IOS MUSIC APP TRENDS : Observations and Thoughts Thread

It seems far less apps are coming with IPhone capability.

Ironically, it seems the only place apps are being geared to IPhone is Korg.

Business models aside, I would like to see more equity of usage and portability for apps.

Less IPad only apps would be great to see in future. It definitely is a factor if I am choosing between two apps for purchase, that is for sure.

What say you?

    The same!

  • Had no luck finding a sequencer/sketchpad on iPhone that I like so far. It's probably going to be Gadget now, assuming the interface translates without becoming unusable. (Still planning on making my own though).

  • I do want to see more iPhone apps and I actually think we are seeing more iPhones apps now than before. What I don't want is less practical versions of iPad apps on an iPhone with complicated workflows to adjust to the little screen. I would like to see original iPhone apps that use the small screen to their advantage or separate iPhone versions of iPad apps really changed for the differences in screen size (maybe that could be accomplished with universal apps?).

  • I agree with lacm. On balance I would prefer to use an iphone only app at 2x mode rather than a iPad app squished down to fit iphone screen.

It will be interesting to see what image line do with FL studio mobile 3 they say it will behave differently depending on the device being used.

  • From my point of view I'm not too fussed about IPhone apps, other than Impaktor which is the only app I use on my iPhone. Having said that I'd like to see Turnado released for iPhone so I could use to instances of it on my iPad :P.

I always found IPhone's screen too small and the battery too weak for music and communication use. I've tried it twice and both times went back to android as a phone.

  • 99% of my mobile time is ipad so i have pretty much no interest in iphone apps beyond curioisity.

  • Of course, I'm in.

  • I don't have much interest in iPhone apps.
The screen is simply to small.

  • I prefer iPhone apps these days, btu I'm also realistic about what to expect given the screen size. Fun little apps like TriqTraq are perfect, something more complicated like Nanostudio starts to get painful and I'd reach for the iPad.

I'd love to see more iphone apps .... It's a great little music sketch pad.

  • I always have my iPhone with me, wherever I go; only sometimes the iPad. I often have the urge to musically doodle; I often have time to kill. Therefore I want more and better iPhone apps. The things I have tried are a mixed bag indeed. No killer app yet.

Looking forward to your app. Thought MIDI out was important for you? Would be unbelievably sweet if gadget 2 snuck in MIDI out.

  • I dig iPhone apps. Feel like I can make music without it being a 'thing' with regard to space and situation and gear.

Not exactly related but I also feel like the limited screen real estate of the iPhone somehow helps to generate more UI innovations. Triq traq is a perfect example.

Has anyone tried using AB Remote with two iPhone sized devices? Feel like the only consistent bummer with iPhone music apps is the size of the AB panel. It can't really get smaller so it is what it is but very few apps actually have room for it as opposed to the iPad.

  • @syrupcore yes, I do want MIDI out, but since what I want doesn't seem to exist (and I haven't written it yet  ) Gadget is likely going to be the best alternative in the mean time.

  • Syrupcore, exactly. On iPhone music making isn't so much an "official event".. Best ish happens that way

    Smart person you are............. ;)

  • I find IPhone gives cooler and more agile performance on many apps. Thumb Jam / Sprism, and things like that.

Particularly, leads and things like that.

I would like to see ONDES and CHORDION on IPHONE.

    I don't see why not.

Also DOTS or whatever it is proves to me that Patterning is probably possible on IPhone as well.

Hell, if Gadget is due for IPHONE anything could be.

  • Since finishing an album on iPhone a few years back, I've no interest in iPhone apps. I could see an interest in synth apps though, if I were to buy a controller; FX apps as well I suppose; more performance oriented apps. Production apps, such as DAWs, no interest at all.

  • I can't see using something like Auria. I can see using something simple to cat sketches from things like geoshred or thumbjam, (not sure if geoshred runs on the phone, or what it would be like.) The smaller real estate is such an issue, though I know a lot of folks get 6+ phones and liking the combo - it's pretty much killing the iPad mini.

If Devs see their market as iPad, they may not have the incentive to create an iPhone UI. Can also make the case that the majority of people who have an iPad probably have an iPhone, not android. In which case the dev makes no extra money at all from having an iPhone version available, because the client can just download the purchase at not extra cost onto the second device.

  • I made my first ITB productions with nanostudio and garageband iphone.

It sucked but it was fun.

  • To me it's always desirable to get universal apps. The phone is just the most mobile device there is and coupled with actual instruments and controllers it's just very convenient!

    Doubleplus this!

It's nice to have universal. It's also nice to have separate - then you can have both the iPhone and iPad app on the iPad  (although AUs will make that less of an advantage).

I use mainly iPads for music, although I have produced music on the iPhone too, but it's not a big priority for me. More of a "if I don't have the iPad with me but am in a musical creative mood" kind of thing.

Other than that it's not something I'm personally looking for - i.e. more iPhone compatibility. I'd rather have full-screen iPad apps with more real-estate. E.g. TJ I can play 4 instruments at the same time easily with 4 fingers across a larger octave range. Not so easy on an iPhone :)

This is just my personal observation. I have been using my iPhone exclusively for almost a year now, and I think things are better now than when I started. There are still several companies that have iPad-only apps that I would love to see supported on the iPhone, and sequencer/DAW choices are limited, but it really has gotten better in the last few months. Everyone needs to be sure to speak up about the usability of iPhones for audio and show a willingness to pay for apps and support developers who cater to iPhone customers. Over all though, things have been getting better.

I'm beta testing the app and while I can't really say anything, I CAN say that what they say about scalability is correct. You won't be disappointed in that area.

I wouldn't use a regular 4" iPhone either, but it's great on a "plus" model! It's like having an iPad Micro!

I'm not opposed to paying for a separate iPhone version of an app.

Exactly - do it as a paid upgrade.

Money isn't the issue i would love to just use more apps in more ways.

I agree with you on your points nonetheless.
