Good sitar samples or synthesis?
I'm looking to get a sitar sound for a song I'm working on. Ideally, some decent samples would work best but I'll settle for some decent synthesis if it comes to it... Suggestions?
Comments
Geoshred?
Samvada is free. Bismark bs-16i or Soundfont have sitar soundfonts in them, if I recall. Gestrument also has a sitar, I believe.
Seline Redux has a Plucked Sitar preset, but it sounds weird to my ears.
Sampletank ethno instruments. And of course Thumbjam tanpura ...
Thanks, everyone, for the good suggestions. I had completely forgotten about the tanpura in my beloved Thumbjam!

the droning variant (;
Aha, very nice! Will definitely use this...
I know this is an old thread but I'm having a lot of fun with Swarplug. The Tanpura IAP is $2.99 sounds really good. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/swarplug/id1137879159?mt=8 The drums are great too. i think it's iPad only.
iTabla has the best tanpura. There are two tanpuras and you can tune the two main strings on each of them. I think they might sell a standalone version too without the tablas.
This (although SwarPlug is a helluva lot of fun)
I just redownloaded it last night. It is fun and does sound good. I really like the surbahar.
I should probably spend a little cash on SwarPlug. It's been a "Go to" for me for a couple years. Also sounds sweet with Rozeta tossed at it. Might have a look-see at it's IAPs and support this one a bit more than I have already.
You were the inspiration! You mentioned it in another thread, and I remembered how much fun it could be.
Didn’t realize you could sample the IAPs in SwarPlug first. Just checked out the Sitar for $2.99. I’m not a Sitar aficionado, but these samples sound pretty good to me. Anyone already bought and can confirm?
I have the Sitar, and to my ears, it sounds fine. The Surbahar that I mentioned is somewhat like a "bass sitar"
I only have what came with the initial purchase. Which IAPs that you have that you recommend most?
The Sitar and Surbahar are the only 2 that I have. For some reason, I neglected the app shortly after downloading and buying those IAPs. I'm hoping someone else will weigh in with recommendations about some of the others.
The Sitar is sounding good to me. There’s something in GeoShred as someone mentioned, but I think you really need to be more familiar with Sitar to get the most of it. I know someone who plays Sitar and met people while in India studying it. For some, it’s a lifelong study of a very complex instrument. I think I’d rather buy a good $3 Sitar IAP lol
Going to check out the surbahar too. Thx for the recommendation!
I'm with you on the $3 dollar approach.
For what it's worth, there are six different sitar samples in Sound Canvas. The GeoShred "sitar" preset is just an effected physical-modelled acoustic guitar.
Oh man I love SwarPlug. So much fun.
I am having a brain fart or something but where the heck is the Tanpura in Thumbjam? I don't see it
IIRC, it is one of the samples available for download
Incorrect. It is a physically modeled string, resonator, and bridge. You can program it to sound like any kind of string instrument. I personally find the sitar patch unsatisfying, but let's at least describe the program accurately.
I looked there and didn't see it. Ok I'll check again thanks.
Yes, physically modeled. And no matter what I do it sounds a bit thin...
I love this app, but truth be told I'm not crazy about the presets. That said, it only takes one great patch to make a synth worthwhile. I've found mine.
The presets are not my cup of tea. But I've crafted a couple of my own that I've used on recorded tracks. They sound really nice in a mix. Have just not been able to dial in a good sitar from GS.
Yes, sorry, that was sloppy. I'd actually completely forgotten the bridge parameter was there specifically for this. It would probably be possible to get a better sitar out of it if you knew the instrument better; I gave up real sitar after a week because all the shredding was happening to my fingertips.
Go to "Download Samples" and it can be found near the bottom of the list between Synthie Kit and Melodica.
