Modstep: Yet another question.............................
Is there a particular order in opening apps when using Modstep?
For instance, I want to use Modstep.
Should I open Modstep in Audiobus or not?
I want to use, say, Animoog, Boom909, and Korg Module. Suppose, I want to use Soundprism Pro. I will be using my hand to play it so do I involve that in the Modstep set up at all?
What apps should I open when?
Also, ISpark app. Can that be used with Modstep or does it crackle like it did for me ?Or was it I opened things in wrong order?
I am finally trying this app after letting shelf since the day 1 it released when I bought it.
Thanks
Comments
Main thing that could possibly be affected by opening apps in a different order is the buffer size, the first app opened dictates which buffer size is used. I have all but eliminated the crackle by using buffer size 512 on iPad Mini 2.
What you open within what is largely decided by what you want to do at the time
There is no 'correct' way, just use the method that achieves what you want with using the least apps possible and watch out for that buffer size
Thanks Andrew.
Until tonight I never knew Modstep recorded IAA audio.
Wow.
I feel dumb.
I've still yet to find my happy place with Modstep and I can't help but feel like it's partially because of this kitchen sink approach. Why in the world does it record IAA audio? I mean, I get why and I'm sure it's a great feature for those who "get it" but damn I wish that implementation time was spent on making the actual MIDI sequencer great(er) instead.
I absolutely love how it can record pefectly cropped IAA patterns. That is what it is all about for me.
See!
Is there a video of this?

ATM I mainly use ModStep as MIDI Only and use AUM for audio routing and recording and agree that when the IAA hosting and mixing came in it seemed wierd, but them perhaps it is needed because of IAA host sync.
How do you do this, I can record, but perfectly cropped ?
I dont know of a specific video but if you tap the tape cassette button while modstep is playing it only begins to record (turns into a red dot with a time counter) when the next group of bars begins. Now notice when it is playing back and recording if you tap the red dot with the timer that a white circle apears around it. This is the time remaining until the end of the current bar group when recording will stop. They then show up in the recordings folder perfectly cropped ready for export to audioshare.
WOW I didn't know this, Ive been recording into AUM and trimming the end off in AudioShare
Cheers dude another laborious step removed from my workflow
I've been pressing record first, and then play
Cool, glad to hear. I love how I can record Egoist, Animoog and Patterning (with Effectrix and Turnado too) all at the same time to seperate tracks. No messy setup, just works!
I just finished a process where I went through my ModStep projects, unload all the IAA's and created a corresponding AUM project and loaded the IAA's in there instead.
But thankfuly with all those hands it only took half as long.
Hehehe. I'm thinking it hasn't been a total waste of time, because once recorded I am loading the audio into a fileplayer an unloading the IAA in AUM anyway which helps keep the CPU usage down. I'll carry on doing this, but thanks to your hot tip the recording process will be much quicker and less app switching and usage of fingers required
I'm face palming myself for never having seen this before.
That is bad ass. Thanks for this.
This changes everything!
I feel stupid now. But thanks.
This is the feature, in the app, that's keeping me on iOS these days.
And the update-to-be is even more so...
Thanks, I was looking for this kind of feature...But I don't have Modstep...Buying this only for this feature is a bit boring.
Also it does not support Link...
What I wanted to do is to record perfectly cropped loops using Audiobus / patterning, elastic drums, gadget , everything is redirected into AUM for the mixer.
I wanted first to redirect each AUM out to Cubasis, but it crash, I must do something wrong...
But I would prefer to export some cropped loops and then import into Cubasis to finalise.
I tink I've read that AUM will integrate that cropped loops feature soon, right ???
@crony
Modstep does support Link
@Littlewoodg
I was on the manual, and just see this...Thanks...
It's not referenced as Link compliant here...

OMG Modstep is a killer app...
It worked for me once but not sure if i tried it with last update.
OMG Modstep is a killer app...
Well, new app bought...But it's too late for me to get the proper trick for recording...
Videos would be very useful...
EDIT : OMG (twice) this is really a MASSIVE one...!!!!!!!!!!!
Best $20 I've spent in iOS, (and there's a lot of amazing $20 items in iOS music). And the stuff that's coming for this is just sick. For me at least this is the new iOS DAW paradigm.
Have you got more infos on what's coming ???
I'm on the beta and I'm not sure how cool the team would be about my spilling the beans. They've been ultra accommodating to users here on the forum, myself included, so I don't want to put them in a bad spot. Suffice it to say the power of this thing at least doubles in the next update, and I feel like a thief only paying $20
New update coming is really good! I agree, this is becoming a sequencer DAW which is built around the touch screen, works in the box or with external hardware, love where it's going. This and AUM are currently my most used apps.
Ok, thanks, I'll be patient so...
