That's pretty darn cool. Deff. needs Audiobus and IAA.
So, can't find it in the US store. So it's not quite out yet?
Howl: A formant synthesizer by Daniel Clelland
https://appsto.re/us/ivBO_.i
Stupid ipad only gets me on this when I search the store. I saw thread post as demo for ipad, didn't even think to search iphone apps.
Thanks!
well that genuinely different ! good stuff
Mmhhh interesting.... i´m a bit undecided what i think about it yet. I find f.e. the formant filters (and the default vocal patches) in Addictive synth much better but it might be just my first impression.
Thank´s for another interesting video Sir!
Thanks for the heads up.
It's small and free and sounds good... Playing through some pedals is great...
Looks nice ..but no sound on iPad 3.
Working on air 2.
Yeah, this works on my Air 2 but not on my iPhone 6s
Hi, HOWL developer here, sorry for the late reply but currently working on a v2.0! I'm adding iPad support and a few new features but most of all Audiobus support! Please PM me if you'd like to try the TestFlight
I love this app, in theory anyway And am very pleased to hear you're adding AB. It brings out all my 12th century monk tendencies (of which there are many).
Love this! I have re-scored five episodes of "The Twilight Zone" already!
@dclelland: Thanks for checking in! With Audiobus / IAA this could make a great guitar effect. I think (without being a developer) that by adding an envelope follower, some attack/decay control on the vowels, and some way of selecting vowel pairs, you could get close to this awesome pedal:

Any interest?
Folks for whom it's not working - I think it doesn't make any sound when the phone is in silent mode. Hoping to resolve this somehow for v2.0.
@TrustButVerify: I've gone a slightly lazier route - I've rebuilt the formant engine so I could add a two-axis LFO to it:
Goes nicely with a tremolo effect:
Been thinking quite a bit about how I could improve upon this (Ideally would like to be able to specify vowel pairs (or triplets, etc) by simply touching two fingers to the phoneme board) but that might be a v3.0 feature.
Sounds great! Can't wait!
Hi Daniel,
Only just downloaded this gem but I'm loving it. It's possible to make some very nice sounds with it.
I'd love to beta test so am going to PM you now...
Matt
Made me laugh. It's certainly great for getting your monk on.
Great news!
Can anyone give me any insight on how the keyboard works?
How do I get it to be, say an A minor scale?
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 It works using a tone space keyboard. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonnetz
The center diamond is one octave below middle C (I tried middle C, but it seemed too high for a vocal synthesizer).
The intervals are controlled by the 'Left' and 'Right' keyboard dials. By default, pitches go up by four semitones (a major third) for every key you up up and left, and up by seven semitones (a perfect fifth) for every key you go up and right.
When you tap these dials the keys light up to give you a sense of the way things are arranged: hue is the local pitch (C is red, C# is orange, etc) and luminosity is overall pitch, so high notes are light while low notes are dark.
Unfortunately you won't be able to program in a major or minor scale with it though there's all kinds of other things you can do!
Got Audiobus working tonight, I just need to set up the filter port (so we can pump audio from other apps through the vocoder) and then I reckon I'll put the TestFlight out! Thanks to everybody who sent their email addresses in!
Hey, Great work @dclelland!
More coffee, less sleep, keep on.
Thanks. That's helpful. Sorry to be a total pain, but could you list, or point me at the rest:
C=red
C#=orange
D=?
...
Or how I can work that out.
Then I think I'm good... I'll just fiddle until I get the notes/chords I need on there.
EDIT: actually forget that, I've just realised I can set the interval to 1 and that way just have a look for myself - now I know C is red . Sorry!
...although that actually only allows me to see 10 notes, not 12.
Don't suppose there's any way we could have an option to have the notes written on the diamonds?
iPad version ready to go. Will likely send out invites this weekend.
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 I'll try that out tonight, see how it looks.
Looking forward to it....
