finally!, my K-Mix arrived! with pictures! woah!

...after oneandahalf years of frustrating waiting yesterday my Kmixbaby finally arrived, surprisingly solid and "weighted"(don't know how else to describe). I'm in love. Using it mainly with the Macbook Pro i did play around a little with an Ipad-centric setup and had difficulties getting the usb-iPad-sound to be audible through the outputs. Anybody here can point me to a clue? I don't find the cuepoint where/how to grab the usb audio...
Where are the Kmixpeople in this Forum please...?

  • Nice! We need some photos or something so we can celebrate with you...

  • I'm very interests in one of these, would love to know your thoughts as you learn it. Thanks!

  • @lukesleepwalker: very nice of you, to put some wood under my gearlust-fire. I'll post something soon (not home today). @Tarekith: I'll let you know. Might even post some videos, when diving deeper... (was waiting myself hopelessly for some postings...)

  • @lukesleepwalker: pictures, man. now go enjoy!

    !

  • That is just stunning! Congrats.

  • These work with iOS? checks bank balance

  • Very pretty, pretty pricey too :(

    Yes, and bus powered too.

    Uh oh. No es bueno.

I've been interested in one as a potential iPad audio interface. Let us know if you get this issue sorted.

Also let us know how fast/slow KMI responds to your question. Also post whether you contact them by email or phone.

  • @GovernorSilver: I just contacted support via email to let them know. There's still a possibility I am stupid and don't realise how it's meant to work, but this far I am clueless as to what else to try... . It does work reliably with the Mac, and I'm very happy with it's build and features, makes my travelbaggage much smaller. Let's hope for the best, I'll keep you in the loop.

  • I've found email to be unreliable around the time of big gear shows because companies are packing up and/or flying over to the show. I think Berlin Synth Booth or Frankfurt Musikmesse is this coming weekend.

But yeah looking forward to updates!

  • @GovernorSilver: ok. I have an answer:

We are currently in the process of testing a new firmware update that will include iOS compatibility. We won't publicly release until we’re satisfied that it’s been throughly tested. Rest assured that we are working hard on getting iOS compatibility implemented.

So hopefully this will be resolved soonish... . Cheers,t

  • Please update us as you get more use to it. I am soooo very close to pulling the trigger on one, but haven't found many reviews so far. I'm mostly interested on using it to interface my eurorack to ableton, (I use studiomux to interface the ipad to ableton) but I would be thankful for any type of thoughts on usage by an actual owner!

  • Been running this idea through my head.

I picked up a used R16 from GC for $199 because I'm hopeful it'll gel in my iPad setup even though there are definite reports of the R Series not working with iOS. My reason being is that my main interfaces are two iConnectAudio4+s aggregated with my Mac and Live 9. One iCA4+ connects directly to my iPad and the other to my desktop which routes the four additional outputs through Live and the iConnectivity's software patchbay. In return, it routes to my iPad giving me an additional 4 ins.

To make it short, I figure I can aggregate the R16 to my desktop as well and route it back to my iPad. If this works I don't see why the K-mix wouldn't act the same.

Insight anyone? I'll shoot this to the iConnectivity forum too.

  • So I bought a k-mix at the end of March and I have been using it without issue on OS X. I just got around to getting a camera connection kit. In GarageBand and MasterRecord it works fine as a 2-in 2-out interface, but I don't see how to get all 8 input channels. Is this a limitation of GarageBand? I don't have Auria or Cubasis but I'm considering purchasing Auria for testing.

  • Still waiting on an update of firmware. Before that, it isn't really ios-compatible (meaning you can't get to those 8 channels in/out on ios).

  • Should you find the touch sliders and knobs don't work for you there's always an alternative. Simple bread and butter controller but super solid and easy to program. I bought one a week ago and I'm happy with it. A lot of knobage for such a small unit. Also both rows of buttons at the bottom can be assigned to either note or cc messages.

No lights though and needs to be hooked up via an unpowered hub or you get the 'too much power' pop up. Other than that super duper.

Gotta say the light works on k mix/cuneo are impressive albeit slightly on a candy shop side. How are you getting on with editing mappings? I found cuneo very complicated to map due to too many features (pressure etc).

  • Ah sorry dude, I didn't realise this was also an interface. Respect!

  • @supadom: mapping is much easier than on the quneo, since there's less functions for single buttons/faders etc. I like it, just hoping for ios compatibility soon...

  • With an iPad Por 12.9 I feel as if I don't really need another control surface, save for those pesky velocity values on keyboard and drums. Yeah the Kmix is pricey but their selling point about it fitting in a backback w NO MOVING OARTS OR KNOBS?!? That's freaking genius, mate! The 12.9 iPad Pro is match for back pack carry around. I might have to spring for this once they get the iOS thing worked out..

Too many knobs on that midi mix for me

  • New firmware just dropped btw. Don't know what is in it yet...

  • Prob iOS compat!

  • I hope so. Only reason I haven't picked this up yet is in waiting to see how it works in AUM.

  • Please keep us posted!

  • Excellent review

  • Ok gentlemen, newest firmware is installed, and I get all 8 inputs selectable inside AUM. Thus, I can record easily through the ins. All 10 outputs are also selectable (inside AUM/Egoist etc.), but I get no sound. It seams, we're not quite there yet, sadly so.
Anybody else more successful than me?

  • And: thanks for the review, good wrap-up. A nice thing they included now, is the channel-pairing, so you can have stereogroups... .

  • Thanks for confirming @animal the ins!

Didn't see anything about Mackie HUI control in the manual. I plan to use this with Auria Pro as a control surface too.

Please fill us in if anyone gets a chance to test this.

Side note: I've got a Zoom R16 working as an iOS interface if anyone is curious.

It works! I am only using GarageBand and initially I could see all 8 ins but monitoring the stereo out from the iPad (the main 1&2 output back through the k-mix headphone port) wasn't working. After going out and back into the app though I was able to monitor all channels and get the GarageBand metronome and hear all 4 of my input tracks. So bottoms line is it is now doing what I would like it to do and it's probably time to invest in Auria.

The 4 inputs are coming from my eurorack btw...

I don't know if the aux outs are working, but the mains and the headphones are.

Now to bug KMI about getting the transport controls working...

This is flipping awesome. Now I can record in the evening and add fx and mix down while laying in bed!
