The iDS-10 has a basic vocoder that makes it fun to mess with. You get 9 tracks (2 synths, 1 voice, 6 drums). Buying the Plus mode gives you 2 more synths and 1 more voice for a total of 12. It's nowhere near as robust as the iMS-20, but it does have an ease-of-use factor that made me like it when I bought it for the Nintendo DS a few years ago. It's great for small devices and I wish they would adjust the resolution or rearrange the layout to make it fit on an iPad screen- I don't like scrolling through to get to the last 2 knobs and shrinking the layout by 70 percent or so would make everything fit. This is more noticeable and slightly annoying if you buy the IAP and copy from one track to another because the patterns are on different screens.
Anyway as an all-in-one, I still like it, but I'm really hoping they scale down the layout or at least give a checkbox option for those that want it. If you want to mess with a vocoder but aren't sold on this, Caustic looks like the next best thing for the price. Frankly, I think it's a better deal.
I love iDS-10 for when I want to make something very harshly electronic. When I use Gadget I'm too tempted to soften the noise. I find the vocoder is really cool, though I tend not to use it as a vocoder, instead using it as another pseudo-synth. Just bought the plus expansion. Interested to see what I can do with a few more tracks, though I can't help wonder if the joy I've experienced so far wasn't directly as a result of the minimalism. I guess I will find out soon.
I do have note however that, as much fun as it is, it's a really ugly app and the sequencer and arranger are a dreadful POC that only barely meets the label "functional". This is an app that needs a serious GUI improvement pass.
It is fun though.
It was started earlier in the thread that korg does not develop this app, it's another company, although it carries the korg name. I don't have it and it didn't interest me, but just clarifying. Same deal as when we were emailing arturia about issues with imini- that was retronyms and not arturia. And isem was tempo rubato.
Ok.
It is indeed weirdly ironic that the bigger a software publisher gets, the less communication is possible between the publisher and the users. You would think the greater manpower would allow for more responsive customer support but that rarely seems to be the case.
Tony Saunders, J. Liljedahl, the Thumbjam/Drumjam guy (sorry man forgot your name again!) are all 100x more responsive than Korg, Apple, etc.
I don't know why this is the case. All I can do is make music with stuff that works, and abandon stuff that's broke.
OTOH, Korg at least tries once in a while to reach out. Roland and Yamaha are worse in the customer communications dept. But then again, Korg is smaller than the other two...
Can I just say that Lars from steinberg (which must count as one of the big boys) is as responsive as any of the little guys
Sadly responsiveness can also be fleeting look at diode.
It's because in bigger companies there are more processes and bureaucracy to get through. A one-man band doesn't need to have every communication approved by the marketing department before posting, but in a bigger company that's often the reality. Marketing, management, PR, and the tea lady all have to give the OK before any communication is made to the outside world, and engineering is completely shielded from the user and almost certainly not allowed to communicate.
Yes, he is indeed a notable exception.
I'd almost say Geert and Amos of Moog Music but not sure if Moog is a big guy company.
The title of this thread has come around to be accurate again so I’ll revive it.
I have IDS-10 being driven by Rozeta Bassline in AUM but I can only seem to control Synth 1. Is there any way to send MIDI to the vocoder or drums?
Ta.
apart from the 'updated' bit.
Oops. Yes, I can see how that could lead to dashed expectations.
Sorry, won’t do it again. Promise.
Damn I thought the bingo was solved and this app got a new version. I know that the voice synth is on midi channel 5, there is misleading information about the midi channel assignment online.
Drums are on MIDI channel 7 and the iElectribe template seems to work. Wicked!
Surely I can be forgiven for that tasty tidbit?
yr absolutely forgiven ;-) the app store is to blame.
Korg/Detune on the other hand are not, there is a bug in ids-10 that means you have to restore the extra song mode, vocoder and synths IAP EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU OPEN THE APP... how such a simple thing hasn't had an update fix in over a year...? well, mr faux crazy guy @ Detune inc , I've bought every ds10 version that exists , plus versions, US, european & japanese regional DS carts, 3ds online shop and ipad.. i want to see heads rolling y'hear!
I prefer the original on the DS, loved that thing!!
You've gotten me devouring this thread with my breakfast until I realised I was back in the 80s!
So can one plug in a controller and jam away with virtual volcas or was this all indeed just a dream?
I was planning on getting the IAP, thanks for the warning and hope they fix this issue.
