  • @commonstookie Loading only one kit in Superior Drummer takes 2GB... but the sound is the absolute best. My mac only has 4GB of ram so I can only load one kit so I still have enough ram to use other programs and plugins, plus whatever the os needs. Many audio workstations have 8GB+ installed. Desktop OS's are also much less stingy with ram and will try to make room while iOS will just kill apps to keep from slowing down. I'm sure all of us have frustratingly seen an app we are using just blink off the screen in an instant haha. So we're going to need iPads with a whole lot of ram for that level of multi-sampled velocity layered glory.

I realise memory constraints is a problem in developing sample based drum machines for iOS devices. However, cant understand why there are so few drumsynths available. The only two I can think of are tweakybeat and iElectribe, neither of which are all that great. That is a huge gap in the market right there.

EDIT: and Modrum of course, which sounds kind of thin. Also, the UI leaves much to be desired.

What is the best desktop drum machine?

That ticks (most/all) the boxes in regard to 'the list'?

Could this/these devs be sounded out?

Even if this thing is a while away from being achieved,it would still be nice to make a start..

  • @commonstookie - best drum machine? That is relative. I use BFD by Fxpansion and it IS a killer drum machine. It is my personal favourite, a big hitter, RAM hungry but it rocks out of this world. In England, we say it is the dog's bollocks. There is a baby version called Eco or so and I believe it is on sale now for peanuts.

  • @FrankieJay,thanks.
I ask the question as I'm interested in what could migrate to ios at some point in the near-ish future.
I will look at Fxpansion tho,as I'm sure it is the muts nuts...

Don't forget WeJaam if we're just talking drum apps in general. It does 6 patterns, each pattern can be up to 32 steps and each step can be subdivided by up to 4. It does have a really great randomize function where you can set the amount and probability factors with a slider for each of the six sound slots (a bit like stochastic). Great filters and a nice dynamics/limiter unit on the output. Sure it's a complete groove station with a synth engine and all but nothing's stopping you to just use it as a drummachine. Most sounds are geared towards electronic stuff, but there are some acoustic stuff in there and some jazz and percussion packs available (and you can use your own samples last I looked). Definitely my favourite right now, really fast to get some random drums and percussions going and it just sounds really good.

  • I've always liked the flexibility and "hidden features" in WeJamm and like it a lot

  • Anyone want to partner in my drum app idea....it takes the same functions as ezdrummer/addictive drums/studio drummer...with the same quality and puts it in your hands. I have an interface drawn up, patterns, pattern editor, drag/drop beats, cut/paste/slice, I have a working version that I've ported into another app as a host and it works great although a little cumbersome due to the layout and limitations of the host app. I'll post a clip. I should mention that this is for realistic live drums...not squashed, mangled, or hip hop style drums.

  • Speaking up for @DerekBuddemeyer, because his drum package uses Midi patterns played and recorded live and velocity layered drum samples, it sounds as good as audio loops, while also allowing for the loop to be played at various tempos without artifacts. Best of all, the size will be MUCH smaller, since it is samples managed by midi and not full wav files. All he needs is an app custom designed to put his material in. :-)

    --Sean

  • As it stands though, DerekBuddemeyer's drum package is just a drum library, and not an actual drum machine--so, in order to meet everyone's needs, @DerekBuddemeyer will probably need to have a plan for that part of things too (which he probably does). :-)

  • I am thinking of an added feature of some drum pads that you could load the samples into...although your own specific beats CAN be played out on the keys they are mapped to as well....not very difficult. Heres a sample http://snd.sc/11TzrKi

  • Sounds great - you are a busy guy!

  • @derekbuddemeyer Sounds good but couldn't you interest Positive Grid ( Jamup pro devs) to develop/incorporate a drum machine for guitarists as an IAP. I have been loyal to Jamup since the outset and, as with all my core apps, am more than happy to buy new features for existing core apps that I use regularly than depend or expect free updates - I am sure I am not alone in this.
Regarding recent Jamup updates - I accept tone development is what the developer is concentrating on but hope that is not the long term strategy solely. I am not into metal but would like to think Positive Grid is looking at other areas to satisfy the broad base of its customers. Don't get me wrong Jamup is the best but I do think the app is developing more down the professional heavy metal guitarist route. Surely there is a market for bolting on audio/drum/daw studio etc ISPs specifically for the real-time guitar player( which can also include heavy metal!) who is an enthusiastic amateur as well.

  • IK did that in Amplitude and everyone went "Meh...".

  • @ChrisG Thanks for that tip about WeJaam. I've been using it as a drum machine. It is very flexible, and lots of features.

  • I am talking shop with devs....drum app is in the works...more later when I can.

  • Sounds great Derek. Can't wait.

  • Fxpansion should try to join the game as Propellerhead is doing.
    BFD is THE drum software!
I've been using this since it was released and no one can tell the difference from real recorded drums if it's well programmed and processed, even drummers.
Of course the limited power of the iPad is a big problem for this (as it is now, but we know the future, right?), but something close to the language used in BFD would be heaven, even if released in a "lite" form now.

Well, whatever is released will be very welcome, as we still don't have a good acoustic drums app.

  • Have mailed BFD with the link to this thread.
    Fingers crossed.

  • Answer from devs....

I\'m afraid there is currently nothing in the pipeline with regards to porting BFD over to iOS.

However, we have recently ported our EnvShaper to the tablet platform as an external plugin for Auria with some success.

With this in mind iOS development is not something that we are ruling out for the future and we are aware that many of our users are big fans of BFD; so it is definitely something we would consider.

  • We should all just harass all the top desktop drum vst makers until we get what we want!

"What do we want? A killer drum app! When do we want it? NOW!!!!!!!"

  • +1 for @JMSexton .... haha....

  • Hey guys, our upcoming Drumfire app sounds like the answer to most of your mobile drumming needs... The app is in early beta and feature requests are still welcome

  • What features will it have from the list in the original post?

  • @Amidio Does Drumfire have a probability feature. Thank you.

  • And has approximately zero of the features requested...

  • I still like Different Drummer, and it does have some of the features requested, plus the dev updates very often. Also, like @Flo26 said, it has some great features beyond what was requested.

  • Love to check it out @Flo26. Can you pm me with the link?

  • Sorry @Flo26, but I couldn't find anything. I sent you a pm. Just check your inbox (link at the top of the forum.)

  • Sorry about the hijack @PaulB.
