Is this the future of ipad music production storage?

I was at fb and saw these devices and I wondered if any of our members, have used them for our purposes...

  • No idea what the exchange rate is from dollars to PH, but could def. find a use for some of these...

  • couple of auria pro cats already using the sandisk drive ...

  • As long as Apple keeps the space limit to 128GB, this is something I am keenly interested in. I've looked at a few of the wireless solutions, and in _theory_Auria Pro should work with them, but haven't seen much feedback as of yet. I'd prefer something where I could insert a smart card of my choosing and then store those as my "master tapes" once a project is completed.

As it is, my Air 1 128 has been holding steady around 10GB of free space ... will definitely need a solution soon.

  • It really depends on what files they can access. Because Caustic has an FTP server built in, I can send its files anywhere. Other apps may give you access to Dropbox or other cloud storage but they are all somewhat different which can be frustrating. I'd like to see all apps at least give full access to all user files to send/receive to cloud storage at a minimum. I don't want to be tethered to my laptop.

File access with some kind of consistency would make these kinds of devices even more useful.

It's not the future, it's now. I've had a SanDisk iXpand Flashdrive for a while now...works across all my iOS devices which include a couple different iOS versions. I mostly use it from AudioShare but it is in the "open in" list for apps that use that feature. Also Cubasis now allows a direct copy to the iXpand of a Cubasis project file (very handy since I have Cubase on desktop).

Should be able to snag something for around $50 at Amazon.

  • Is lightning connection here for a while? We can assume it will be around a long time yes?

It's Apple, so with their track record I would say no. But I've got an older 30pin Audio interface that works fine with a lightening adapter, so there's that.

I have an AirStash wifi drive. Comes with 8GB, but the storage is SD card. It'll support up to 128GB cards. As a photographer, I've got loads of SD cards laying around so it made sense. As soon as you fill up a card, just pop another one in and keep going. I also use it to transfer audio and video from camera and portable audio devices to iPad or iPhone. I've also got the Apple Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader which is obviously faster for transfer, but for low cost, convenient mobile storage, I've been happy with it.

It's also USB, so if I'm on the road I can transfer using the USB port or when I'm at home use the USB for faster transfer.

I didn't pay as much as they're asking now. I think I got it a little South of $100US delivered on-sale a couple years ago. It's been solid, stable, and they update the app and firmware regularly.

It's not the fastest, but it'll also stream stored music + video right off the device.

  • Thanks for the details/experience @TozBourne and @skiphunt

Still waiting for the iPads to catch up to 2005 iPods in terms of storage capacity.

I think their storage wasn't real but more like:"You can compress thousands oF GBs in just 8" kind of way.

That's not the devs restricting things. That's Apple. No app can access the storage of another app. Not changing any time soon.

  • I recently found that I can stick a thumbdrive or ad card reader in my wireless routers use port, and use the named- Doucuments- to wirelessly transfer audio files to and from the memory thumbdrive. its great. I simple load an audio sample into Documents, from my memory stick wirelessly, and then use the Open-in function to open it in any app I want. it's awesome.

Was thinking about getting some external storage, hadn't thought about doing it this way though, I wonder if it will work with an airport time capsule.

  • These are cool, but they con't always connect well if you use a case.

Im pretty sure. The Documents app picks up stuff on the wireless network around you. it should be able to access the time capsule.

  • I must admit I have no idea how my iPad storage works. I have a 16gb mini 2, and for ages I have been almost at the storage limit, and yet the total of all my apps is nowhere near even 5gb. And then, today, I have 6gb free. No idea where that has come from.

  • I only have a 16gb Air- and unless I download too many big games I usually have at least 2gb free even with all my music apps- but I don't keep many files on my iiPad- that is what dropbox is for-

Set up my atc with an external hd plugged in the usb, made sure I was on the atc network, but was trying to access my hd through the file sharing options in music apps, then read your comment again and saw I needed the documents app, so I d/l documents 5, just about to start the process of setting up.

Thanks again for suggesting this eross, I'm down to my last 5gb on an 128gb ipad and haven't even started making any serious music yet, was constantly at it on my ipad 1 then my 3, I feel an ipad music rampage brewing deep with in me.

If you have an iPhone and an iPad that can do airdrop, you can store on your iPhone. Use goodreader or audioshare, in auria (or other app that supports it), open in the other app, then with the same app open on iPhone, airdrop it. Then delete the copy from audioshare or goodreader on iPad. Works in reverse too. Airdrop is Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi, do you can do it anywhere.

Not a long term solution, but good if you're on the go and need to free up space in auria...

As I said I can access all of Caustic's files through its FTP server with the Document5 app and send them anyplace including to Dropbox. If a dev implemented an FTP server it seems to me that would be helpful. Some other music apps have had FTP servers.

  • It's a shame Apple never made a SD slot for Pro(maybe Pro only). Or what they could of done me is made/release an Apple special version of a SD card(Apple SD) so you can use it Only on IOS. But is there Method in there madness? Once you use iCloud storage up, you have to rent more space(virtual SD card of sorts)? Then, tho cheaply, they gain more monies in the long run on monthly payments. But, it would be better for the user to buy more Apple SD cards..... Microsoft Surface has a SD port, so do other devices. Only Apple IOS devices do not. Sometimes I can't see there logic.. But, hey Ho. You want to do stuff(music/ Art, etc) you definatlely need a 128 go device to be safe.

  • The key for me if using cloud based storage is the interaction and disruption in workflow.

If i have my sample library in the cloud can i preview my sounds as my track plays?

How many steps does it add to my workflow?

  • edited February 2016

I have investigated these on Amazon and they're pretty competitively priced compared to other storage options (SD cards, USB drives, external HD). Auria Pro plays nice with these, even though Auria has long had Dropbox integration. I am just a sucker for physical media, especially with my songs & projects; plus you never know. Dropbox could go tits up and then how easy would getting data from their servers be then?

Ohh, looks very interesting, like how it supports time capsule, want to unload my photo library but still have access like it was on device. Think l'll pick this up and try out a few different options, see what works best, might even give icloud drive a go, altho it gave me the fear when I thought about activating it before. Thanks for the heads up BiancaNeve.

Some very useful info, like the idea of something portable like that hootoo tripmate price is nice too, find some hotel's wifi access to be very invasive, cheers for the link miguelmarcos.
