Thanks for the reviews! It really helps.
Will sure leave a review
Here is a quick demo video i put together.
Great vid! I'm glad that people can figure it out so easily. And FYI, you can drag your finger across the steps on the grid to light them up instead of tapping each one.
Just wondered how slickly beat machine handled my samples ?
If I wanted to drop a couple of thousand various percussion samples into it to craft some great kits...
1/ how do I get the samples in ?
2/ how do I preview each of the samples within the app before loading them into the kit ?
3/ will the samples show in folders as I preview them ?
4/ will beat machine remember where I last browsed through my samples ?
This was one of the reasons I deleted DM1 as the import/preview functionality was very laboured and frustrating, never liked that app......all style and not much substance.
It's not that slick yet, but it's on my list I swear. Well it does everything but folders so far. So I wouldn't recommend putting in a few thousand samples. Samples are added through iTunes or a program called iFunBox. There is a preview button next to each sample when browsing through them so you can listen to each one. I'm probably going to add dropbox support at the same time as folder support.
Thanks @dreamless the app looks really good by the way after watching @Ryan's video.
Would be great if the sample browser had folders, so much easier when building custom kits in my experience. Great that it auditions samples before loading in.
@dreamless I reinstalled Beat Machine and its triggering other apps while in the background playing. The thing is virtual midi is off. Please advise.
@dreamless Also, while we're talking about issues, is there a way to tune the app to run more efficiently? I get a lot of stuttering and high CPU usage when comparing it to other drum sampler/sequencers. It actually probably uses the most CPU of all the drum sampler/sequencers I have. Think of this as more of a Feature Request. :-) Thanks again for all you do! :-)
+1 for lower cpu usage.
Ee er erm He Clears his throat and says hopefully " I'm still waiting for the swing update to arrive "
@mgmg4871 did you reinstall from the App Store or from iCloud? I had some users who were installing v1.2 from a backup which was causing problems. I made some midi fixes in v1.2.1.
I reinstalled from the App Store. I'll try again. Thanks.
@dreamless I reinstalled from App Store and get same results.
Ok I'll check it out. Are you running any apps that hijack core midi and use it internally like virtual midi? Some apps can do this and core midi is always on even with no cables attached. I can submit an update tomorrow, it just won't be the big update that I've been working on. It will have: measure copy, swing, and now you can load samples of any sample rate 16/24 bit. 44.1, 96, 22, 11 it doesn't matter! I'll test virtual midi tonight before I submit tomorrow. Just been busy with my new app and an overhaul of Beat-Machine. And I moved to a new place.
@Dreamless I tested with Sunrizer, Samplewiz, and Alchemy. They all had same result. Thanks.
@Dreamless Update sounds good, thanks. Can you reveal anything about your new app?
@SpookyZoo @dreamless has mentioned in another thread that he is working on a Guitar app,I
Remember thinking I'm already jumping between Guitarism and Pearl Guitar and this could confuse me even more.
It's a guitar synthesizer. Yonac has one called SHREDDER. When I first started my app it was pretty similar to shredder, but I recently improved the tracking to a point where it is quite a bit better than shredder, which has poor tracking in comparison. My app, Jam Synth, can accurately track string bends and vibratos and picking dynamics which are then applied to the synth sound for a very unique affect. It also uses phase distortion synthesis which doesn't seem to be represented on the App Store. It's also going to be priced low like Beat-Machine to make it more accessible than guitar synths have been in the past. They typically have had a bad reputation with guitarists because they are expensive for what they do. But iOS has changed that for all of us! Here is a feature list:
Audiobus (duh)
Very accurate pitch tracking / built in tuner
Input gate / compressor / adsr / filter to help fine tune the input signal for better tracking
3 phase distortion oscillators with volume / detune / filter / octave and 8 selectable waveforms (saw, square, pulse, sine pulse, half sine + 3 resonant waveforms)
LFO with saw, square, pulse, sine pulse, half sine shapes that can be applied to volume, pitch, or filter. And you can invert the waveforms for a different sound.
Stereo delay with filter (like a boss dd-5 or dd-6)
Stereo 3D chorus (I copied the schematic for the Roland dimension d)
I might include the concert hall reverb from Beat-Machine
Looking forward to that @dreamless. Any news on swing for Beat-Machine-(tried all
my drum apps the other day & liked yours best - apart from that omission!)
Swing is in the new version. I submitted it yesterday. I started an overhaul of Beat-Machine but it has been taking a while since I've been working on a new app. So for now there will be an intermediate update with some feature requests like swing and measure copy.
@dreamless This is great news! Thank you! With your Beat-Machine rewrite, are you also going to focus on application efficiency? Beat-Machine has all of the main things I need, but my system can't seem to run it at the same time as my DAW without stuttering.
Which DAW is that?
I'm having a issue with almost anything running in the background with BeatMachine.
@PaulB I understand what your getting at but regardless of the DAW, it does seem Beat Machine uses a decent amount of CPU. If run it with high-quality mode off, latency at medium, and sample-rate at 44.1 it hovers at 14% without touching a thing and nothing else opened. I started playing a heavier sequence using only the bottom 8 pads and it stayed around 45%
@PaulB It is with Cubasis. However, it needs to be understood that I am able to run every other drum machine without stuttering. This includes DM1, Molten, Modrum, Easybeats 3 Pro, Funkbox, etc. The CPU usage meter in Beat-Machine shows usage between 78-99%. Beat-Machine is one of only three drum machines that has almost all of the features I am looking for (DM1 and Easybeats 3 Pro being the other two). Beat-Machine syncs with Cubasis, unlike DM1 and Easybeats 3 Pro, so it is the closest thing I have to perfection. :-) I'm just hoping that the rewrite will make things work more easy on the resources. :-)
Have you tried turning off Stuttering in the settings?
Lol! :-)
It does run a little faster because the GUI has been consolidated, but it isn't an enormous improvement. I did look into rewriting the audio engine and it pretty much made me want to create another app out of the new engine I would create. If I made an XL version of Beat-Machine it would definitely need a new audio engine, then I suppose that engine could be back ported to Beat-Machine. If anyone knows how this works then feel free to teach me:
https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/Accelerate/Reference/vDSPRef/Reference/reference.html
The reference is about as useful as the Core Midi reference for developers (i.e. not useful at all). But it is the answer to high performance audio!
@Dreamless - There is also the "Amazing Audio Engine" made by Michael one of the Audiobus developers
