Clip launcher suggestions...
I'm looking for a simple, intuitive clip launcher. So far, I've tried out LP-5 and it seems to fit most of my needs (Ableton-ish rows/columns, MIDI switching, Link, etc.) Anything else I should look at before investing time in LP-5?
Comments
Noisepad (on sale) loaded up with your own samples makes a good alternative.
Also, it is AB-friendly.
Protein der klang (worth checking if it s abandoned or not) and Loopy come to mind
Oh and kYmatica AUM seems to be a clip launcher too, soon !
Launchpad
Thanks for the suggestions, folks, but I do need Link and MIDI controls...
Id stick with LP-5 then.
Modstep
GaradgeBand
EDIT: don't know about if it supports LINK and MIDI control
Can Modstep launch individual midi clips from an external midi source? (Not sure if the OP needed this, but I'm interested in knowing if it can).
You can midi learn clips and Scenes yes, also has Link
Ah, this is the kind of suggestion I was looking for cuz I hadn't considered it at all. Seems like Modstep might be overkill for what I'd use it for, but there are a bunch of features that could be useful for different use cases...

Modstep is far and away the monster clip launcher in iOS right now. Electrify NXT would be the nearest next best thing, but it's off the AppStore right now...might be news there soon but -
This. Modstep and Launchpad is a match made in heaven.
I just discovered by accident that SunVox can act as a clip launcher:
Highlight a pattern in the song mode section, press "play pattern" in the transport, when you tap on another pattern the previous pattern will play to the end and the new one will start playing.
To say SunVox is ridiculously good with unparalleled depth would be an understatement.
Edit: Oops, doesn't have Link yet though, so doesn't match requirements of original request.
Takete.
whichever launcher you decide on, please request 'panning' from the dev.
Yes, it's neat little trick and of course you can have loops of absolutely any length and can add in commands to change the tempo at each pattern.
I did ask about this on the SunVox forum as a feature request. Might be worth adding your own comment to show support?
I actually asked Alexander this directly on FB. He basically countered with "doesn't AB have Link?". I think that is somewhat missing the point though, as I am looking for the sync on all possible levels and controls. I do understand the logistical challenge with Link for an app like SunVox though: we see it as an iOS (or possibly desktop) app. In reality SunVox is, and always has been, supported pretty much exactly the same on all the platforms it supports, and that is a lot of platforms (all of them I think). What would possibly be a quick change on one platform could probably be a nightmare on another, or just redundant (I don't think Link is coming to for example PalmOS anytime soon), and part of the genius behind SunVox surely must be that the code base is well maintained, well kept and well ordered, to keep it all consequent and functional, with only careful additions.
That still doesn't take away my wish for Link sync in SunVox though, but for now I can only wish and hope.
Update: I'm using LP-5 for now. It's simple and easy and mostly works. Someday I'll grow up and tackle Modstep.
I suspected the cross platform nature of SunVox might hamper its chances of getting. It's a little frustrating that SunVox does play so well with other apps, drum apps in particular.
Sorry, playing catch-up here, but is this an answer to alternatives for audio clip launching? Or an answer to "triggering another clip launcher"? Just checking if I need to run through the ModStep manual more thoroughly...I was thinking the sample engine is intended mainly for drums in a "kit", not for hosting/playing audio clips in the Ableton Live way (though that'd be awesome if ModStep did).
You can setup ModStep to work like an audio launcher, load a Sampler instrument with all the samples you wish to use for that particular channel, then create a scene and part for each sample with a single trigger note for the sampler in each, and away you go !
If you have an external launcher that has MIDI In you can do the same thing but rather than loading a sampler instrument just send the MIDI to your clip launcher, if you keep the MIDI notes the same between the ModStep sampler and your external launcher you can swap between the two at your leisure.
You can also map the parts and scenes to MIDI to allow launching from a controller
It is clear I have some experimentation to do. I bought ModStep just after new year, but haven't picked it up until this last week. In my head (or original plan/thinking) I was going in the same direction as the OP here, with using ModStep for all things midi, and then using LP-5 for launching audio clips, all synced together via Link of course, but I should probably start with seeing how far I can take ModStep on its own first! Thanks!
Ah, right. Failing at first hurdle: I can't get the clips/loops/audio I already have in AudioShare in to ModStep. I, perhaps stupidly, assumed import/export when I read AudioShare, but on closer inspection it actually only says "export". I find it odd if I am the first one to miss the AudioShare import function, would anyone know an ETA of that?
You can't import midi clips into modstep either atm.
Ahh yes, I forget that it only does export, iTunes filesharing only for import at the moment. If you are generating your audio from within ModStep you can use the internal record and then send it straight to the sampler and do trimming there, but no snap to beat or anything like that.
My particular setup is using ModStep for sequencing IAA's in AUM, using AUM to record, audioshare to trim, and then loading loops into Launchpad, This does need the Launchpad IAP's for MIDI Clock and Audio import as well as using MIDI Sync Link to get the syncing. If you use LP-5 instead of Launchpad you can use link for direct sync and LP-5 is free. I am using Launchpad primarily because i have a Launchpad controller. If I had external synths i would go 'the extra mile' and import the finished loops into ModStep and do all audio and MIDI Loop launching from there
Yes, potential for audio clip launching in Modstep is all there with the sampler. I think it can handle up to 30 second samples if I remember correctly. I'm hoping they will add better options for getting samples in like Audioshare and audiocopy etc That's the main thing slowing me down using it this way at the moment. I think iTunes or iFunbox is the only way currently to get samples in.
Have you had any issues getting batch import from AudioShare to LP-5? I keep getting an unsupported file error on both folders and a Zip file. I can get it to import if I "Open In" from AudioShare to LP-5.
As a sidenote: It'd be awesome if apps had published roadmaps/plans. It would stop a lot of speculation/guessing and calm people down (not saying anyone here is upset etc, but still).
It could also be a great way of involving the actual target audience/customers and help out prioritizing the to-do list for apps, as well as being a good thing to use as a basis for communication (in particular when a specific feature will not happen, for whatever reason).
This is just a reflection from being in development (though not iOS apps per se) for 20 years. It has always been better, on all levels, when we have communicated the plans of what is coming. It is also better if people talk about what is actually going to come in a positive tone, than them speculating, wishing/guessing, and at times being wrong (which can cause negative comments as a backlash), as most things is about communication and expectation management. If you can communicate regarding expectation management you are on to a winner.
