Animoog reaches adulthood
New update 2.3.3 released yesterday. I'm a little excited about this:
- Added support for MIDI program change, mapped to the presets in the currently active category in the order they're displayed.
Comments
What does this actually mean in the everyday world for us plodders? (not you, us )
It means you now have the ability to use midi control to change the patch sounds. This can be very useful during a song where you want to use more than one sound from Animoog during a song and need a quick way to change between the patches. If you are a guitarist, think of it as a floor multieffects pedal, where you can change from clean to distorted with a push of a pedal button.
"mapped to the presets in the currently active category in the order they're displayed."
Does this not mean that the program numbers will all change when you save a new preset in that category ?
e.g.
Preset B - Program 1
Preset C - Program 2
then save Preset A - this will go to the top of the list as it is first alphabetically
Preset A - Program 1
Preset B - Program 2
Preset C - Program 3
If this does cause a problem you should save your presets with a number prefix so they stay in the same order
e.g
1_Preset B
2_Preset C
3_Preset A
EDIT: It will be fine if all you are doing is using buttons to scroll through presets, it will cause you grief though if you put specific program change messages into your tracks.
Ha, @JohnnyGoodyear i'm definitely one of "us" not them. :-b
To me it means "mash a button on my MIDI keyboard, Animoog changes its sounds/preset". Yay!
Thanks AJ.
This is much more my language
Wow, very impressed. Hope other synth makers take note.
Isem, imini etc
So what is the exact procedure for mapping program changes?
I have a Novation Remote 25 SL MkII that I've mapped to various Animoog controls - lots of fun! I tried to map two buttons so that one would change presets down and the other would change presets up. That is so not happening.
If somebody could post or point me to a tutorial detailing how to set up the controller and the app to make it work, it would be lovely.
@bass0 just use standard MIDI program change messages, not cc messages, no mapping is required. Sending the program change with a particular number will jump instantly to that preset in the active category
Very very cool @GeertBevin
Does this work for program bank change to switch categories?
No it doesn't since that would conflict with people that already used MIDI CC 0 for other mappings.
Thanks, program change will be so useful. Animoog will be showing up on stage even more now =D
Speaking of Animoog maturing, has anyone tried MIDI recording in Auria Pro since Geert changed some of the "poly-legato MIDI" behavior? @Matt_Fletcher_2000 ?
Erm. I got it recording some poly data into MTS a while back I think.
Haven't tried with AP to be honest.
@GeertBevin, I tried, but to no avail. I'm not familiar with the program change/bank change aspect of MIDI, I'll read up on it.
For now, I'm trying to correctly configure the buttons on my Novation controller, referring to the manual. I tried to fiddle around with the parameters, but so far no luck. I did check my controller output with Midiflow and upon pressing the designated button, a CC0 P001 signal was detected, if that makes sense. The Animoog version checks out and the MIDI input asterisk lights up when pressing the buttons. Must be a newbie detail I'm missing, I'll try again tomorrow.
hi, I'm also trying to use this big feature. I regularly use program change from my keyboard tho change preset of korg im1, sunrizer and galileo and it works ok. But sending progam change in animoog didn't seem to change anything...
I only send program change, not lsb msb data. is there particular setting to make it work?
@bass0 , it works perfectly and is simple. Novation is a top controller.
Why do you put midiflow in there? It is not necessary at all.
It is a simple click on pot and "learn"
On my controller I go on ch.1, (same as Animoog) and click on CC learn and learn all the buttons and pots and save it as a template in Animoog.
For program change my PCR-300 has a dedicated pot for PC.
You could assign PC to a pot if it's not on your controller.
Ok, for me it works only in CH 1
I really hope Animoog AU is on the 2016 menu. Then I think it will have really reached adulthood

@soundklinik, you underestimate me. I already have set up my Remote SL with Animoog for everything (ADSR, filter, delay, XY etc.) and saved the templates in both Animoog and the Remote SL (it's even my default start-up template). Program change just won't work.
I used Midiflow just to monitor what messages were being sent from the Novation. Otherwise, I only use Midiflow to route my Blueboard to Loopy HD (so I can use long press).
Hmm, I set up both the Novation and Animoog to communicate on channel 2 to avoid conflicts with the Blueboard which defaults to channel 1. Following @hrestov 's post, I'll try using channel 1 in Animoog. Anyway, the Blueboard and the Novation probably can't conflict as they're on different MIDI 'ports'.

I'm sorry, definitely didn't mean to, it's that sometimes you give a brief answer and have to come back to explain something very basic, that you took for granted that the other person knows...
Doesn't your SL have program change?
On my PCR I can change program no problem, (just verified that it works)
Thank you, @GeertBevin!
@JohnnyGoodyear It's also really helpful for recalling a song setup from a MIDI sequencer. Set a program change message at the top of your track and anytime you load the song again, you're ready to go. I guess in the world of iOS sequencers with IAA and AB State Saving and fairly limited support for program changes among sequencers and instrument apps it's not used all that often. I sequence externally sometimes and try to limit the apps I use to ones that support program changes so that I don't have to do the 'wait, what was I using?' two-step.
@syrupcore Thanks Professor. I hate that 'wait, what was I using?' That other guy is always brilliant or terrible, but never leaves any notes behind. Says it's all part of being in the moment. Arsehole.
@soundklinik, yes, the problem was that I was on channel 2. Now I programmed the PC buttons to channel 1 and it's working well!
Love the recent update with program change, thanks @GeertBevin
I've got a setup where I'm sending modulation (and program changes) from a Lemur patch on a different ipad to my main ipad with animoog on it. But I also want to use my midi keyboard which is on a different midi port. Is there a way to have multiple midi in ports at the same time in Animoog?
If not please add this as a feature request, many thanks!
edit: just solved this using Midiflow, but option to select multiple midi in ports would be great.
This would be my top synth for which I hope gets an AU update which would enable patch/midi saving within host such as MTS/midisteps and upcoming Modstep host.
With the new update it receives in All MIDI channels, not only channel 1
no way to restrict this to one channel?
Of course. In setup switch from Omni MIDI receiving channel to one of your choice
ok misunderstood,
I'm using midiflow to control my apps. In midiflow there is a send on load feature that can send program changes (it has an msb set to cc00 and lsb set to cc32) as well as bank select. I'm very new to program changes and i can't seem to figure out what the numbers are for the banks and presets and if I'm even doing it right. anyone use midiflow or if not can point me in the right direction?
