Anyone else on here prefer Caustic to Gadget or vice versa? And why?

I only tested Gadget LE . The Gadget sound is more "pro" and glossy but I liked Caustic flexibility (and price, since I also bought Egoist).
Maybe I got used to it on my android phone first and did not want to learn a new app. The GUI was a bit ugly ,but the "dark" theme is lovely. It is amazing that you can run Caustic on all available mobile and desktop platforms (including Linux, lol).

You could download Gadget LE and try Caustic on your computer (there is also android demo) and check for yourself

  • I mean to be real, for the money, Caustic is amazing. It's half Gadget, half Reason. The biggest obstacle for me - shallow as this may sound - is just the presentation and look/feel of the app. The file loading screens are ugly, it lacks connectivity to the outside world (DropBox, AudioShare, etc.) and basically just needs a facelift. One thing Gadget has going for it - apart from its sounds - is how the devices make you feel when you're using them. They look slick/polished and, maybe it's just me, but that kinda goes a long way to how you feel about making sounds in them. It's a weird psychological thing. Kind of like how I really want Viking for Reason...but am not remotely interested in it for iOS because it looks like it sounds bad haha.

Maybe I'm off on a tangent here but yeah, better connectivity, a re-work of the overall menu/interface style and a new lick of paint for the devices would make Caustic a serious Gadget competitor.

Gotta say though I love its pattern arranger. So few pattern based apps allow you to place patterns that easily. If only it supported MIDI parts in the arranger view too. That'd be perfect!

Anyway, looking forward to the new version. Whenever it lands :)

  • Got rid of Caustic but Gadget still remains. If on a budget though I would recommend Caustic.

Caustic interfaces fine with Audioshare. It's one of the export options and Audioshare files will "Open In" Caustic. You just can't open files from AS from within Caustic right now.

Also, I use the Caustic FTP server and the (free) Documents app by Readdle to send any type of Caustic file to and from Dropbox. That includes songs, skins, presets, samples. It's the only app I have that does that.

The only thing missing right now is Caustic is not running the current AB SDK. It works but you have to be in portrait mode or with home button on left. And the Audioshare SDK needs to be updated for full functionality.

As far as its look, use the Darker skin. It looks great. Or you can make your own.

The current beta should be the final one before release and it will have AB and AS updated.

  • Am a big fan of Caustic: ease and flexibility in one.

  • @chimp_spanner yeah to reiterate what @anickt stated; you can change "skins" on caustic giving it a totally different look and feel!

I agree with this. That's why they call it 'look n feel', but I also agree with the pattern/song thingie. As I lack discipline in the verse.chorus/mid8 department I often come back to Caustic for this very reason, but (for me) its inspirational qualities don't match its structural felicity.

There was some part of AS that wasn't working in the beta but it looks like it's fixed. Looking forward to the final version
