Amazingly (or not :)) I have never done this. When you say 'set a loop length/export a few bars' do you mean highlight a certain section and copy that to the pasteboard or is there some cleverer trick you're using? Forgive my foggy morning head. It's been raining for days here in Austin, most unusual.

    1) Set the snapping in Auria to "bars".

    2) Double-tap at the top of the timeline (on the black bar where the measure numbers are) and draw out a locator range, you will see the blue highlight over the timeline. Set it to the number of bars you wish to export.

    3) Go to Menu --> Mixdown, and make sure to set "Locator Range Only" and "Audioshare" as your destination. This will export the whole mix for the loop region you've defined straight into Audioshare. A good thing to do is to add the BPM at the end of the file name, for example "My Song Chorus 100bpm".

    4) Close Auria, launch AUM, create a new track set to the File Player, assign your exported mixdown as the file, set it to loop. Set your bpm in AUM to match your project and the file player will loop it perfectly (it uses the bpm number in your file name to loop sync).

    5) Add new tracks and record. Once you're happy just copy and paste the new recordings from Audioshare back into Auria.

Brilliant. It is so often one h'appoth of tar -albeit intellectual paucity rather than economic- that leads me to miss out on some important area of facility or trick. In this case "Locator Range Only" which are three words I've seen a thousand times, but for all I cared or paid attention might as well read "Possum Bottom Available". Odd that we pass by functions and capabilities in apps that were obviously designed to make our life easier...

    Thanks much.

  • I've been slowly exploring AUM and one of the things I like about it so far is the file player and how it will sync the tempo of the file to the "project" tempo. That said, it would be nice if there were an option to time-stretch the audio files without pitch shifting.

I'm having trouble understanding #4? particularly this part: _create a new track set to the File Player, assign your exported mixdown as the file, set it to loop. _

Maybe cuz I haven't used AUM a lot. Just messing around a bit with it. Create a new track in AUM? Or Auria? File player is in AUM? Assign exported mixdown as the file, is this like naming the file, or something different.

    Thanks!

In AUM you tap the + button to create a new track/channel, then in the circle at the top of the fader you need to assign an input, in this case you select the File Player. Once the file is loaded if you tap on it's icon at the top of the channel (same place as for assigning) you can then set loop and sync options.

This app shines even more with a midi controller plugged in, I am now searching for one that has a keyboard and fader/knobs while still being small, and maybe Bluetooth ?
Also, with the upcoming update it will be even better! (Loop record...)

I'm using a Samson Graphite M25, it's very small, two octaves of keys, 8 knobs, 4 trigger pads. It was cheap, and feels a bit plastic, but works fine! :)

@Hmtx agreed. The filters are especially lovely

Re: discussion about recording loops in Auria and other places - one of the things first on @j_liljedahl's update list is to record fixed length loops. This will remove a step in the process and be a great workflow enhancement IMO. It's my understanding that fixed length loops will automatically get stored in AudioShare and could easily be brought back in to AUM's file player for further manipulation.

That's right, I implemented this feature today actually! Still needs some fixes, but it's mostly done.
Note however that it's not recording fixed lengths, but it quantizes the rec start and end to the next "sync quantum" (default 1 bar). So you can record any exact multiple of bars. (And the length of one bar is of course set with the time signature).

The forthcoming 'loop record' sounds sweet, but a shame no midi clock send will happen.

    From my FAQ (http://kymatica.com/aum#faq):

AUM does not use MIDI clock, since it's an old technology that is close to impossible to implement correctly and consistently across apps. There's no reason to continue using it when we have Inter-App Audio host sync and Ableton Link. Therefore I don't want to encourage developers to continue using MIDI clock.
Inter-App Audio apps should implement host sync, which has been part of the IAA standard from the beginning, and is the natural way for a node to sync to the host (AUM in this case).
However, you can use apps like "Link to MIDI" or "MIDI Link Sync" to act as a bridge between Ableton Link (with Link enabled in AUM) and other apps/hardware via MIDI clock.

That would be nice, I agree. And I will investigate the possibilities for future updates. However, it's a quite complicated task, and I'm not sure I ever heard a time-stretch that didn't ruin the original sound completely (which might be a good thing too, of course)..

  • Thanks again @j_liljedahl

Love me some Audioshare and I'm sure AUM will fit in nicely

  • I felt that way at the initial announcement, then I looked closer at features and thought about the possibilities and boy am I glad I bought it. For me, its design takes away so much of the friction on ios and allows me to combine the synths I have along with stored sounds in audioshare in a very multi-dimensional way. Super immersive and fun to get lost in and such a bonus the way it records sessions into audioshare. Can't wait for that new loop record feature. @j_liljedahl any beta slots?

Link is certainly cool for keeping live jams in sync but I was interested in using Aum for recording my Novation Circuit patterns with accurate pattern breaks. I am not sure if using Link to Midi with Aum and the Circuit would accomplish this with the workflow I would want. maybe it would though... Hmmm.

  • I am loving AUM very much. It even lets me use my experimental WLAN-network-Midi-setup again (which doesn't work with AB anymore, sadly...), all is beautiful, and I only just started diving into it. Thank you for this, Sir!

  • @j_liljedahl I figured it's not the easiest thing to implement. Thanks for responding!

Check out Loopy HD! It does a really good job with transparent time-stretching of loops. Maybe you could use the same algorithms?

  • edited March 2016

I bought the app first day it went up 'cuz it was a couple of bucks and I am new to iFruit and its walled garden.

I Looked at the manual and played with it but it is definitely something I will not use for any thing substantial. It looks like audiobus.

It looks cool and I suspect as the ev opens up the throttle and adds more features, I may revisit the app...

I know Michael is always hunting for the perfect time-stretching algo, however he has a bit different kind of budget (since Loopy was on TV) ;)

But personally I find also the stretching in Loopy to ruin the sound quite a lot. Transients are gone and it gets a bit smeared spectral EAM/soundart sounding... which can be nice too, of course, but maybe not my definition of perfect time stretching.

Do you mean it looks like Audiobus visually, or functionality wise? I agree it overlaps a bit with Audiobus regarding the ability to connect stuff together, but have a bit of trouble understanding that you think it lacks features. Apart from connecting apps together, it also has:

    • A mixer (level, mute, solo, etc)
    • Link synced transport clock
    • IAA hosting
    • Audio Unit extension hosting
    • Support for multichannel audio interfaces (both input and output)
    • Flexible audio routing with mix busses and sends
    • Multitrack recording
    • Tempo synced file/loop players
    • Full MIDI control
    • Built in MIDI keyboard
    • MIDI control of hosted AU extension parameters
    • Flexible MIDI matrix routing
    • Built in signal processing nodes such as:
    • Stereo balance
    • Stereo to mono
    • Stereo panning
    • Mid/Side balance
    • Mid/Side to/from Stereo convert
    • Invert phase
    • Parametric EQ
    • Low-shelf filter
    • High-shelf filter
    • Low-pass resonant filter
    • High-pass resonant filter
    • Gain
    • Hard clip
    • Saturation
    • Lookahead peak limiter

Any particular feature you think should be added?

Absolutely love this thing as a super simple, rough-and-ready multitracker. Record stuff, it's in Audioshare and I don't even need to open it. Setup a file player track for playback of what I just recorded is like bouncing tracks, bus everything for a quick master mix.

The dynamics and pre/post options for sound processing along with the other IAA/AU options are extremely nice too.

    Here here.

I think AUM's a wonder and would be very upset now if I woke up to find I had dreamt it :) Being a simple fool, I would like to be able to paste whatever's on the clipboard straight into an empty track, rather than saving it to AS (or wherever) and then opening it from there, but being a simple fool maybe you can do this already and I just haven't figured out how :)

Perhaps, at least in theory, but I think the only problem (if it is one at all) with AS is getting people to start using it. I can't think of another app, really, that most people who have it would absolutely fight you for if you tried to take it back from them now. The fact that Apple haven't absorbed it (and you) yet is an ongoing puzzle to me.

I'm in this camp. I didn't use AudioShare until I started using AUM, and now I'm glad I have both. I managed OK without AS, but iOS music life is so much easier with it now. And while I've bumped up against the urge to copy/paste into AUM, I'm glad I was forced into finally buying AS.

  • Thank you so much. I still believe though, this app is so worth it at the regular price. I'll be getting an iTunes card and buy it at full price because great devs and great apps deserve all the support we can give.

There should be an app (or more) that has special button marked “fruition”. Not sure what the fruition button should do, but it’d be there.
