per playhead later ...

  • Sounds like a very cool update!

  • Not Playhead routing yet but soon according to notes....

  • This Ableton link is awesome across apps running in the background

  • Man I don't stop switching between apps and updates to see who's next on LINK list :)

I was too exciting without finish reading the sentence, haha! But Per Playhead Routing is good news too! ;)

According to ableton.com, iPolysix and Patterning are next but I'm afraid that's all for now

  • I got Link to Midi to work with DM1 to ELASTIC Drums, but not Fugue Machine.

^ free tools! Yeah! This is a great addition.

Thanks Alex! ...and ...er Naut? Who is Naut? ;-b

  • Link to MIDI for the win. Can't wait to try this new world/old world out. Thank you, Alexander!

  • Awesome!

I am able to control Gadget, iElectribe iPhone, Fugue Machine at the same bpm at the same time and have them all connected to AB, then I can independently stop and start one of these apps and change the speed of any app in the chain with 'Link to Midi'.

    Thanks so much, developer!

  • I was wondering if someone was going to implement this technology. Not only did this happen immediately, but it's free! Wonderful!

  • Does one need Ableton to take advantage of the new Link to Midi tool?

    No, you don't need Ableton.

  • Nope see here. All iOS apps synced with LINK. No Ableton Live involved.

Cool idea. But there's remarkably few apps that seem to have midi clock in and transport controls in. Only one I have found that works as expected so far is Molten. But then since mOlten is one of my fav drum Apps I'm a happy girl

    Thanks Mr Alexandernaut.

    Yeah.

  • Having zero luck with Link to MIDI so far. Strange stuff. When L2M is sending 100bpm, the non-Link receiver is showing 108bpm. Then I raise the Link's bpm and the receiver (Arpeggist) changes to a similarly arbitrary number. DM1 doesn't recognize the bpm at all. Similar weirdness with Arp Pro, from the same dev, so I'm not sure it's just disparities in how the MIDI is implemented. Early days. Or I'm slow. Time will tell.

No, Sir! you need to have apps that support the Ableton Link to have L2M to link them together!

  • Ah! Is this app only for sending clock to devices, and not to apps that support MIDI Clock? I guess I was hoping for too much. Thanks! Still handy, though.

  • @Kaikoo Okay. I think you've confused me. I understand that you have to have L2M alongside a Link-enabled app. I was using Fugue Machine to provide the Link love. Anyway, further experimentation is necessary.

  • I have no idea what I was doing, but check this out. I set up Fugue Machine and Gadget in Audiobus to n-Track studio (which accepts midi clock in). Also set Link to Midi up with n-Track virtual midi for the midi site and Gadget and Fugue as the Link sites. Pushed the Audiobus play button and after several tries, got audio tracks to record in time on n-Track. It also matched n-Tracks metronome beat exactly too. Pretty sure I couldn't do that before Link, or Link to Midi.

LAWYER! You very obviously know exactly what you are doing and I suggest Sir you are a boffin and I claim my five pounds.

  • Link to Midi works well for things outside of the iOS App world. It converts LINK to Midi Clock as far as I understand. As Midi Clock Implementation is wonky and what got the development of LINK started in the first place you won't have much success with apps and L2M. It depends on the midi implementation of the App.

I noticed this too when I tried to sync up the arp of Sunrizer of L2M. The clock is alyways glitching between correct bpm and +10 bpm

  • Did anyone succeed in using L2M with external hardware? I tried Beatstep pro and didn't get it to work at all.... :'(

  • Yeah. I've given up on trying to make it work with anything onboard for now. I don't have a whole lot of external midi gear around these days, but I might dig out my old Kawai K3 just for fun.

I'm hoping that the reason Link is being rolled out with a few choice apps is because these devs implemented their midi with best practices. Then, to get an app "Link-enabled" the other developers would have to follow similar practices, bringing more consistency to midi implementation on iOS overall.

That, or they could be making it so easy to add Link that midi implementation gets even worse. @Sebastian ?

  • @JohnnyGoodyear I sir am no boffin! I mean I have boffed once or twice in my day but I'm not boffin like I used to. But on a serious note regarding this Link business, I now realize I need a Lava lamp to go with my curtains.
