I don't record audio on an iPad. I use synths, samples, and all sequencing. I'd imagine it's easier to record audio. Don't you just need one app to record your performances? Maybe go through some effects?
Gadget is a nice example of simplicity. I can make music within one app, fairly complete, then export. But what if you want to use all your music apps in the process of building a piece of music? Isn't that what many of us want to do, whether we also record audio or not? That's where it gets hairy, and why we wish it would all get sorted.
It was hard to make a choice as I usually hover between 1 & 2, always like to have a live section to my sequenced tracks, to give it more of a loose feel.
I'm quite happy with the progress of apps for iOS music making and playing.
The thing I would like to see more of is more iOS specific hardware controllers.
AUM would be ideal expanded as a software interface for a specific hardware controller.
I would like two controllers that can be connected to become one. A keyboard controller with sliders and knobs. A drum pad controller with sliders and knobs. They connect together and communicate directly with the midi settings in AUM and Audiobus. Direct switches to jump between set ups for each app.
Much to the disgust of many synth heads, they should be small and portable, but high quality. Karp key size should be fine, but high Res pots and long throw faders to get the sweet spots.
There's nothing controversial about this topic at all. I've been thinking about this a ton after realizing that AUM will not natively control gadget without adding an additional app to the mix. At first I blamed @j_liljedahl but I understand his philosophy in not supporting midi clock since it's not particularly reliable and causes drifting (auria will control Gadget, and that's precisely what happens). Then I thought about blaming Korg for only supporting midi clock, but midi clock has been the standard for 30+ years, and it's just that, a standard.
Here's where I think it comes from: The sandboxed nature of apps in this ecosystem means we use them differently than we would in a traditional desktop environment. On the desktop, you're rarely going to load FL Studio inside of Live. Instead, in most cases, you'll have your host DAW, and load up all of your synths / effects as AUs or VSTs, that's a relatively easy scenario to sync up whether performing or tracking. On iOS, you have things that might be sequencers and hosts, or maybe they're synths. Maybe you just want to load up Auria just to get a particular sound out of one of the built in synths, but already have a drum track sequenced in elastic drums, a and some layered synths in gadget. As @lovadamusic said, that's where it gets hairy. But the only two choices devs can make is 1) choose a standard and stick by it, or 2) support everything and hope for the best. But I don't think it's a question of developer focus, I think it's just making choices on how to best sort it. Doesn't the Audiobus team have a sync engine developed separately from Link that can be implemented by devs?
This makes me lust after the Squarp a little less. Can I ask 1) why you start in Gadget and 2) how you use the Squarp in the creative part of the process? I'm assuming it's more than a MIDI file player!
Write an email to Ableton urging them to include basic transport control information in Link.
The majority of AB forum poll responders !== majority of users.
Syrupcore.boolean=true
And yet, as the poll continues, the numbers in the first category continue to rise. What are we at at this point? 34 votes and 62.44%? It tells me that I'm not alone in my particular work process...
Step aside for THE RAVEN PARADOX young man....
Look, I don't know want to sound contrary, I'm just seeking solutions. The desktop world doesn't have this problem and after this many years, the iOS world shouldn't either. I think we are on the verge of resolving these issues with IAA/AU and Audiobus/AUM/Link. I'm just trying to raise awareness of the sequencer-based work process needs.
The point syrupcore made was that probably the audiobus forum not exactly the most representative place to drop a poll like this. It's like going to NAMM asking how many of the visitors are somehow involved in the industry
Me neither want to sound contrary. But I think "this many years" are really a few. Computer music ITB with big names associated to it is not older than 5 years, the underground scene was there sometime before, vst 2.0 format is from 99. Cubase was released 10 years before as a midi only sequencer. It took somewhere between 20 to 30 years for computer musicians to be able to do full releases ITB. For now as long as mobiles will be mostly considered as consumer products rather than production of any kind, with low prices software and so on, no one with the proper resources will invest much in such a niche market but for some pioneers. Which most of them are here in this forum.
I recognize that. I just figured since (in my opinion anyway) the Audiobus forum has been a major hub, it would be a great place to start.... I can see that I must be in the minority, so I'll just drop it... We wouldn't want to claim that an apple gives further evidence that all Ravens are black, now would we @JohnnyGoodyear ?
All good. Honest discourse with no malevolent intent etc. I think, amongst the inevitable chaff, there's always some invaluable wheat for developers here etc.
I can't answer the poll, because my method is not in there. Start off on guitar, get some pieces, enter them into notion, finish composing in Notion, export midi, import into Auria Pro, rerecord a bunch of the parts live, mix and master in Auria.
I would also say that it's a bit silly demanding the devs pay attention and respond. If someone sees a need to be fulfilled, and can make money at it, they will. They have written other things.
It's not that you're alone. You're not. Indeed, I don't think many people would be anti the sort of features you'd like to see in apps. But just say what you mean and want instead of thinking that the results of a poll conducted among a narrow sample group somehow adds gusto to your request(s).
If you ask 100 Egyptian children if they like Madonna and 85% of them answer "I've never heard of her", you wouldn't say "See, most Africans have never heard of Madonna!".
. I've very happy with Audiobus!! It would be nice to see transport controls (start, stop, record, rewind) added to Audiobus though..... That would be VERY helpful!
Your method intrigues me. There was a time I used to write my songs (and also arrangements for others) using Finale on my Desktop and export the MIDI file to my DAW. I have know for a while a similar solution existed in iOS, but I'm yet to try it. Are you satisfied?
Absolutely. Presonus bought Notion and continues to enhance it. They just came out with a major upgrade to use hand writing. Some bugs, but they are also very responsive to bug reports. I very much enjoy it.
@rickwaugh I am fascinated by Notion. Pleased I bought it and the IAPs, but don't find it that easy digitally (literally, with my fingers) to use. I am hoping that this is a matter of some more dedicated practice. Can you confirm, at least in your experience, that the input gets easier?
@JohnnyGoodyear, zoom is your friend. Do the "reverse" pinch, get down to the measure, and it's a lot easier. If I do get a note in incorrectly, tap on it and drag it up or down.
iPad pro+pencil and notion is truly a wonderful experience.
Had some thoughts about the niche market:
actually is not asking Apple or devs that we will speed up the whole project of mobile music. We as musicians, producers, engineers, recorders, developers should focus on the tools we already have to drop some quality music, actually marketing our niche. Having some n1 hit made and played live on mobile, a rising star of mixing and mastering going Auria only and other things like this will convince many more investors of the huge occasion that lies in the mobile music market.
@iconnactic: How do you use Garageband and Auria pro in tandem?
Will try, thank you.
Yes, pro+pencil; another reason to keep saving the pennies. As for your 'marketing by success' you're probably right. Tubular Bells crossover for the iPad generation making specific use of the touch screen and knocking the socks off the uninitiated would do it...
....slightly detuned iSem.......
....distorted GeoShed......
....tubular Mersenne !
@Telstar5 for example, this song was made with GB iOS, using the Drummer tool btw. Then I soloed each track and opened them in AP using Share/Open In. Then I added a few more parts, mixed it down and opened a project with the resulting wave file, and applied EQ and loudness to finish it.
mostly 2 but a bit of 1 form me lol! I love to jam out a track live and then edit and overdub it down on garage band. this is why im'm absolutely loving aum as its given me tons of new options to play with )
IPhone 6S plus is my field recorder, midi controller and of course a great sound source to feed Logic Pro X and hybrid synths like Omnisphere and Falcon!
I still like to do here and there 100% iPhone productions but some proper FX and a big DAW can put it just a level higher.
Maybe NanoStudio 2 could be worth to buy an iPad in near future again!
